Rex just howled with laughter, holding up his hands in protest as she sprayed water all over him when she shook her hair.
"No! No ah! Hahaha Muse stop! Alice stop! Ahhh!" He yelled through his laughter. He grinned and hopped up, taking her damp ribbon from her and waving it in the air before taking off. Brotherly love... he thought with a laugh.

"No! No ah! Hahaha Muse stop! Alice stop! Ahhh!"
"You're not gettin' off that easy." She said with a laugh as she continued to drip water on him. "HEY!!" She yelled when he took her ribbon and started to chase after him. Running by the bench she quickly grabbed her hat on the way and laughed as she tried to catch up to him.

Rex hung the ribbon on one of the gazebo posts and climbed up onto the gazebo, plopping down, too tired to run any farther. He didn't care if Muse got him back, he couldn't run anymore. His shirt was not quite drenched but wet, Muse was still dripping wet. Rex looked up into her face and laughed, he could tell she was having as much fun as he even if she were pretending to be angry.

She pointed a finger at him like she was going to say something, that no young lady should probably ever say, but instead she just cracked a smile and started to laugh. Tossing her hat next to the post with her ribbon, she took off her vest, showing off her ratty brown suspenders, and laid it out to let it dry and plopped down next to him still laughing. Taking in a deep breath she laid back. "I'll get ya back one day," She said between breaths. "Just wait."

"I'll get ya back one day, Just wait.
Rex smiled and nodded, "Yeah, I'm sure you will." He laughed, amazed at how much fun he could have with Muse. He only had known her for a little while but he felt like he had known her for years, as if she really could be his little sister. She knew how to have a good time, and wasn't all no nonsense. But she was gentle and cared at the same time.
Rex stared at her ratty suspenders for a moment, a thoughtful look on his face. He would have to change that, he thought. He had some spare cash saved underneath his bed in a loose floorboard. He wasn't going to Make Muse new, no, that wouldn't be good for business. But she deserved one good thing, a good pair of suspenders, unlike her old faded, ratty brown ones.

"Yeah, I'm sure you will."
"Oh I will." Laughing she pushed the hair out of her face and play glared at him. Smiling she closed her eyes relaxing. Muse loved being with Rex, she liked how he was always laughing and smiling. They really could be siblings, they did look like each other a little and they had the same fun loving personality. She also liked how he got into his new brotherly role so quickly. She loved Rex like he was her real brother, she loved how she could be herself around him.
Looking over at him she saw the thoughtful look on his features. Turning her head to the side she blink, "What are ya thinkin'?"

"What are ya thinkin'?"
Rex snapped out of his thoughtful daze to see Muse's wide blue eyes blinking innocently at him. He smiled slightly and put an arm around her shoulder, stroking one of her brown locks gently. He wasn't going to tell her his thoughts exactly, he wanted it to be a surprise, a nice surprise.
"Mmmm, just how proud I am to have a little sister." He beamed at her, his blue eyes twinkling with happiness.

Smirking she hugged him getting him wet with lake water. Laughing she laid back again and put her head on his shoulder relaxing.
"Mmmm, just how proud I am to have a little sister."
"I'm proud ta have you as my brother." She said smiling. Blinking a few times she sat up again. "You won't leave will ya?" She asked looking over at him with uncertainty.

He couldn't have felt better or more happy. He smiled as she laid her head on his shoulder, and rested his chin on her hair, his arms wrapped around her in a hug. Holding her close.
"I'm proud ta have you as my brother.
She pulled away gently and sat up, looking like she was blinking back tears. The next question tore at Rex's heart.
"You won't leave will ya?"
"Never. I promise you I'll never leave you and I aim to keep that promise, "Rex told her sincerely, looking into her blue eyes with his own.

"Never. I promise you I'll never leave you and I aim to keep that promise, "
Muse looked him in the eyes trying to see if he was lying. She wanted to believe that he was telling the truth. Seeing nothing but sincerity in his blue eyes, she nodded with a smile. Laying back down she laid her head on his shoulder again and hugging him. "Thank you." Was all she could find herself saying.

. "Thank you.
Rex shook his head, an adoring grin on his face. "Don't need ta thank me."
She laid her head on his shoulder and he resumed his position, resting his chin on her soft brown hair and watching the sunlight sparkle on the sun. This was truly a wonderful New York City moment.

"Don't need ta thank me."
She only nodded. She did have something to be thankful to him for, he's her brother now and he promised he wouldn't leave. She was extremely thankful. Closing her eyes she let the sun and the nice breeze dry her, slowly she found herself drifting to sleep, her breathing calm and even.

Rex smiled and asked, "Some day huh Muse?" When she didn't respond, and he looked down to see her gentle breathing and eyes closed, he grinned. She fell asleep. Sighing with a shake of a head, he smirked and whispered, "What am I gonna do with you, girl?"
He picked her up gently, and started his walk to the Brooklyn Lodging House, her head still resting on his shoulder. He walked through the door, hoping they wouldn't be too angry or protective to see some strange boy carrying one of their Brooklyn newsies. Most didn't care and just lazed about, giving them a steady indifferent gaze. Rex asked which bed was hers and laid her down on it, pulling off her shoes and putting her now dry jacket he had brought along on the post of her bed. He tucked her in and stroked back a stray curl from her face, smiling softly. He laid a kiss on her forehead and whispered, "Love you Muse." He finally tore his eyes away from his beautiful "Sister" and started for the livery, happier than he ever felt ever.

Post by Jerry Flynn on Aug 20, 2009 23:21:26 GMT -5
((New Day!))
Jerry Flynn stared at the half-page he'd written in his writing journal, and scowled. A half-page of overly precious, flowery prose was horseshit, not worth the ink it took to scrawl them on the page. Frustrated at his failed attempt to begin a new story, he tore the page from his journal, crumpled it and tossed it to the ground beside the bench. A hopeful duck waddled over quickly to inspect it. Finding it wasn't edible, the duck gave a disgruntled quack and wandered off again, looking very annoyed.
Maybe a story about ducks. In the Danish fable tradition.
Yeah, that might work! Jerry dipped his pen in the inkwell again and started a fresh page. A story about a colony of ducks--wait, was colony the right word? No, birds were a flock, right? Were waterfowl included? A flock of ducks. That didn't sound right. No, wait, geese came in gaggles, ducks must have their own word. He'd have to look into that when he got to the library. He circled the word "colony" as a reminder to himself, and carried on with his plot development.
A colony of ducks. One duck in particular who didn't fit in. Who... who looked different. Whose quack wasn't right. But it made him special somehow. He wasn't actually a duck! Yeah, he wasn't a duck at all, he only thought he'd been a duck. But he was really--
Oh. Shit. That was The Ugly Duckling. Plagiarizing Hans Christian Andersen probably wouldn't go over very well with publishers. Shit.
He ripped out that page and tossed it alongside the other.
"Argh!" he groaned to himself. "Where has my muse gone?!"
(In case anyone is curious, a group of ducks is called by different names, depending on what they're doing. If they're flying, they're a "team of ducks." If they're on the water, they're a "paddle of ducks." If you're non-specific to their action, they're a "raft of ducks." Random trivia for the day.)

Post by murdoch on Aug 21, 2009 0:41:27 GMT -5
Murdoch was bored. utterly bored and it just wasn't right. He should have been elated. He had just gotten out of school with no homework and no detention for once in almost forever. It was a bright and sunny day and he had hours to roam around in the park before he had to go home for dinner and he had managed to avoid his bossy big brother, Bascom, so he didn't even have to check in with anybody at all. The only problem, he guessed, was that he was all alone. All of the other kids' moms and dads had been making them go straight home from school for the past few weeks because of the kidnappings which had happened awhile back. Luckily, his parents understood that, since it had been all newsies that had been taken and none of their kids were newsies, it would be stupid to sequester them like that. That was what his dad had said, and even though he wasn't exactly sure what sequester meant he knew that he and his other (much nicer) big brother, Hyrum had still been allowed to roam free after school and before dark. They'd kind of missed their friends when they were playing and they couldn't even start to get a decent game of stickball started anymore, they'd had lots of fun going on adventures together and stuff. But, today, Hyrum had dipped Mary Lewis's pigtail in an inkwell and put a worm down her shirt so he had to write lines after school and he had gotten the paddle so he probably wouldn't feel too much like playing even after he finished.
He let out a sigh of frustration as a duck waddled passed him looking equally displeased if that was even possible for a duck to do. He was contemplating following the duck or something like that just to see what it would do but just as he started to change directions, he heard some guy talking to himself at a bench just a couple feet away.
"Argh! Where has my muse gone?!"
The guy seemed pretty angry at himself and people talking to themselves were always a lot more interesting that frustrated ducks so Murdoch strolled over in that direction instead. "What's a muse?" he asked the guy in an upbeat, genuinely inquisitive tone "Is it kinda like a mouse? It's spelled almost the same, right? It was one of my brother's spellin' words a while back an' he wouldn't tell me what it meant but it was spelled almost like mouse 'cept without the U after the O... Wait" he paused briefly, his expression shifting to one of mild confusion. " If it's like a mouse, how come you're mad it went away? Was it your pet or somethin'? If it was I bet it'll come back. Martin Kinsey, this kid in my class, he lost his dog for almost three days an' then it jus' showed up on 'is doorstep in the morning' wantin' food" He finished with a bright, encouraging smile. Boy, he sure wished he had a pet mouse. That would be real neat he wouldn't be bored then.
