She smirked, "You and half the city.." She blew her hair out of her eyes--- Jack Kelly was the only person in all of New York next to Dodger who could ever get away with doing that to her hair. She really did like Jack, otherwise she wouldn't be here. "I'm trying to stay outta trouble, Sneaks wasn't around much so I kinda--" It was like setting a child loose at an amusement park. "Man, JackJack I really need to grow up.."

((New Day))
When Magnet finally caught up with Smiley, they ran back all the way to the Manhattan Lodging House and sat down on the roof. They just got their, and they were both trying to catch their breath.
As he finally got his breath, he said, "So, dat was fun." Smiling at her, he laughed.

The air was thick and wet, the sky a dull, lifeless grey, and Mabel had chosen now of all times to explore the lodging house she'd now spent more time in than she had ever intended to. Arms tight across her chest, Mabel worried her lip with her teeth and surveyed the less than awe-inspiring view.
The air was cool and the humidity that had left Mabel's hair a mess of tangled, frayed waves had finally been relieved by the day's rain. All the same, this weather always left Mabel moody and discontent--though, in all fairness, Mabel spent the majority of her days moody and discontent.
Hiking up her skirt, she eyed her broken leather shoes sourly. Lately, her feet had been ravaged by blisters and general soreness, but it was not like she had the money to spend on a new pair. In fact, Mabel found herself more broke than ever before. Somewhere along the way, she had gone from bad to worse.
In bending over to adjust her sock, the book she had tucked under her arm slipped and fell into one of the numerous puddles. Following a string of un-Mabel like obscenities, Mabel retrieved the book, it's pages now soaked and grimy.
"Wonderful."

Bumlets had been reading and writing under an overhang near the door, he had been meaning to talk to Mabel but being how he was he didn't really get the chance to strike up a conversation with anyone. One of the few women he actually liked had dropped her book into a puddle and looked worse for wear than usual. He sighed and set his book under a crate that he had been using to keep things dry and walked over to where she picked up the soggy book.
"We can dry out the pages," he offered quietly, taking the book from her and giving it a look for a moment as he flipped threw it. "Just take a bit of time." Sadly he would do just about anything for Mabel. She'd gotten him to realize his own potential, given him enough courage to send something to the papers. He nodded towards the over hang where he had been sitting and his eyes cast over her frame. She did look worse for wear, but that could be fixed.
"You look exhausted.."

"We can dry out the pages," he offered quietly, taking the book from her and giving it a look for a moment as he flipped threw it.
Mabel really had not anticipated seeing anyone else on the roof, particularly considering the weather, but Bumlets was a pleasant surprise. Wiping away grime from the water-logged book, Mabel sighed sadly, "Still, some of the inks gone all runny... luckily, I've already read this one, oh, three times now." A tight budget kept Mabel from pleasure purchases. No new clothes, no new ribbons for her hair and no new books.
"You look exhausted.."
Mabel smiled wryly at Bumlets' honesty. "Admittedly, my hair has looked better, but really, the humidity's to blame." She knew Bumlets' observation had nothing to do with her hair, but Mabel, for once, did not feel like admitting just how awful she felt these days. This was quite a change for Mabel who typically took every opportunity to rant about, well, anything.
"You seem to have held up well despite the humidity--not afrizzy hair in sight." She quipped, resting her hands on her hips. "I'm a little jealous." But Bumlets did look well--much better than some of the kids she had seen lately. Bouts of sickness during the winter had kept Mabel thin and pale. Luckily, summer was on its way in and flu season on its way out.
"So, you had better tell me you've been writing." Mabel remarked with faux-sterness, cocking an eyebrow and pursing her lips like a stern teacher. "

He reached up and ran his hand over her hair just for a moment before he pulled back, "I'm complicated, heh. No it doesn't bother me at all.."
"So, you had better tell me you've been writing."
"I did," he said with a nod, he'd wanted to tell her about it. Needed to tell her about it, almost as if he wanted her approval. A small smile worked over his face as he took her book back to where he'd been sitting and sat to down. Looking back at her, "I wrote an article about the TB outbreak..." mentioned friends and people he'd known that had not lived threw it, and what they had needed.

Bumlets' intimate gesture caught Mabel off guard. Repeating his motion over her hair like a nervous twitch, Mabel gathered her hair to one side, braiding it to busy her fingers. It was not as though Mabel did not appreciate the affection, she just did not know what to make of it. Mabel was not a cold person, per say, but she certainly was not one to express affection so openly.
And, given her current circumstances, Mabel could barely begin to comprehend anything more than friendship for the time being. Furthermore, Mabel was used to calculated courtship: her betrothal to a young man early in her teenage years drastically altered how she saw romance.
"I wrote an article about the TB outbreak..."
Mabel smiled widely, "That's wonderful!" Realizing she had just beamed about an epidemic that killed many, including friends of Bumlets, Mabel frantically back peddaled. "What I mean to say is--TB is not wonderful--I mean, obviously. Not that I'd know--I've just heard... and, well, of course--rather..." Squeezing her eyes shut in a wince, Mabel took a second to collect herself.
"I'm glad you're writing." She finally mustered, "It's... keep with it. You've got a future in it, I'm certain of that. And I don't say that lightly either," Mabel moved to sit beside him, "Because, believe you me, there are plenty of boys here who... I just don't know that they'll ever rise above this." The statement was perhaps too harsh, but entirely like Mabel.
"You're better than this." She clarified with a firm nod.

To be fair Bumlets rarely saw much out of relationships. His father had died when he was young and his sister had married a lout. So the entire situation just made him terribly awkward as it was. He shrugged his shoulders at her gesture. He tended to be very detached for a variety of reasons and soft spoken so when he did things it was generally out of the blue. Especially if they were kind.
He was shocked at her final declaration. He was better than this? To be fair it was all he'd ever really known. With a slight smile and a blush he lifted a brow, shaking his head. She was right, some of his friends would live and die by the street life. Join up in gangs and be killed on the street, or have a dangerous accident on the docks while they broke their backs.
"Mabel.." he had to stop as he tried to figure out what to say. "Some kids, they come here to get away from life, or because they've got nothing better. Some have it all but want freedom and are ready to pay the price.." He'd come here for his family. It was easier on his mum if she didn't have another mouth to feed.
"Why did you?" she wanted him to write more and at this very second. Brian Russo wanted to know more about the prim miss Mabel Fitzpatrick. This wasn't her world, any fool could see that. She was bred to be one of the fine ladies on fifth avenue.
And far from him, and this lodging house.
