ASH'S NEWSIES
Ashleigh “Pallet” O‘Shea
Friendly | Sweet | Caring | Protective | Newsie/Painter | Bronx

Born and raised in Galway Ireland, Pallet grew up rich and privileged--art lessons, horseback riding, lavish meals on the tables everyday, etc.--with her younger brother Shamrock. After her mother died giving birth to her baby brother Liam (who also died), she became caretaker for her brother Shamrock and her father at a very young age. For fear of loosing the farm, her father hired on a man--who brought a son with him--to help. The man’s son became a huge help and best friend to young Pallet, and together they took care of the both families until both fathers were murdered. Not having anyone let to care for the three kids, they boarded a ship and found themselves in New York City. Thus the beginning of their story of going from Riches to Rags.
For several months, they lived on the streets in alleys and abandoned buildings, with the boys working as Newsies and Pallet as a laundress--trying to save up their money. After her boss’ son’s attempt to sexually assault her, she quit that job and joined the boys on the streets selling papers and her paintings, and became wary of men she didn’t know for a few years. Soon after, they found permanent lodging in the Bronx and their small make-shift family became a large one, and they helped her overcome her wariness of men.
To her many friends, Pallet is sweet, friendly, loyal and protective. Most of the time, she one of the first people to welcome a new girl into the house. Because of her past--taking care of her family--she tends to be protective and caring of the younger kids in the house, always making sure they have enough food to eat and a shoulder to cry on.
As for her love life, it‘s difficult to put into words her current relationship. Before joining the Bronx Newsies, she was in a relationship with her best friend Lord Byron but they soon realized they made better friends then lovers so that ended. As of right now, there is no boyfriend in her life but she is developing some major feelings for a certain Queens newsie who is not quite ready for an actual girlfriend yet, but who likes her in return. For now things between them are… let’s just say, beneficial for both…

Aodhan “Shamrock“ O‘Shea
Rambuncious| Troublemaker | Unbelievably Lucky | Speaks his Mind | Loyal | Bronx Newsie

Growing up in Galway, Ireland was easy for Shamrock. His family was wealthy and privileged so he never had want for anything. He was raised to take over the farm and all their tenants when he was grown. His mother died when he was just 6, leaving his sister Pallet--who was just 10--to raise him and take care of him. Seeing as he was so young when he lived in Ireland, there is little that he can remember about his family and their home, but his sister reminds him where he came from as often as she can. The murder of his father was so traumatic for him that he blocked it out so he doesn’t remember the exact reason why he, his sister, and their friend Lord Byron moved to America other than that they had no family left when their parents died.
Living on the streets of New York City had been an adventure for him because Pallet and Lord Byron sheltered him from the realities of their situation as long as they could. They wanted him to be able to be a kid for as long as he could. He and Lord Byron--who was like a big brother to him--sold papers on the street to earn money to feed the three of them, and his sister soon joined them. After many months of being squatters, the makeshift family found permanent lodging in the Bronx, and Shamrock finally had the friends he longed for.
To all who knew him and were friends with him, Shamrock is loyal, full of energy, gets in to lots of trouble with his friends, and isn‘t afraid to speak his mind--which often causes problems. But, because of his unusually lucky ways, he always seems to come out unscathed.
When it comes to girls, he has just recently begun noticing them in the same way as the older boys. There is no special girl in his life but his friends have been watching a certain something brewing between Shamrock and fellow Bronx newsie, Jenny Kincaid. But, he is still young so we’ll see what happens.

Jackson “Lord Byron“ Hastings
Quiet| English Gentleman | Friendly | Protective | Poet | Bronx Newsie

Lord Byron grew up in Sussex, England as an only child to two loving parents. Although they were just an upper-middle class family, he learned the life of an English gentleman—his parents had great hopes for their only son. He was raised to be a hard worker and a loving and caring man. His mother read him poetry and his father taught him to train horses. After his mother died, he and his father moved to Ireland where his father was hired as overseer of the O’Shea ranch. The O’Shea’s were also mourning the loss of their wife and mother, so the two fathers bonded and became good friends; as did Byron and the eldest O’Shea kid, Ashleigh—who is later known as Pallet. The two friends took care of both families together until their fathers were murdered, leaving them alone and with no family. With no other options, they boarded a ship and found themselves wandering the streets of New York City.
He lived on the streets for several months with Pallet and her younger brother Shamrock, working as a newsie. He took care of the three of them, always providing them food and finding someplace safe for them to sleep. After Pallet quit her job as a laundress and joined the two boys as a newsie, he was able to find them permanent lodging in the Bronx. No longer being the only one to look out for the two people who were the closest thing he had to family, he slowly began to experience life as a teenage boy.
Byron’s friends know him to be a quiet but friendly guy. He’s often thought of to be introverted and keep to himself and his writing, but lately he’s been branching out and becoming more and more social. Although he is a gentlemanly, quiet guy, he will protect the ones he cares about—to the death if need be. So be sure to avoid hurting his friends.
Because of the way he carries himself and he stays true to his ‘English Gentleman’ ways, you’d think he would have had plenty of girls to choose from that would fall in line to be his love interest but it isn’t so. The only romantic relationship he’s had was before joining the newsies, with his best friend Pallet. After they joined their new family, they soon realized they were better off friends and ended it there. Currently, there is no one special in his life but now that he’s becoming more social who knows how long until there is…

Parris “Half Pint” Dantès
High-spirited | Curious | Mouthy | Manipulator | Troublemaker | Queens Newsie/Pickpocket

As a baby, Half Pint was left on the doorstep of a convent in Paris, France, with a note pinned to his blanket that said his birthday of July 27th, 1891, and that his parents didn’t have the means to care for him, and was signed Mr. & Mrs. Dantès. The nuns took him to the local orphanage, but there was no room for him because they already had more kids then they could handle. So, they decided to raise him in the covenant until they could find a family that could take him. Because he had no name, they named him after the city they lived in, gave him a middle name after the Patron saint of Children (St. Nicholas of Myra), and gave him his parent’s last name.
He was always getting into trouble--pick pocketing and stealing--and was more than a handful for the nuns; which made it hard for them to find him a family. When he was 6 years old, a couple of nuns who were traveling to America, decided to take him along to see if they could find him a home there. Amidst all the chaos of Locust Point, when they arrived in Baltimore, he slipped free of them and ran off. He stowed away on a train and found himself in NYC…
He lived on the streets for several months sleeping in abandoned houses, building, and alleys and pick pocketing to survive, until one day he pick the wrong pocket; a newsie. To teach him a lesson, the newsie had him sell what papers were left, then got him off the streets and working as a newsie. Every now and then, you will still catch him pick pocketing when he’s bored. But, more often than not, you’ll see him trailing around after his best friend’s Snoddy or Styx.
Half Pint has a tendency to get in a lot of trouble but one look into his “puppy dog” eyes and your heart melts, and you can’t stay mad at him for long. He’s an energetic and high-spirited 8 year old who tends to be a little mouthy. He tries to take advantage of his ‘cuteness’ which means he’s a good manipulator. He looks up to all the Newsie leaders, and his best friend/‘big brothers’ Snoddy and Styx, and he works hard trying to be just like them.
Seeing as he only eight, Half Pint isn’t really at a stage in his life to be interested in girls. If you ask him what he thinks about girls, he’ll tell you they’re stupid and not as great as boys, and that it’s gross when the bigger guys starting making goo-goo eyes at them or kissing them. The only thing girls are good for is scaring them with spiders and frogs and snakes. Give him a couple more years and he might feel differently…

Aurelia “Luna” Young
Happy | Laidback | Independent | Night owl | Flirt | Jamaican Spitfire | Queens Newsie

Luna was born in Spanish Town, Jamiaca. Her mother was the illegitimate daughter of a white plantation owner and his colored maid and her father was a merchant ship’s first mate. They had 3 children together-Luna and her twin brother, Harrison and their younger sister, Jamia.
Although they were colored, the Youngs lived pretty well. Aurelia and Harrison were taught to read, write, and speak French and English from their grandfather Hugh, like the white children and lived in a small house on his plantation with their parents. When he would go on short trips out to sea, their father George would take both of them with him to work on the ship when they were old enough. Aurelia loved it especially because it gave her a brief chance to get away. She longed to get away from the prejudice glances and treatment her family got.
One day while working on her father's ship, Aurelia heard some of the men talking about a trip they had made to NYC which caught her interest. So, that night she packed up some clothes and some of her belongings, left her family a note telling them she loved them, sneaked out of the house, and stowed away on one of the merchant ships bound for NYC.
Luna’s friends know her as being a happy girl and quite content with her life--loving her job as a newsie. She is always making it her mission to try to put a smile on everyone’s faces. She's a flirt and she's quite independent but likes to put on the 'damsel in distress' bit every once in a while when around a good-looking guy. Also, don’t let her innocent and naïve looks fool you. She can be quite the Jamaican spitfire when someone is treating her or someone she cares for badly, and she will stick up for what she believes is right. Although she is quite a strong and independent girl, she has her moments of weakness and self-consciousness when she catches someone judging her by the color of her skin.
At the moment, there are no men in Luna’s life. She is content with just flirting and having the occasional one-night-stand until the time comes when she meets one special enough to be with exclusively....

Noah “Chimera” Hudson
Cocky | Short-Tempered | Quick-Thinking | Trustworthy | Loyal | Holds Grudges | Suspicious of Strangers | Brooklyn Newsie|

Chimera’s parents were extremely superstitious so when he was born with two different colored eyes they had him sent away to be killed. His mother‘s midwife took pity on him and saved his life by taking him to an orphanage instead. He spent the first ten years of his life in an Australian orphanage in Brisbane. He was an unhappy child and always started fights. He was often referred to as ‘The Little Beast’ and was often left to his own vices because most people who worked in the orphanage feared he was a bad omen. A month before his eleventh birthday, he had enough and ran away. He lived on the streets in Brisbane for two years on his own; pick pocketing, stealing, and terrorizing the locals. One day to escape from local police, he stowed away aboard a ship headed for New York City, America.
Soon after arriving in New York City, Chimera was caught stealing and sent to live at the refuge. He kept to himself, would reject anyone who tried to befriend him, and would spend his time sulking and listening into other kids conversations. After several months, with some sceming and quick-thinking he managed to escape and made his way for Brooklyn to become a newsie--he heard talk about each of the boroughs from several newsies in the refuge and Brooklyn sounded like the best place for someone like him. He quickly fit right in with the other Brooklyn newsies and has been working as one himself ever since.
To people who don’t know him, Chimera seems to be cold, broody, and distant. But, to his friends he is known to be charming, loyal, and someone you can trust. He is cocky and short-tempered, and is more likely to hold a grudge then to forgive. He is quick-thinking and someone you definitely want protecting your back. Be sure to avoid getting on his bad side or messing with anyone he deems a friend, because he won’t think twice about letting you get familiar with his fists. Although he is very trusting of his friends, he won’t easily trust a stranger. He’s suspicious of anyone he doesn’t know until they prove themselves worthy of being trusted.
As for a love life, Chimera would prefer to keep things simple. He respects women--and a bit of a flirt--so he’s not the ‘bed-em and leave-em’ kind, but once talk of commitment starts he’ll let them down as quickly and easy as possible and disappear. Then, he’ll move on to the next woman that manages to catch his interest. Commitment--to a woman--is not a word in his vocabulary. At least, until he meets the right woman who can handle him…

Chloe “Pixie” Davenport
Boisterous| Spirited | Mouthy | Loyal | Prankster | Manhattan Newsie

Chloe was born in Paris, France. Her mother—French cancan dancer—Georgianna Moreau was not well-liked by the ladies of French society because she was known to have various affairs with all kinds of men—single, married, widowed, gentleman, rouge, rich or poor. Chloe and her older half-brother Olivier were the results of such affairs. Her father—English Viscount—Lord Everett Davenport, doted on his only child.
Although the identity of Chloe’s father was kept a secret, he still managed to lavish her with gifts and provide her with the best of everything. She spent her days learning different subjects from various tutors and playing and picnicking in the park with her half-brother Olivier. After eleven years of living a care-free and easy life, she never expected anything to change. But it did.
A few months after her eleventh birthday, Chloe’s father became engaged to marry the daughter of an English barrister. Not wanting the marriage tainted with the scandal of an illegitimate daughter—if she was ever discovered—he paid for passage aboard a ship bound for America for Chloe, her mother, and her brother. On the journey across the ocean, her mother became terribly ill and died two days before arriving at Ellis Island, leaving her older brother (who was 17 at the time) to care and provide for her. He got a job working at the train yards so they could live at a local boarding house. A year later she decided it was time to branch off on her own, so she moved out of the place she lived with her brother and became a newsie.
Everyone who knows Chloe, know her to be a boisterous, energetic, spirited young girl, and a loyal friend and great listener. Her friends know they can tell her anything because she is great at keeping secrets. She is quite small for her age--appearing to be quite younger than she really is--but will not let herself fade into the background or shy away from a problem or challenge because someone thinks she’s too small. What she lacks in height, she makes up for in intelligence and ambition. She has a tendency to get into quite a bit of mischief. She can be quite mouthy and rarely thinks before she speaks, which often leads to half the trouble she finds herself in. The other half is from her tendency to play harmless pranks which--along with being short--earned her the nickname Pixie.
