His mother dumped him on his father soon after he was born, but as his father was already married with grown kids, he wanted nothing to do with the boy. Luckily for little Nicholas, his father’s brother was unmarried and secretly well off, so it was he that took him in. Aidan, his uncle, was already almost forty when he adopted Nick and, though he had no children of his own, needed an apprentice to carry on his work once her had passed. A talented conman himself, Aidan had retired only a few years before obtaining Nick. The rest of his family, including his brother, didn’t know what his previous profession had been and Aidan felt no need to clue them in. When Nicholas was five, his uncle decided it was time to get out of the Old Country and moved the pair of them to New York. It was around this time that Aidan began shaping young Nick’s natural abilities into what would make him the next great conman. By the time he was eight he was already pulling small cons and getting better every day. The summer before Nick’s seventeenth birthday, Aidan suffered a heart attack and died. When the lawyers showed up the following day they informed Nick that when he turned seventeen he would inherit his uncle’s sizable bank account and the town house they’d lived in. Heartbroken and still a little bit in shock at the passing of his mentor--and at the information that he was about to become very rich--he refused to go back to school. Instead, he spent most of his days in the library, pouring over books and learning all he could about everything until his birthday rolled around and the papers were signed. To Nicholas, the con had never been about making money, but about the thrill of pulling the wool over people’s eyes and staying on your toes. So, the newly acquired fortune did not stop him from continuing on his uncle’s legacy. He continued pulling cons, but eventually he began to get bored and lonely. So, when he was approached one day by a man named Tully, he was inclined to listen to the man’s proposition. Turns out he had seen him pull off a bank con the day before and was impressed; wanted him to join his crew as a conman, an informant, and a recruiter.
