Though it is the Egyptian symbol for eternal life, or the “key of life”, Ankh does not believe it will keep her alive forever nor that it will grant her an afterlife. Rather, she sees it as a lucky charm that carries the good wishes of her unknown ancestors. Age: 15 Place of Origin: Suez, Egypt Occupation: Newsie, River's Owl Public Knowledge: Egyptian | Bronx informant | Not a big talker, but often speaks through Achilles History Born in an Egyptian orphanage in the coastal city of Suez, Ankh was raised on the streets and came to New York at the age of ten, purely on accident. Her natural curiosity had her snooping around one of the many busy ports in the city, watching the ship that was bound for the ever-mysterious “America”. She climbed into an empty barrel to better hear what the sailors were saying, but the flat upon which her snoop-barrel was sitting was loaded onto the ship. For fear of getting in trouble -- this area of the port was off-limit to civilians and especially to children-- she lay quietly, waiting for the men to leave so she could escape. Unfortunately, the men didn’t leave and the large cargo ship “set sail” taking Ankh along with it. Unable to stay in her barrel forever, Ankh’s hunger eventually drove her to come out of hiding and face the consequences. The captain chastised her soundly, but upon seeing the honest shame in her eyes, forgave Ankh and during the long voyage he and the crew grew rather fond of her. They taught her many things, each having a different area of expertise, and she owes many things to them. It took Dodger a while to realize how Ankh's talents could be used, because she is so damn quiet, but eventually he asked her to be "his eyes." She agreed, but asked that she be allowed to make her own hours, for, unlike Brooklyn's Birds, she does her best work at night when her complexion and naturally dark hair help her meld into shadows. Ankh sleeps during most of the day, though she sometimes gets up in time to sell the evening edition, she watches and moves around the borough throughout the night and then sells the morning edition before going back to bed. Today she reports to River, just as loyally as she did to Dodger. About the Player Player Name: Dani Borough: The Bronx Characters Played: lots...
