The name’s Kate Adams, but everyone calls me Dazzle. I’m a newsie. Well, I am now, but wasn’t always.
My earliest memory is playing tag with a boy at my old orphanage. I’ve been an orphan since I can remember. My parents left me on the steps of an orphanage in Ralston, Virginia, that’s where I’m from. How did I get to New York? Wull, dat orphanage I was in was getting too full. They had to move some of us, and I was one. But, I didn’t want to be in an orphanage. At 15 I can take perfectly good care of myself, thank you very much. So, I got off the orphan train and made a break for it. Now, I’m in Queens, and heading for the lodging house.
I’m not exactly a material girl, but I do like to look my best, if I can. I’m most commonly seen wearing a dark blue dress, and a black jacket. I’ve bought myself a newsie hat too, ta blend in a little more. My hair is a dark shade of blonde, and my eyes are green.
I’m really good at bargaining with merchants. You know, getting somethin’ for less than it is. I learned it when other kids at the orphanage would take my stuff, and I’d make them give it back. People learn really quick that I won’t take no grief from anyone. I’m smart too, educated a little, but everyone who was at the orphanage had lessons. So I can do readin’ ‘riting and ‘rithmatic, just like lots of other kids. I’m generally happy, upbeat, and optimistic, because being sad is no fun for anyone. I’m not much for fighting… not that I won’t, but I just don’t like to hurt people, or see other people get hurt.
My accent? Well, I’ve just started picking it up. It’s not constant, but I promise I’m not doing it on purpose! I just recently started getting it when I came to New York. So, that’s why it comes and goes every so often.
I guess if you need anything else just come and find me. I’ll probably be in Queens while I’m getting used to the area, since I’m new. I’m always up for makin’ new friends, just come and introduce yourself. Bye!
