Lara Rippy finally ran away from her uncle Walter House. She had taken his abuse, and insults, and insensitivity for years and she was quite tired of it all. Her father left her there, hoping her late mother's brother would give her a better life than he, a struggling actor, could. Her uncle was as her father liked to say, "well off". Now her father was traveling with some theater company, promising to return when he struck it rich.
That was three years ago. Lara was 16 now, blue eyes, raven hair, but hadn't a penny to her name. Of course her uncle never let her have any money of her own. The last straw was the terrific black eye he had finally given her after empty threats for so long.
Her nickname was given to her by Avalanche, upon meeting her and showing her around the lodging house. Dutchy showed her how to be a newsies with his help.
A few months later, Dr House had found her and made tremendous apologies, promising to make an attempt at change. She accepted, on the terms that she could keep the money she made and allowed to still see her newsie friends. He agreed.
