The twins loved the stories from Greek Mythology growing up and wanted their own “Greek names.” Since Christopher had nearly died three times to date — it has since risen to six — she chose to name him after the river that separates the land of the living from the land of the dead. Age: 17 Place of Origin: Galway, Ireland; Amsterdam, Holland. Occupation: newsie, daredevil, leader Public Knowledge: Queens' leader | has a twin sister | is a chronic flirt | often does things that could kill him Queens only: Speaks Dutch | spends too much time at McGinty's not drinking | plays the fiddle History Full-blooded Irish on his father’s side and pure Dutch by his mother, Chris was born in Galway, Ireland a full twelve minutes before his sister Casey. His father, Dylan, was not a musician by trade, but his skill with a fiddle was well and widely known. It was apparent from a young age that Chris had inherited his father’s quick fingers and musical talent, so he was taught music almost before he could read. Talent though, unfortunately for his parents, does not equal dedication and their would-be music prodigy was thwarted by his own excessive amounts of energy. His non-stop energy made it damn-near impossible to get him to focus on studies, let alone music, so he was constantly in trouble with both his parents and his teachers. If there was even the slightest possibility that a thing could be jumped to, on, over, or off of, you can bet Chris tried. One of the few things besides food that could get him to really sit still was the stories his mother would read to the twins from her book on Greek Mythology. It was from this book that the twins selected each other’s nicknames. When Chris and Casey were ten, their parents picked-up and moved all of them to Amsterdam, Holland, so they could experience their mother’s hometown. Though he was already fluent in Dutch, thanks to his mother, Chris was not happy about leaving Ireland. He eventually grew to appreciate his mother’s homeland, but it could never be his. He was Irish, through and through. Three years later, his father decided they would adventure to a brand new “homeland”: America. Upon arrival, their mother was refused entrance because the examiners declared her “infected.” Instead of abandoning his wife or dragging all four of them back on the boat, their father returned to Amsterdam with her and charged the twins to lookout for each other until they could return. They haven’t heard from them since. Chris did odd jobs around the neighborhoods at first, sticking mainly to areas inhabited by either the Irish or Dutch as he was more likely to receive fair pay from people who shared his heritage. Occasionally he worked with Casey as a messenger, but he wasn’t as fond of running as she was so it wasn’t often. Not too long after their arrival, the pair accidentally found out they were good pickpockets. Their honest upbringing, however, only allowed them to steal occasionally and never from those who couldn’t afford for their pockets to be lightened. As the months passed and as staying out of the various orphanages and refuge-type institutions of New York grew more difficult, their honesty grew fainter and picking became their main source of income rather than their backup. When the two of them were fifteen, Casey convinced Chris to let them try being newsies. He was reluctant at first, but they’d been without a home for two years now and the idea of a lodging house had definite appeal. As fate would have it, they happened to be in Queens at the time, so it was to the Queen’s Lodging House they were directed and it was Prince, the then leader of Queens, who welcomed them in and taught them how to be newsies.
