She could have shook him sometimes, but this time she met his eyes. Watched how guarded he was and her brow lifted slightly at the look on his face as she tried to pick it apart in her mind. What was he thinking? Danny-- there was something he wasn't telling her and she was finally seeing through her own pain to see his tells. He was hiding something from her and she didn't know what it was. It had her hand moving to his neck, green eyes on his face as she listened to him promise her again he wasn't going to leave. The amusement wasn't reaching his eyes, it had her own gazing into his curiously.
"What.. aren't you telling me, Danny?" her voice was barely a whisper. What wasn't she telling him? About the life she'd tried to start, the normal easy one that was in a way eating her alive. How she was running out of steam and energy and she'd been far to strong far to long and was starting to break. Sure all of those things, but she was focusing on him now. Her eyes not wavering. "What are you hiding from me?"

For a moment he didn't even understand the look she was giving him, didn't understand he was giving himself away until she moved her hand to his neck and he caught his breath, face going completely blank. His best poker face, a little too late, and pretty much useless because he'd learned it from her in the first place. He'd been far too open when they'd first met, giving everything away and wearing his heart on his sleeve. Apparently some things would just never change. "It's not... It's nothing. Don't worry about it... okay?" But it wouldn't work. He knew it wouldn't work.
He'd been friends with her for too long to think she'd give up asking. Or rather, she would, eventually, but then she got demanding and that's an entirely different level of questioning that Danny just didn't survive unscathed most of the time. And he couldn't help it, his blue eyes clouded as he looked down into hers, his arm tightening minutely around her waist. "Bella." And he wanted to say his voice changed too, like it did in all the stories where important things were about to be said, but it sounded the same to his ears, if a little shaky. "I left... I had to leave... because I...I..."
But he didn't say it. Instead he bent his head and caught her mouth with his own, a kiss that was as gentle as it was loving, though it wasn't just a brush of lips against hers. It was far more than that, and it was something, remarkably, that they'd never done with each other. And the moment he did it he wondered if perhaps he shouldn't have. Not a regret, how could he regret kissing Lucky? But still.

It seemed to happen rather quickly, his arm tightening around he waist as he stumbled over his words. Something he'd never done before that she could remember. She was watching him, studying his face before his eyes met hers. For a moment she got lost in whatever she saw there, for a minute, she wasn't sure what she was seeing.
When his lips met hers, her eyes widened. She wasn't sure what to make of this. Her mind ran over and over, trying to figure it out what he meant. But she felt heat, drawing heat and fire and that wasn't something she expected. She didn't expect Danny to kiss her, nor did she expect her own react to it. Her hand moving to his jaw, his cheek and holding there. This was insane, she hesitated a moment before she pulled back and fixed him with a look.
A wide eyed, wild look. What the hell Danny? What was she supposed to do with that? Her eyes fixed on him, her lips slightly swollen from his kiss. She looked like she was trying to figure out whether to punch him, or kiss him again.

It hadn't happened often, if at all. Danny was usually far more eloquent than this. But he hadn't expected to be cornered and he would have been, if he'd have feigned ignorance for much longer. She would have backed him right up into a corner and demanded, and it was always hard to get out without telling her what she wanted to know. And he wouldn't lie. Couldn't. Not with this. And the kiss was his way of answering her, though he was sure it would confuse her more than anything. And it did. He could see the emotions in her eyes clear as anything. But God if she didn't look beautiful like that, wide eyed, wild, lips a little swollen. He wouldn't mind seeing it more often, and it made his heart skip a beat.
"Are you going to hit me?" He rasped out, softly, and the world could have exploded around them for all the attention he was paying it. His focus was on her, and her alone. "Or can I do that again?" He hadn't answered her question, not in words, but was it really so hard to see what he'd been hiding? It would take a little bit of explaining for her to understand what he'd been thinking, what he'd been feeling, why he'd left the way he had, but she knew him better than this. The answer was there, looking her in the face. She just had to look and see it, shining clear in those blue eyes. And he moved the one hand from her hair to her face, cupping her cheek, thumb brushing gently against her bottom lip. "Miranda."

She looked torn, but all she could think about at that moment was how this had happened and how she couldn't be doing it. She was twisted and she closed her eyes for a moment before she pressed her lips to his and pulled back shaking her head, out of his arms and a few steps back. It wasn't going to happen it couldn't, she felt like her world had shifted all over again. Danny loved her like that? It changed-- everything and she shook her head.
"I can't," she managed to grind out, before her voice got stronger. "I can't do that to River. I love him, he was here when you weren't he takes care of me and he loves me I can't hurt him like this.. not like this." Not like she'd been hurt, not to be left in the dust. "What do you want me to do, Dan? I'm with someone I can't... " She shook her head and put her hand to her forehead before she turned and walked out the door, she needed time to think, time alone. Her heart wasn't sure, she wasn't sure and all she could think about was River at that moment.
And her thoughts kept drifting from the kiss, to the man she was with. What was she going to do? How was she going to fix it-- she was going to go get a few drinks. She needed a few drinks, and she needed to talk to Collin. And bash his ever loving head in.

Danny had secrets, many of which she should have been able to see, but he'd been very careful and then he'd left, when it had gotten too hard to handle. He'd figured he'd done the right thing, but he'd learned better and he should have waited, should have asked, but the last few minutes had gone by too quickly and now she was backing away from him. He wanted to ask why, had half her name out of his mouth before her words registered and he jerked a bit like she'd hit him. In a way, she had. And he couldn't wrap his head around it. Who the hell was River? What... what was going on? But of course she had someone, of course she did, and he should have been smarter than that. He shouldn't have just...
"Bella-" but she was already gone and he sighed, rubbing at his face with both hands. He just barely managed not to kick something over before falling into his chair and groaning. He didn't want to talk to anyone, see anyone, and he knew he should have gone after her to apologize, at the very least, explain that he hadn't known, but he didn't really want to see her either. Not at the moment. Didn't want to see that look on her face, the one he'd put there. He'd always tried to make things easier for her, never harder. "Great job with that one, Ace." It was a mumble, nothing more, and if he didn't already know where she was going, he might have been tempted to do it himself. He should have known better than to listen to Collin.
