A back alley off of the main Avenue that leads to only more alley ways, making it a maze of back streets. If you know your way around then you're fine, but if not, you could be lost for hours.

Her lithe footsteps slowed as she swung herself into the shadow of the alley, ducking deeper out of sight with a smirk perched on her lips. Sun was sinking quickly as night crept over New York, making the maze of alleys all the more threatening for those unfamiliar with their twists. Fortunately, this was not the first time Maeby Murphy had used the back alleys of the Bronx to evade her victims.
Soon Maeby was walking rather leisurely, a hand dipping into her tattered messenger bag to assess the loot she had acquired that day. A trip to the pawn shop was definitely on the list of errands for the next day, owing to items that were useless to her unless she could make a fair trade.
While most girls might have felt apprehensive in the drafty shadows of the maze, Maeby felt quite at her ease as she wound her way steadily through known routes. Her senses were peeled, as ever, for any sign of company as she moved along. She was smart, Maeby, and knew that speed would be her only advantage should she run into any nasty men along the way.

Jewel walked slowly through the streets of the Bronx...it was almost nightfall and she'd had a good day sellin' papes, but now it was time for some much needed relaxation.
She soon found herself resting by a wall...she leaned against it, and fished a cigarette out of her skirt pocket. She lit the cigarette, and began to enjoy it.
Her mind began to reel about other things....Sweetheart's arrival, having to take care of her now as a Big Sister type. It made her nuts, that she was taking care of a scared 14 year old girl.
Suddenly, as she smoked, she heard noises coming from the alleyway. She looked into the Alleyway, and saw a girl there. Jewel went wide-eyed.
"Hey! Are you alright over there, girl?" Jewel asked.

Her fist clenched and released at her side repeatedly as she walked, at times wriggling her fingers to loosen them. They were the money-makers for her and this was a habit she had picked up over the years. Her mind was drifting as she walked along, though her senses were still heightened to her surroundings.
"Uh," her brow lifted as someone called to her, amusement lacing in her own tone as she called back, "Yep. You?" She moseyed along at her leisure, drawing up to the girl and looking her over. "Lost? Hurt?" Neither of these seemed to be the case and Maeby was sure she had seen the girl around plenty in Brooklyn, though couldn't recall a name.

Jewel shook her head as the girl noticed her. She watched as the girl walked up to her, and looked her over.
*Oh Damn...What a time to run into trouble.* she thought to herself.
She then looked over the girl back...She looked just taller than Jewel, but she was pretty. Jewel inhaled a breath as she continued to smoke.
"I'm not hurt or lost...I live here in the Bronx. But I've never seen you here before. Are you new to town?" Jewel asked.
Jewel hoped she wasn't confusing the poor girl. She smiled, and extended her hand to the girl, hoping to get somewhere with an introduction.
"Hello, My name is Julianne Kent, but my fellow Newsies from Brooklyn and the Bronx call me 'Jewel'...and you are?" She asked.

Maeby had always found it somewhat amusing that newsies thought that if they hadn't seen someone about, that someone must be new. In reality, New York was quite a large city and there were no doubt a great many people who had lived there since birth that most newsies had ever met. This girl, who appeared only a little younger than Maeby, seemed to be one who thought these such things.
"Nope," she shrugged slightly, pushing some hair over her shoulder. "Brooklyn born and raised. I'm just not a newsie."
Maeby had a thing about shaking hands, so she regarded the sign of welcome warily. She made to attempt the connection, but changed her mind last minute and just nodded instead. "Maeby," she returned. "I'm a barmaid at McGinty's." And whatever she had been doing in the Bronx was no concern for Jewel.
"Ain't it past your curfew?" she ventured, not condescendingly. Maeby knew Spot and it seemed unlikely this sweet-seeming girl could belong to his lot.

Jewel wanted to just turn tail and run the other way. This is where her fear set in big time. She knew that New York was a big city, and that there were a lot of people.
This is just the kind of thing she had to worry about. The way she tells Sweetheart to stay away from the Brooklyn residents, and now she's in front of one.
Jewel sighed "It's nice to meetcha, Maeby. So, you work at McGinty's. I know where McGinty's is...got into a fight or two down there. It was always a good night there though." She explained.
Jewel smiled "Well, I live out here now in the Bronx...I live not too far from here in fact. I was stopping for a cigarette." she sighed.
When the mention of a 'curfew' came up, Jewel smiled "I don't have a curfew, Maeby. If I did, I wouldn't be out here still. I just like walking the streets at time just to explore." She explained.

A barmaid, Maeby had seen plenty of fights in the pub. The worst were those involving young girls who thought themselves to be tough when they really ought to have just stood down. Not familiar with Jewel, however, she would assume that she wasn't referring to an actual fight. More like an argument.
"Walking the streets at night isn't really a great idea around here," Maeby commented, though her demeanor didn't really bespeak any fears about the subject. "You should head home, kid. I'll see ya around, yeah?"
For Maeby, this was really quite polite. She must have been in a damn good mood from her day's work, or perhaps just was in no mood to create unneeded drama. She hardly ever enjoyed drama, as it was.

*See, this is why I hate dealing with Brooklyn people. They all think I'm just some fucking child.* Jewel thought to herself with a scowl on her face.
"Look, Maeby, I know how the streets are at this time of night, and I ain't got nothing to worry about out here. I can hold my own pretty well...one girl in Brooklyn already learned that once." Jewel said, trying to stay calm.
She threw her finished cigarette down, and sighed heavily. *The nerve of this woman...A Child. If she weren't so nice ta me..I'd show her how much a child I ain't* Jewel thought.

"Not the girls you should be worried about," Maeby lifted her brows at Jewel's confidence, thinking her unwise. It was certainly for the best that Jewel didn't voice any of her other thoughts. She would have hated to maim a pretty girl who was only fifteen. Honestly.
Visibly unimpressed, Maeby gave a soft laugh as she turned away. "Night, then," she called over her shoulder. If the girl wanted to make foolhardy decisions based on delusions of grandeur, she was more than welcome. Maeby, however, remembered being fifteen and alone in dark alleys. She was wise to the dangers that could present themselves and not so arrogant as to tempt them, thus continued on her way toward Brooklyn.
