It's an empty lot that could be considered a sand lot for playing stick ball, though it's been home to Pete since he was a kid. There is junk all over, some things that have been slammed down to make a base or two but in the corner near one of the buildings is a fort where a falling apart sofa lays. That's where Pete resides by himself most of the time.

((New Day))
Specs struck a match against the bottom of his shoe. "Damn." He tried again. "Damn!" He inspected the match head to see if it was wet. He had seen Racetrack light a match against somebody else's shoe, doing this shouldn't be that hard. He tried again, harder this time, and finally the match caught. So impressed he was by this that he didn't get the flame away fast enough, and there was a slight black sear mark on the sole of his shoe. "Son of a bitch!" Specs looked disdainfully at the bottom of his shoe, wondering if a hole would appear there somehow before the rest of the shoe was worn out. He didn't exactly know the mechanics of burns like these.
Then he remembered the burning match in his hand, and quickly lit his cigarette just as the match was threatening to burn his fingers. He then shook the match out and stared at the black stick of wood for a moment. Damned thing.

Jewel walked along the Bronx...what a hell hole this area was sometimes. But she was determined to make it work for her as long as she lived and worked there.
Her life had been a crazy time since coming to The Bronx. She had gained an enemy, a little sister figure, and a very small case of fear.
As she walked, she saw a guy sitting there, trying to strike a match. She heard him cussing as he unsuccessfully did so. Jewel laughed slightly as she approached the boy.
"Hi, I couldn't help overhearing your little fight with your match there...Would you like a light?" She asked, offering him a book of matches.

Specs looked up. "Oh..." he said, glancing down at the burnt match before tossing it aside. He hadn't realized anyone was nearby. He grinned at the girl's offer of a book of matches. "Say, thanks..." he said. He took the matchbook from her and took a few to place in his pocket for later. That was awful nice of her; matches were sometimes hard to come by.
As he gave the matchbook back to her, he looked at her face. Pretty, was his first thought. Unfamiliar was his second. "Haven't seen you around here before..."

Jewel smiled at the boy, and sat next to him. "Well...you're welcome. I know how it feels to have so much problems with those pesky matches. Especially when it's windy outside. Horrible situation." she said with a laugh/
She looked at the boy, and fished out a cigarett of her own, and lit it. "Never seen -me- around here before? I've lived here for months. The truth is...I've never seen you here before, sweetie." she said.
She stuck out her hand to him. "I'm Julianne...but you can call me 'Jewel'" she said to him.
Jewel thought this boy was to die for. He was cute in his own way, but she didn't mind a guy like him. *Wow...now he looks like a nice type of guy* she thought to herself.

Specs chuckled. "I hear ya. What I wouldn't do for a real lighter..." He took a drag from his cigarette and blew out the smoke slowly. "They're expensive, though. Too much for my kind of salary..."
"I've lived here for months. The truth is...I've never seen you here before, sweetie."
"Months, huh? Well, you must know the lay of the land by now, don't ya?" He switched his cigarette from his right hand to his left and shook her hand. "I'm Specs. I'm one of Jack's boys, down in Manhattan. Jewel, huh? Pretty name." He smiled as he dropped her hand, and put his cigarette to his lips again. "So what brings you out here?"

Jewel sighed as she smoked her cigarette. She couldn't keep her eyes off this guy. He was so nice-looking.
She heard him introduce himself as 'Specs'. Jewel smiled. "Ohhhhh, so you're from Manhattan. I know two people from there. I know Baby, and I met Mush once...Oh, and David." she said.
Jewel nodded "Yeah, I know my way around pretty well..as for how? I just sell in different places...and learned about the right spots." she said.
"What brings me out here, sweetie? Well, to tell you the truth? I was just walking by, and I couldn't help notice how a sweet guy like you was just having some awful trouble with those matches. In the process though, I'm glad I have some kinda of company now." she said.
She threw her signature smile his way, the type that usually helped her with the guys. "So, what brings you out here all the way to my neck of the woods?" she asked him.

Specs didn't think he had ever met anyone called Baby. "Mush and Davey!" He grinned broadly. "They're about the nicest guys anyone can meet. Good to hear you know 'em... Also good to hear you haven't run into Racetrack Higgins." Specs chuckled. He and Race were good friends, but he never missed a chance to poke a little fun at the guy, whether he was there or not.
Specs listened to her, and was impressed. "You get around, huh? You struck me as street smart, soon as I saw you..."
He smiled at her. "Let me tell ya, I don't mind the company either. As for what brings me here?" Specs considered briefly whether he should tell her or not. "Well... fact is, I was lookin' for some kind of job..."

Jewel smiled at him when he named back who she had met in Manhattan, "Yeah, they are nice guys, but David seemed a bit out there when I saw him....and Mush was an tired wreck the day I met him in Tibby's. But he bought me a hot chocolate." she said with a smile and a laugh.'
Jewel blushed a bit. "That's the first time I've heard someone describe me as smart of any kind. People were really mean to me for a while, but I don't wanna talk about it....if that's okay." she said with a smile.
Jewel moved closer to him slightly. She listened to him talk and smiled. "Oh yeah...good I'll be your company then, sweetie. So....what kind of job were you talking about? Don't you already have a job?" she asked.

"Buying a hot chocolate? Sounds like Dave..." Specs knew that David didn't always have a lot of money to spare, after he gave his family what they needed to get by for the week. However, he also knew that Dave was just that kind of nice.
Was she blushing? She was. Cute as all hell. He shrugged one shoulder. "I won't make you go into anythin' you don't want to..." He wasn't interested in hearing about something that someone else didn't want to talk about. "Let's talk about something nice, huh?"
"So....what kind of job were you talking about? Don't you already have a job?"
Specs rugged the back of his neck. "Ah... Well, yeah. I mean, I sell papers... But it's getting to be not enough, y'know? Need something else... More money, I guess."

Jewel smiled at Specs' slip-up. "It was actually Mush who bought me the hot chocolate, he was a prince. But like I said, he was a wreck the day I saw him..exhausted." she said.
Jewel had to try and catch her breath around him. He was cute...and she always held a weakness for cute guys. "Well...what kind of nice things do you wanna talk about with me, sweetie? I'll talk to you about anything you want." she said, winking at him slightly.
*Damn....this boy is actually talking to me...Keep yourself calm, Jewel* she scolded herself slightly. Then she smiled at Specs again.
"Well...what kind of job do you want first off?" she asked, smiling and biting her lip.

Specs shrugged as he finished off his cigarette and put it out against the brick wall next to them. As he pulled out another, he used one of the matches Jewel gave him to light it. "I dunno, doll. I'm honestly none too hot at small talk. Conversation, not really one of my strong points..." He smoked, and a thought occurred to him. "Sorry...you didn't want another cigarette?" He offered her one from his pocket.
"What kind? Oh, I'm not picky. Something that pays well." Specs looked out at the expanse of buildings around him, wondering if he could be working in any of them, maybe living in any of them one day. Fat chance, he thought. "Who'd wanna hire a street rat like me, I have no idea..."

Jewel sighed as she looked at him, tilting her head and biting her lip.
Then she heard his offer of another cigarette. "Thanks, Specs. I could always use another." she said, letting her voice drop to a sexy tone.
As she lit her cigarette, she looked him over, her green eyes tracing every feature of his. She liked the way he looked, and she was determined to at least throw him some hint.
Jewel smiled again "A Street-rat? You are NO street-rat, Specs. You do what you can to make a living and survive, right? Just like myself or any good newsie would do." she said.
"So question for you, cutie. If you're a street-rat...then what does that make me?" she whispered to him in his ear.

Specs raised his eyebrows at her, and grinned. She was giving him a good deal of...attention. And he couldn't say he minded. Not at all. His eyes flit down, then back up again. "I...ah...well. I'm not all too sure, doll. But whatever you are, you're the prettiest one I've ever seen..."
Cautiously, he hazarded a touch... He brought his free hand up and touched her cheek gently, barely even a touch, before taking his hand away again. Then he looked as if he regretted it immediately. "Sorry about that..."

Jewel smiled and closed her eyes. *A nice guy and he pays me a compliment...Oh man.* she thought to herself.
"I...ah...well. I'm not all too sure, doll. But whatever you are, you're the prettiest one I've ever seen..."
Jewel's breath became hitched in her throat when Specs said that to her. She was not used to getting compliments from too many people...and lately that included guys. But Specs was a nice one.
"Thanks, sweetie. You're not so bad-looking yourself, cutie." she said in the same tone as before.
Then she felt him touch her cheek for a brief moment and then take it away. She almost felt like she was floating. "Mmmm...that felt nice." she sighed, her eyes opening to lock with his. "You're forgiven by the way." she smiled.
