sweetheart was so happy to be done with the morning edition. it was a hot day and was glad to just sit on the edge of the bridge and relax. its been at least a few months since she ran away from Missouri and ended up in new york. she was taken in by the bronx newsgirls, and though she didnt have many friends, she was happy that she didnt have to deal with being hurt by her dad.

Milo was glad that he’d bought a lot of papers this morning. He’d had the feeling that it was going to be a good selling day and he’d definitely been right. The Banks family on Ludlow had their whole family over for a reunion even though it was right in the middle of the week and all of them read and didn’t like to share, so he was down more papers in his first ten minutes than he usually was in an hour. Things had been a little bit slower after that, but he managed to sell everything he bought and he’d been done selling for almost an hour. When he was selling in the Czech part of little Germany, his friend Karel told him he saw a dead cat by the river in the Bronx and he thought that he might go bury it if it was still there. He didn’t have a shovel, but he had some time and there wasn’t much else to do. As he walked across the bridge, he looked up at the faces of the people walking past him. Being down where he was, most people didn’t even notice him and it he liked watching what they did when they didn’t think anyone was looking. About halfway across the bridge, he caught sight of a girl that he knew was a Bronx newsie. He’d seen her selling before and he always made sure he remembered the other newsies in case he needed to tell Jack about them selling out of their borough someday. He stopped and looked her up and down to make sure she didn’t have any papes with her. He didn’t see any, so he guessed she was alright, even though she was so close to Manhattan.

Sweetheart sighed just looking off into the distance. she felt like someone was staring at her. only a couple people really noticed her so it seemed unlikely. she suddenly remembered that she was right near the border of Manhattan and she didnt want a manhattan newsie thinking she was selling in their borough. she turned and saw a small kid looking at her. she didnt recognize him, but she gave him a smile all the same.

Milo kept looking up at her, as he often did. One of the best way to sell extra morning additions after the afternoon edition came out was to stare at and follow people who were already kind of annoyed until they bought a paper just to make you go away. Actually, finding ladies with kids who felt sorry for you worked pretty well too, but the staring was more fun. She didn't look like she knew him, even though she was smiling. It was just the kind of smile that grown-ups always gave to little kids that they didn't know. Normally, he would just keep watching until her smile went away. It was always pretty funny to see how people acted when they didn't know what they were supposed to do anymore. But since she was a newsie, he thought he should be nice to her. After only a few moments, he gave her a slight smile, took hold of her hand and headed in the direction of the Bronx so they could go down to the river. She looked like she didn't have all that much to do either and she was bigger than him. He could use help with the cat. It could be fun.

Milo wasn't surprised that the girl just went with him. He could tell that she was that kind of a grown-up. He'd been on his own for long enough that he knew what he could and couldn't do to people just by looking at their faces. When you're small, you have to know that or you can get in lots of trouble really fast.
When they finally reached the river, he looked around at the banks for the cat. He didn't see it just yet, but it could still be there. Karel didn't really say exactly where it was and it was a pretty big river. He started to lead the girl closer to the bridge, but, just then, she spoke up and he stopped to look up at her. He gave her a long appraising stare, trying to decide if he should reply or not. He didn't talk to a lot of people and he definitely didn't give them his name most of the time, but since she was a newsie and a girl,he thought that it was probably pretty safe and in the end he answered in a small voice. "Milo" he said curtly, leaving it at that. Just because he was talking didn't mean he had to chatter.

Sweetheart could tell that he wasnt much of a talker so she didnt ask him anything else. she stayed quiet but she started wondering why he brought her here but she refrained from asking him. she sat down on the banks and just watched the river. she didnt mind the silence but she had a few wuestions for the kid.

The girl didn't seem like she wanted to look around for the cat, so he went off on his own with his eyes fixed on the ground for either a whole cat or just a skeleton of one. Karel didn't say much about what it was like. All he knew was that Karel said that Dušek poked it with a stick. He kept looking for awhile but he couldn't find it anywhere. Somebody must have already found it. Or maybe it wasn't dead after all. Dušek wasn't that smart and he lied a lot. He might have never poked it at all and just thought it was dead when it was really sleeping. Either way, he didn't have anything to bury anymore, so he just went back over to where the girl was and sat down next to her. She wasn't too bad to be around. She didn't talk too much at least and that was nice.
