Right off the edge is the river below. Don't go takin' a long walk off a short dock! You might just end up sleepin' with the fishes.

*NEW DAY* Lexi walked to the end of the dock, staring out over the river. As soon as she reached the edge she sat down, dangling her feet over the river. It seemed like the past few months were moving in slow motion. Although she still thought about Perry every day and tended to cry herself to sleep at night she still got out of bed and worked. She was beginning to heal, she knew it deep in her heart. It helped that she had Dodger. He had been busy and she hadn't seen much of him but she knew if she really needed him he would be there for her without a second thought. With a sigh, she wiped a stray tear from her cheek and smiled as she felt the breeze on her face. She'd always miss him, she was well aware of that but she had to harden herself if she was going to survive and she knew he'd forgive her for it. As much as she missed her brother life was going on around her and she wasn't willing to lay in bed and cry away the rest of hers. Opening the book in her hand, she began to read the last chapter. She'd promised herself that when she was done with it she would give the book to one of the younger kids and let them enjoy it as much as Perry had when he was alive. It would help her move on and she needed to move on whether she like it or not.

Shamrock shuffled his feet down the dock, kicking a pebble as he went. He had just finished selling the morning edition and was now looking for something to do or someone to talk to. The docks seemed like a good place to go to try to find his friends at their usual fishing spot but none of them were around.
Shamrock kick the tiny pebble one last time, right off the dock, and watched as it plopped into the water, making ripples that slowly grew as they moved outwards. As the ripples finally faded, he looked up and noticed someone sitting at the end of the dock. He shuffled a bit closer and noticed that it was Lexi, the girl in charge of Pallet's lodging house.
Shamrock walked up behind her and cleared his throat so as not to startle her before he spoke. "Hey Lexi." He shoved his hands into his pockets.

Lexi glanced up and smiled when she heard her name called. Inwardly, she cringed seeing a little boy but quickly reminded herself that he was much older and taller then her brother. He really wasn't that little at all. Brightening her smile a bit she offered him a nod, "Hey, Shamrock. How ya been?"
Marking the page in her book, she set it aside and twisted her body to be able to look at him better. Judging by his appearance he seemed to be okay which was always a good thing in her book. Then again Lexi knew better than most that looks were deceiving.

"Hey, Shamrock. How ya been?"
Shamrock shrugged his shoulders, "Eh.. Been better. Selling's been a bit slow, so I thought I'd see if any of me mates were down here fishing, but don't look like it. How are you?"
Shamrock watched the older girl for a minute or two, trying to gauge her mood. He had heard about what happened to her little brother Perry--who was only a bit younger than him--so he knew that she had been real melancholy since then. He and several of the young boys tried to avoid bumping into her--as the Dodger and the older boys suggested, saying that it would probably remind her of Perry--as often as the could but she seemed to be doing alright with him here today. Maybe she was doing better now.
"Watcha reading?" Shamrock asked, motioning to the spot next to her on the dock, silently asking if it was alright to sit.

Lexi smiled softly at Shamrock's reply before offering a small shrug at his question, "I'm good." Good as can be expected with everything going on but she was not going to say that to Shamrock. She could barely bring herself to say it to Dodger because she hated to burden someone else with things like that. In all honesty, she was doing better though. She had learned how to cope with the loss.
Her smile brightened when he asked about the book, "Peter Pan." She wasn't sure he'd ever heard of it because it really hadn't been out that long. Then again she knew that when she'd finished reading it to Perry he'd gone around pretending to be Peter Pan for nearly a month.
((OOC: Uh, I know Peter Pan wasn't published til like 1908 but I figured it was close enough.))

Shamrock sat down on the dock next to Lexi, "Peter pan?" He tried to recall all of the books Pallet and Byron used to read to him back in Ireland. He could remember listening to The Brother's Grimm, Jungle Book, some story about a girl named Alice following a rabbit down a hole, and his favorite book Treasure Island--because he loved pirate books--, but he couldn't remember ever hearing Peter Pan. "What's it about? It's not some stupid girls' book, is it?"
Shamrock took some stones out of his pocket that he had collected and began skipping them across the surface of the water. He loved watching the stones jump across the water, causing ripples that would slowly grow. He and his buddies often came down to the water to have contests to see who was the best stone skipper. It had taken him a while to learn, but now he was one of the best.

Lexi laughed when he asked if it was a girls book, "I hardly think so. It's about a boy who lives on a magical island with his friends and never grows up." She smiled and set the book to the side. "What're you doing out here, anyway?"
She figured he'd be off with his friends since it looked like he was done selling for the day. As the wind picked up a bit, she wrapped her shawl tighter around her body. Lexi couldn't keep the smile off her face as she watched him skip rocks.

Shamrock offered Lexi a couple rocks to skip. "I finished selling early so I came looking for the fellas to see if they were fishing or something, but they ain't here... obviously." He skipped his last rock before leaning over the the edge of the dock to stare down into the water.
Out of the corner of his eye, Shamrock saw Lexi pulling her shawl tighter around herself to ward off the cold. The cold didn't bother him. Living in Ireland you got used to the cold and the rain. There was more rain then cold giving Ireland its lush green landscapes. As years passed, it was getting harder for him to remember his home and his family so, he was glad to have his sister's paintings of his parents and their home to refresh his memory.
Shamrock leaned back away from the edge of the dock and looked over at Lexi. "What're you doing out here, Lexi?"

Lexi chuckled quietly, "Sorry no ones around but me." She gave him a wide smile as she took the rocks from his hand. It had been years since she'd skipped rocks, but she was pretty sure she still remembered how. Pulling her arm back, she tossed one out over the river and let a gleeful laugh when it skipped five times. "I almost thought I might've forgotten how to do that."
She turned, smiling, and gave a slight shrug. "Just enjoying being outside before it gets too cold for me." She hated winter because she usually ended up trapped indoors unless she had work. Her body had never really been able to take the low temperatures. She turned back to the river, throwing another rock out and smiling when it skipped a few times.

Shamrock chuckled, "You're good at that. Did you teach yourself to do that?" He watched one of her rocks skim over the surface of the water eight times before sinking to the bottom. He was amazed. His buddies and He had only ever gotten them to skip six times; never eight.
Shamrock smiled as he watched as she tossed another stone. "The cold don't bother me too much. I'm used to it. From what little I can remember Ireland was always cold and wet. We always just dressed warm and bared with it. Since coming here though, Pallet won't stop fussing over me. Always making sure I'm dressed warm, always making sure I'm back home before too late, always making me give her the money I earned for the day... It's annoying. I'm fourteen. I'm not a baby. I can take care of myself. And I dont know what she needs to go saving money up for. We ain't going nowhere..." Talking about the motherly ways of his older sister brought a scowl to his face.

Lexi shook her head, "My dad taught me when I was little." She smiled at the memory, it was one of the few good ones she had of her father after her mother died. He had taken her and her brothers on a picnic and he'd taught both her and Reid how to do it. Perry had been too young still, but Lexi had taught him when he was older.
She couldn't help but laugh at Shamrock's tirade about his sister being motherly. She remembered being on the receiving end of a similar when Reid had been his age. Perry had never really minded though, he hadn't gotten to age where it became bothersome. Lexi gave him a large smile, "I'm sure she'll realize that soon, she's probably just used to looking after you."

Shamrock tossed the last of his stones and watched it skim the surface of the water--one, two, three, four, five times. Damn it, he thought. I'll figure it out someday. He gave Lexi a crooked smile, "Maybe if she gets something to take up her attention, she'll spend less time worrying 'bout me--like a fella or something." He chuckled.
Shamrock stood up and brushed his pants off. "Well, Mi'lady," he smirked. "May I walk you back to the Lodging House? It's getting chilly out here." He offered Lexi his hand and bowed--trying to copy the way he had seen Byron do it before. Lexi was older then him, but Byron always said you treated every lady with respect no matter the station or age. If he was going to be like Byron--be an English gentleman like him--he had to start sooner or later. And, he figured the gesture would put a smile of amusement on Lexi's face.

Lexi laughed and shook her head, "Maybe you should find someone to set her up with." Lexi grinned at him and took his hand, "Why that would be wonderful, good sir." She said with a smile on her face as she turned back towards the street. She had a feeling it wouldn't be long before he found a girl to occupy his time, especially if he was suck a little gentleman. "So who taught you your manners?"

<New Day - Open>
Ki carried the crate over and stacked it with the others, letting out a grunt of satisfaction at the fact that the hardest labor for the day was now complete. Not that Ki minded the physical labor, as he'd explained to Devan it helped keep him in shape while he was away from the circus, but with the sun beating down and the seemingly endless pile of crates, he was grateful the task was complete. Pausing for a rest, Ki leaned against the nearest pile and gazed out over the water, giving a short thought to how inviting it looked, especially after an afternoon of work. But the reality was the water was probably still frigid, the sun having not been beating enough days to warm it and besides, he still had a couple of hours left on shift.
Maybe after work he'd see if Devan wanted to go grab some dinner - cooking was still something that neither of them really risked, though Ki did alright when push came to shove. But he had some money in his pocket now from the job and chances were any place they decided to eat would have better food than anything he could cook up. They'd probably end up at Tibby's again, that seemed their go to place and Ki didn't mind it much, he still remembered his first meal there with Half Pint when he first arrived in town. Perhaps he could talk Devan into taking in a show at Irving Hall if she had a mind, he'd heard some good things from the other guys on the dock and Ki was getting restless with staying at the apartment all the time. There was a shout from the other end of the dock and Ki sighed, rubbing a hand over his face before pushing away from the pile of crates - time to get back to work.
