Aura stepped off of the grimy sidewalk, nervously adjusting her blouse as she walked. She groaned when she felt her boot come undone again. She hadn't been working lately, and she needed new boot laces, so that this could stop.
She moved around a pair of children playing jacks in the dim lights of the oil-lamps on the streets. Didn't their parents tell them to go back inside after dark? This place ain't safe past dusk.

((NEW DAY))
Lukas was perched on the lowest level of a fire escape waiting. The back exit to the restaurant was lined with crates and piles of trash and refuse, a disgusting sight. However he was hungry and if you timed it right you would actually get some good scraps.
A few minutes later the door opened and a busboy dumped another bucket full of half eaten food into the gutter. As soon as he disappeared Lukas jumped from his perch and started to dig through the remains. A moment later he uncovered a turkey leg, about half the meat attached, and still warm. He grinned and took a big bite.

Phoenix had no idea where she was or how she had gotten this far from home. But then, she had wanted to explore New York a little. She sighed and kicked at an empty can that was in her path. She looked up when she heard someone digging in the trash. When she saw that the boy was eating a half-eaten turkey leg, she wrinkled her nose in disgust.
"Tha's disgustin'." she grimaced. "'Ow can yah eat that?"

Lukas spun around, his jaw slowly stopped moving and his eyes looked down at the hunk of meat. Lots of people ate out of the trash...but no one wanted to admit it, that was just embarrassing. Just as slowly as he had stopped, he began to chew again and took another big bite.
"Jus' like this" he snorted and started to chew with his mouth open and over animated. He bent over and pulled up some other sort of mangled meaty bone from the pile and tossed it at her "try some!"

Phoenix caught the meaty bone out of reflex, but she didn't take a bite. Instead, she tossed it back and sighed. "'M sorry. Dat was a rude t'ink tah ask. 'S none o' my business anyway." She reached into her pocket and pulled out a couple oranges. "Wan' one? 'S bettah than eatin' outta da garbage anyway."

Lukas snickered a bit watching her catch the bone, chewing his meat like cud. It looked at her completely uninterested right until the brite orange was pulled from his pocket. His eyes widened and he walked closer to her and sized her up. "What's the catch, nosy?" He asked skeptically, his eyes glued to the fruit. "People jus' don't give fruit like that away in the dead of wintah..."

"There ain't no catch." Phoenix shook her head with a glare. "I'se just wonderin' if you'd rathah gnaw on an oahnge than a dirty old bone." she stuffed them back into her pocket. "But if you don' want it..."

"NOOO!" Lukas shouted as the oranges disappeared. He wanted that piece of fruit more than anything. He put the turkey in his coat pocket and wiped his hands on his pants. "I would really like some...." His voice went into a mumble, hoping that being pathetic might re-convince the girl to hand some over.

Phoenix raised an eyebrow as the boy took on a mumble. As if she didn't see right through it anyway. But still, it was cold and she just couldn't stand to see any one in such a predicament as he was. She took an orange out of her pocket again and tossed it to him. "Here. No need tah staht beggin'."

Lukas let out a self congratulating laugh and started to peel off the peel greedily. "Jus' so ya know..I wasn't beggin'.." He said with a little attitude now that he had gotten his way, "I conned you!" He smirked back at her. Again it was just another example of his ability to convince himself he was tougher, and more clever than everyone knew he was.

Phoenix rolled her eyes. "If you weren't beggin', den I ain't a newsie." She snorted then shook her head. "An' 'splain tah me 'ow you conned me when I was gonna give you da oahnge anyway?"

"See ya...ya" He stuttered for a moment, "you don't even realize you was conned!" Lukas' voice got louder as he went on, "Thats what a con is! So there!" He had lost this one...but that was an easily overlooked detail in his mind. He let out a bit of a frustrated squeak. "You Manhattan newsie...no street smarts, too soft.." He huffed. He assumed she was from Manhattan since he did not recognize her, and thats where they happened to be.

Phoenix snorted in amusment as the boy tried to explain his way out of her NOT being conned. He was arrogant and obviously just had to have his way, but he was amusing at any rate. As for his jab about her being a Manhattanite, well, that was just plain not true. "Nah, I'm from the Bronx, actually. I got lost tryin' tah find me way somewhere an' ended up here. We're in 'Hattan, huh? Well, 'least I know where I am now." she eyed the boy critically. "What borough you from?"

Lukas blinked at her for a moment - he was so sure that she had been from Manhattan. He wrinkled up his nose and let out a little 'hmph'. "Guess there jus' lettin' anybody in now.." He slouched and adjusted the waist of his pants a bit, "Bronx as well. An yeah, we're in Midtown actually...so we're even. You give me an orange I tell you where you are..." He decided to drop the whole con thing...this worked out better anyways, he didn't look quet as stupid.
