To him a nickname made him more of a newsie. Age: 16 Place of Origin: Tokyo, Japan/San Francisco, California Occupation: Newsie Public Knowledge: Twitchy, eyes always wandering|speaks Japanese|knows how to speak fluent English with barely any accent History Takeshi was born in Tokyo, Japan and moved to San Francisco, California when he was 8. The Matsumura family was your typical Japanese family. Takeshi’s father, Keiji was the head of the household—he worked building railroad tracks to provide for his family—and his mother, Honoka was the caregiver—she stayed at home cooking, cleaning, raising their seven children, and caring for her husband’s elderly parents. He had three older brothers, Ichiro, Seiji, and Jun, two older sisters, Yuki and Aya, and a younger sister, Rei. They were a very close family until Takeshi was 14… With all his older siblings getting married, they had less and less time for Takeshi. Less time with his siblings meant more time getting himself in trouble. His curiosity and adventurous nature was always getting in him into trouble; something his family did not approve of. His father believed in a strong work ethic and his mother believed in preserving their Japanese culture and matchmaking for all her children; none of which interested Takeshi. After being carefully watched and tutored until he was 13—when he was considered a man—he was more interested in experiencing the American way of life and exploring every part of the city that he could. His explorations caused him to fall in with a group of troublemaking young teenage boys and one too many close calls with the police. His parents were at their wits end and tired of worrying about what their neighbors would think of them having a disobedient son… Takeshi was sent to New York City to live with and work for his sister’s new husband. His parents bought him a train ticket and sent him away hoping that his brother-in-law would have a good influence on him. After arriving in NYC and seeing the vastness of it all, his adventurous nature could barely be contained. When his brother-in-law picked him up from the station, he was vibrating with excitement. He worked for his brother-in-law for two days, before his spirited, adventurous nature got the better of him. He snuck out of the house one morning and began to wander the streets. On his exploration, he ran into a few newsies and befriended them; figuring it to be more fun to live and work with kids his own age, he wrote his sister and brother-in-law a note explaining his need to experience life his own way and moved into the Manhattan Lodging house with his new friends. Every so often his sister will visit his selling spot to check up on him to see he is healthy and happy, and Takeshi will give her money to send home to their parents.
