DAPHNE “HAWKEYE” SHERETTI

Hawkeye could described as playful. She could also be described as troublesome. It really depends on exactly who’s doing the describing. Hawkeye has fashioned the term “endearing rabble-rouser” for herself. She has a severe dislike of anything routine and regularly mixes up her selling spots.
Hawkeye has a perpetual impish glint in her eyes and a bemused smile can often be found playing at her lips. Her eyebrows shoot up when she’s excited and she bites her bottom lip when she’s feeling worried or nervous. Though occasionally short-tempered, Hawkeye is usually found with a cheery disposition.
Through a series of close-kept connections throughout the city, Hawkeye almost always knows what’s going on and has an odd tendency to know what horse to bet on at the races, despite not having a particularly strong interest in horse racing. She claims she “just has a good feeling” about the winning horse and refuses to give any more information than that.
Standing at only five feet and two inches, Hawkeye can be quite loud when she wishes, compensating for her height (or lack of). Having attended a boarding school for five years, Hawkeye is one of the more well-spoken newsies, though she imitates the speech patterns of her peers when selling papers; buyers seem to feel sorrier for her that way. She also uses her stature to her advantage and, when selling, tries to dress and act significantly younger than she is.
Hawkeye is a little actress in her own right. She is overly confident in her abilities, though not without good reason. She takes on the role of a poor, young newsgirl with ease. Her story generally includes deceased parents and three young siblings who depend on Hawkeye to come home with a small bit of bread to get them through the cold, New York nights. A talented liar, Hawkeye holds her own when selling and rarely requests the help of a partner.
With a little more than half a conscience, Hawkeye has nights where she’s kept awake by pangs of guilt, brought on by her selling façade. Not that they stop her from doing what she does best, but they do incline her to give some money earned from a dishonest day of work to poor kids she spots on the streets. She doesn’t feel like it makes her a good person, but she firmly believes that it makes her a better person than she’d be if she didn’t share some of her pocket money with the people who actually depend on a bit of bread to get them through the night.HISTORY
Born in Suffolk County, Long Island, Daphne Jane Sheretti was immediately placed into an orphanage in Babylon. As she grew up, multiple couples popped into her life and she was almost adopted several times. But no one seemed to want Daphne as much as she wanted them. When she reached age seven, the orphanage was practically overflowing with kids. Daphne was sent to a nearby boarding school for girls. Most nights at school were tearful ones; in addition to now having no friends, Daphne also had no chance of being adopted. She watched jealously as parents visited the other girls at school and drew pictures of herself with parents, a big brother, a little sister, and a cat when she was alone.
Five years passed and Daphne had long ceased lamenting her lack of family. Her new interested was breaking routine. Instructors kept the girls on a strict schedule that never changed. Ever. At age twelve, Daphne packed a small bag of the few belongings she owned and snuck away from the boarding school. It was her last night in Babylon.
For almost two years, Daphne lived on the streets, traveling anywhere and everywhere she could. She claims she’s been everywhere on Long Island and she prides herself on never having been seen in the same city twice. The truth behind her claim is debatable, as Miss Sheretti also prides herself on being a very talented liar.
Eventually, Daphne made it out off Long Island and found herself in Queens. She spent a while working as a flower girl on the streets, as the job provided her with both money and lodgings. She was quick to spot customers and quicker to spot money in a back pocket. Often said to have eyes like a hawk, Daphne earned herself the nickname Hawk, occasionally Hawkeye, and “Daphne” became scarce.
She was spotted on the streets by a newsboy one day and, after observing her selling techniques, suggested she stop by the lodging house sometime. A few days passed and the newsboy’s offer was taken. Introducing herself by her “full name,” Hawkeye, she quickly landed herself a job, working as a Queens newsie for several months.
After an ugly falling out with several close friends in the lodging house, Hawkeye left, moving to sell in Brooklyn instead. While she got along fine with most of the Brooklynites, Hawkeye didn’t always agree with how things were handled in the lodging house and relocated to Manhattan within a few months, where she’s remained since. Occasionally she disappears and wanders around nearby parts of New York, selling odd bobbles and bits to makes ends meet, but she usually comes back to Manhattan. Usually.HAWKEYE
