Age: 17 Place of Origin: Greenwich Village Occupation: Newsie, Manhattan leader Public Knowledge: Leader of the Manhattan newsies, commands respect, very independent. History The young lovebirds Matthew "the Snake" Sullivan and Amelia Scottsdale ran away together and eloped. He was an outlaw just a day and a half away from the gallows; she was the banker's daughter, pretty but dim and naive. They caught a train east from El Paso and ended up in New York City, where Matthew promised Amelia he would get an honest job, just for her. She got work as a factory worker at the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory. He would occasionally look for jobs...but would never find one. Soon, Amelia gave birth to a son, named Francis. It was a joke, almost, for Matthew: Francis had been the first name of the sheriff who booked him. Francis was eight when his mother contracted a venereal disease that not only made her very weak, but proved that she had been cheating on her husband. The disease killed her, and Matthew buried her without compassion, but with an intense amount of love nonetheless. He set out, found the man who had been his wife's lover, and killed him. Matthew was arrested for murder, and because of his previous crimes was thrown into jail for an extremely long amount of time. Francis took to the streets, and made his living as a pickpocket. He was fourteen when he was caught, and thrown into the refuge. Three months later, he made his famous escape on the back of Teddy Roosevelt's carriage. He knew he shouldn't risk stealing again, so he looked to selling newspapers. When he was sixteen, the leader of the Manhattan newsies left his post, and Jack Kelly, as he was now referred to as, took the position with his charisma and charm. He's bee living with the newsies ever since.
