WAR... Have the Three Realms known anything but war? It has only been less than twenty years since the end of the War of the Serpents and already another one is ready to take it's place. The old king Paulus Bronagh died without a legitimate male heir and his crown passes on to his distant cousin, Stephen Roldren. But tension exists while Paulus' daughter, Caitiriona, fights for the right to rule. In fear of assasination, she flees to the island region of Cairland where she is crowned Queen and begins to muster a force strong enough to challenge the royal armies. Meanwhile, an ancient blood feud bars the Ridgemen and Rangemen of the northern regions from following a Roldren King, and their strong sense of tradition keeps from bowing to any Queen. Withdrawing their alliance from the Three Kingdoms, they retreat behind the mountains and into their own lands where they crown their own ruler—Risteard Fenshore, King of Brenhin. Once a single kingdom, now divided into three. Stars hide your fires! Let not light see my black and deep desires
