His father, Markus, was a Texas Ranger until his untimely death. When Rafe and his twin were ten their parents were gunned down in their home by one of his fathers numerous enemies. Rafe found the bodies but kept his sister from seeing them. Although the other rangers searched for the murderer he was never recovered. Rafe's aunt came to live with him and his sister until their grandfather could send for them. They went to live in New York (Brooklyn to be exact) when their grandfather gathered enough money for their travels. He spent the next six years of his life yearning for the open roads again. New York was crowded and dirty. He missed Texas and he saved every penny to return to his home state as soon as he was able. Shortly after he turned sixteen he realized he had enough money to get home and buy a mount. Although he was heartbroken to leave his twin in New York he knew he couldn't take her with him. After he returned to Texas he joined the military to begin his training to eventually become a ranger. It was shortly before he was to become said ranger that his sister entered his life again. More then a few years had passed so he wasn't surprised that she'd returned with a husband. It was hard to imagine his sister married but he couldn't expect any less. Rafe hadn't had time yet to marry again. He was too busy with his career but he did plan to some day. At first, he thoroughly enjoyed the company of his brother-in-law, but then he began to notice the strange things the man did. His gaze lingered on the younger girls for far too long. When Rafe realized what could be happening, he took to following the man when he left his home at night. It didn't take long for him to come upon the man assaulting a young girl no more then twelve. Rafe was disgusted and beat his brother-in-law silly, but he didn't tell his sister right away. The man had begged him not to and although Rafe really wanted to tell her he hated to break her heart. Her husband promised to not do it any more and even though Rafe didn't really believe him he let it lie. Of course the man didn't keep his word for long. The second time Rafe came across Danial Ryder assaulting a young girl, he shot him in the head. He had the girl help him carry the body to his sisters house and told her to sit in the corner and wait for him. He woke his sister from a dead sleep and informed her that they were leaving Texas. He could see that she was confused but his tone brokered no arguments. It was plain for her to see when she descended the stairs and saw her husband lying dead and small girl crying the corner what had happened. He gave the girl some money and told her to run home. They set out for New York that night and haven't looked back. Although Rafe regrets not being able to continue in his duties, he knew that shooting a man like Danial would have repercussions on not only him but his sister. It was safer for them in New York. When they arrived it was plain to see that their grandfather had one foot already in the grave. He left them the bar in his will and they have been running it together ever since. They added a second floor with three rooms so that they each may occupy their own and rent out the third as needed. It's a simple life in a crowded city, but Rafe finds he enjoys it more now then he did as a boy.
