There are guards here, beware!

Shiner shrieked and felt a grubby hand clamp sharply around her mouth. The guard half walked and half dragged her out to the back door, managing to finagle her away from the others quickly enough so her missing in the fray wouldn't be notice. Most were scattering away, the guards catching who they could and hauling them off who knew where.
She could hear the fighting already starting, yelling and crunching and shouting. But she couldn't see it. The back door dumped out into an alleyway, but there was a nice little alcove to hide the door a bit. Enough space so the guard could hold her to the brick wall without them being spotted immediately by anyone passing the alley.
Shiner gasped slightly, clawing at the man's hand around her throat, pressing her to the wall behind her. He loosened up, but only so she could breath, not talk. He pressed his body close to hers, grabbing both her small weakened wrists in one hand. Tears came to her eyes as his face drew nearer to hers and she felt his foul breath at her ear as he whispered something to her so horrific she wished she could trade places with Nike.
Shiner struggled, but shortly as his grip tightened on her neck and he licked at her cheek. She trembled, unable to scream or even whimper and looked past his hulking body and the opposing brick wall to the entrance of the alley praying for anyone to come by. Or that he might change his mind and just kill her now.

Lucky was there with Zeke and it was Zeke that struck. Lucky'd never thought about having a minion before but the Brooklyn Boxer wasn't so bad to have around like that. He grabbed the man by the jaw, giving him the shock of his life and he yanked him away from Shiner. Allowing Lucky to get to the girl.
"Shiner right?" she had only met the girl all of once but that was enough for her to remember a name. "Good name, and you've got a few to show for it.. stay behind me alright?"
She watched Zeke take down the man before slamming his head into the wall, letting the blood spatter tell him when to stop before he dropped him and looked back at Lucky. "Take her an' go Lucks I'm headin' inside.."
Lucky nodded and moved an arm around the girls shoulders, she'd needed Zeke but without him around a dangerous smirk crossed her face as she edged Shiner up. "Come on doll, get you to safety.." Hey Brooklyn had it's hero moments.
They were big damn heroes.

Shiner gasped for air feeling the hand release from her neck and slumped against the wall. She tensed feeling arms around her shoulders, then looked to the girl, recognizing her from somewhere. She didn't think Lucky was a Manhattan newsie. Shiner opened her mouth to ask her, to thank her as well, but found she couldn't speak. She still felt light headed and half followed, half stumbled along with Lucky.
The passed the man, whom Zeke had taken down so quickly Shiner hadn't the time to even register what had happened. Shiner felt sick seeing him. So much blood pooling around his head. Had he just been killed?

Lucky used her strength to edge the girl up a bit more and looked over to where Zeke had vanished. "I'm Lucky by the way.. " she could tell the girl was having a hard time and she sighed pulling her to a stop to check her throat, there were already brusies forming.
"Got ya good. Don't try an' talk. Just come on.." she got the girl more firmly. "I'll get ya to one of the manhattan lot.... I heard that Skittery kept tryin to put Race in a wig as a decoy..." she was trying to lighten the mood, the girl had been threw hell.

Shiner might have given a laugh had she been listen to Lucky, or if she could speak at the moment. The man had choked her pretty good, but she was sure she'd heal up after an hour or so. Lucky, the girl had said her name was? Lucky for Shiner she'd come around. Shiner tightened her grip a bit on Lucky in gratitude and for her own support. She felt rattled, dazed.
Skittery. Race. Those names she knew. Lucky was a nice girl and saved her from something Shiner would never repeat to anyone, but as selfish as it might seem, and as guilty as she felt, Shiner would rather be with someone she knew.
She glanced back to the door, wondering how many kids were still inside and how much of a fight was going on inside there.

Lucky spotted Smalls not far off and kept up with Shiner to where she saw Bumlets using the blunt end of his broomstick on a man's jaw. She patted the girl's back and let out a whistle to get the Manhattan boys attention before she nodded too him bringing Bumlets running up quickly.
Bumlets had never been one for words but he looked down at Lucky and offered her a half smile before he just tucked his arms around Shiner's legs and shoulders and picked her up, letting Lucky bet back to what she needed to do. He held Shiner close and looked around a bit. "You'll be safe no, don't worry.."
Lucky gave him a salute and was off again, she pulled out her knife. Without Zeke as a body blocker it was just the tiny brunette, and she wasn't going to let anyone get the drop on her.

Shiner looked forward again when Lucky patted her back, as if attempting to gain her attention. She tried a bit of a smile, seeing Bumlets, or at least thought she did. She couldn't tell. Things were all happening to quickly. And all the fighting! So engrossed with attempting to pick out other faces she knew in the fray, she wasn't ready when Bumlets lifted her from the ground. She threw her arms around his neck quickly, holding almost too tight at first before burying her face in his shoulder. She couldn't watch the fight. She'd seen enough blood spilled for the rest of her life as far as she was concerned.
Her head lifted again, the tears that had been brought on by the man's threat began falling with the realization that maybe no one else knew.
"Nike's dead."

Bumlets never knew how to handle women, he had a mother and a sister and still the functions of being a comfort were lost on him. But he decided against whatever was going threw his mind and he held her as he walked away from the battle best as he could, calling Skittery or anyone really to cover his back so he could get away. His mind drew to a stop when she spoke. Nike? Who was Nike? He was ashamed to admit he didn't care to much about the other girls in the other boroughs because he had a hard time caring about the ones in his own.
But he let out a soft sigh, "It's okay Shiner.. you're safe... don't worry.." Shit, friend was dead and he was telling her not to worry. "I'm really not good at this.." but he was trying! That was something!

She managed to give him a sympathetic look before burying her face in his shoulder again, trying his best not to start weeping. He was trying at least. She would attempt to make it easier on him by not bursting into tears. She was tired, but after a few moments placed her hand on the boy's shoulder, sniffling, "It's okay, Bumlets. I can walk. I... I'm not hurt, I'm just..."
She couldn't think of the words and wiped at her eyes, waiting for him to let her down. They'd probably move quicker getting to safety.

He looked around and shook his head after a moment, "I've got ya Shiner... " He pat her back and decided that he would do what he would do if his sister or niece had been in this place or position. "You don't need to worry, okay?" And he was relieved she wasn't hurt, his hand ran over his back as he carried the much smaller girl threw the chaos. "Tuck your head, don't look... we'll get you home.."

He moved quicker and Shiner knew he wasn't about to let her down until they were clear of danger. She wasn't sure weather to be mad at him for not listening to her, or mad at him for doing what was probably best. She wasn't really sure if she wanted, or could, walk nevermind run very far. But where was safety? At the moment she couldn't even recognize the buildings around the wearhouse. Where was he planning on taking her?
Going futher past the fray she spotted Dutchy standing around something with a few other boys, an iron poker sitting lazily on his shoulder. She ducked her head down again, deciding she didn't want to see anymore. She knew Bumlets carried that broomstick where ever he went, but she never really thought he might attack anyone with it. They were all rather nice to her, considering what she had been through when she first came, considering how foolish she felt and how ashamed she was of leaving them without much of a goodbye, and considering how guilty she was when attempting to return just to see any of them again.
And then there was that day when she walked into Bumlets in the tub, she thought with her cheeks turning a little red remembering it, and here he was, having the decency to carry her away from this mess. She didn't want him to go back into the fight. That meant getting hurt. Of course she didn't want anyone getting hurt. She hoped the others felt the same and would just grab the kids inside and get out as quickly as they could. Revenge be damned. Nike was dead. They didn't need any more casualities.

He looked down at her head and frowned a little bit, he'd never really been all that nice to Shiner for a lot of reasons. And most of them were his own anxiety, he didn't want women fawning all over him like they did most of his friends. Honestly he didn't have a lot of respect for those women. The ones that he'd managed to get to know, well he cared about them. Shiner, Brook, Sweet and then there was Mabel. He was just glad that she wasn't anywhere near this entire mess.
His eyes shifted down to where Shiner's body was in his arms and he looked ahead again, picking up the pace even more. "I'm taking you back to Manhattan where it's safe, might let you stay with my mom okay?" What? Had Bumlets just offered his mother as a safe haven for someone he didn't actually know that well? Where his friends rubbing off on him. He felt like Shiner might need something like that and he would carry her as far as he could. Get to the trains and get the girl home.
This was something that he'd never really thought about, he wasn't a hero. He was doing what he thought was necessary for one of their own. She was a newsie. When it came down to it they were family. "My moms is probably the safest place I can think of right now.." he mused almost to himself.

Shiner's eyes filled with tears again, suddenly and she wasn't entirely sure why. Maybe she just couldn't hold them back any longer, maybe it was because, of all places, Bumlet's was offering to take her to his own mother's. She didn't even know he had one. She felt awful for just assuming so, but more than likely the people who did live at the lodging were there because they had to be. She knew Dutchy still believed his parents were alive, somewhere, but just hadn't the financial means to return to him. It was why he was occasionally tight with his own money and saved it so well.
Shiner suppressed a sob, but shook her head, "That's sweet, Bumlets, really, but..." she stopped herself from saying "I want to go home" and risk sounding childish and weeping. She took a deep breath, "Where ever is closer." She was hungry and tired and would rather sleep than make herself sick worrying over who was going to come back bloody when there wasn't a damn thing she could do. "I don't even know where we are..."

He looked down at her and was confused for a moment, well it wasn't like Bumlets shared much. Not even his name. He sighed and thought about what he could do to put the girl at ease. Trying to figure something out he let out a breath, "We'll figure out something on the way, Shiner. By the way.. you can call me Brian.." Well that was his name, names were like-- the holy grail to newsies. Giving out your real name was a sign of trust. Even Jack wasn't HIS real name. He kept walking, the sounds of the fighting getting farther and farther away. The boys would be alright without him. He was sure of that. They were all scrappers.
"Bet you didn't even know I had my mom alive did you? I've got a sister too, she's older than I am, has two kids.." he kept walking, ignoring the way his feet were starting to cramp. They weren't to far out of the city, it would take a couple hours to get back though. He'd manage.
