Peem laughed, rolling his eyes as he grabbed the penny. "...can't read on the job, but there are things called breaks. And reading always opens the mind; even if it's a pretty sore excuse for a news paper." He put up a hand quickly. "Not sayin' you don't have an open, educated mind. Sometimes I should just keep my mouth shut. But thanks for the penny."

"...can't read on the job, but there are things called breaks."
John chuckled. "Not on this job, friend. I'd give my left hand for a daily break..." Well, he thought while he suppressed a grin, what was left of it. Not to say there wasn't most of it left, but he did have half a finger less than most people. He had his riding gloves on and his hands on the reigns, so it was difficult for anyone to notice. He didn't bring attention to it. It wasn't important, anyway.
"And reading always opens the mind; even if it's a pretty sore excuse for a news paper."
The officer scoffed in laughter. He was pretty mouthy about his paper, for a newsie. Weren't they supposed to be loyal to their paper? But what did he know...
He put up a hand quickly. "Not sayin' you don't have an open, educated mind. Sometimes I should just keep my mouth shut. But thanks for the penny."
"That, I'll take as a compliment," he said with a grin. He shook his head at the young man. "No trouble, friend. I'd take a paper if I could. But like you said...it's a sore excuse. I prefer the Times..."

"Not on this job, friend. I'd give my left hand for a daily break..."
"Not many breaks on this job either, mate." Peem chuckled. "Figure I need to find a new one, but jobs are hard to come by, these days. But you have some good job security, I suppose."
"No trouble, friend. I'd take a paper if I could. But like you said...it's a sore excuse. I prefer the Times..."
Peem nodded, handing over the paper. "It's a livin'. Got to do what yah got to do, these days. And it's an honest one at that." He ran a hand through his hair. "Despite the common thought, not all of us newsies are thieves in our spare time."

~New~
Street walked along the path, lost in her own thoughts and keeping an eye out for anybody that was finely dressed. She was hungry and she wanted dinner, which meant she needed money, which meant she needed to pick a fine gentlemen's pocket. She whistled a tune she had heard at the Vaudeville the night before-which was coincidentally where she spent all her money.
Street's navy skirt brushed against the ground as she bent down to pick up a pebble. The pebble was green, actually green. Street figured this was fate, she was looking for a sign and what was better then a green pebble-green meaning luck. Perhaps something interesting was going to happen that day!
She straightened up and sat on a rock, watching the few people pass by every once in a while. There weren't a lot of people today...
