Lexi nodded when Pallet responded and turned, walking from the room and heading up the stairs. Running a hand through her hair, she heaved a sigh. Why had they come here? She shouldn't have brought her brothers with her. No one was after them. They would be safe if she hadn't screwed up and made them come with her. She knew Reid had refrained from saying it on the walk back to the Bronx but it was written all over his face.

"I'm your best friend. You can tell me anything; you know that..."
Pallet tried to look away from Byron but he wouldn't let her. She rolled her eyes, "Yes, you ARE my best friend. That's WHY I can't tell you." Pallet was getting so tired of keeping her feelings from him but she didn't want any awkwardness between the two of them.

"Yes, you ARE my best friend. That's WHY I can't tell you."
"I don't understand..." Byron watched her facial expression turn from nervous to frustrated. What would she not be able to tell him BECAUSE they were friends...? Then it hit him. Was it the same thing he couldn't tell her...? Well, there was only one way to find out and if it wasn't... well, he'd figure that out later. Byron turned his body so he was facing her, then he leaned in and planted a soft kiss on her lips. Then, he put a bit of distance between them and waited for her reaction.

then he leaned in and planted a soft kiss on her lips.
When Byron pulled away, Pallet sat there in shock for a few minutes. Had that really just happened? Pallet looked at Byron. He just sat there watching her, waiting for a reaction of some kind. Pallet tucked a strand of hair behind her ear and nervously cleared her throat , "Um... I better go check on Shamrock." She started to stand up but Byron grabbed her hand.

"Um... I better go check on Shamrock."
Byron grabbed her hand before she could leave. Then, he shook his head and chuckled a little. "No, Ashleigh, Luv. We need to talk about this." Pallet sat back down but wouldn't look at him. He took her by the chin and turned her head so she would look at him, "Ash, look at me... Please say something... Your silence has me un-bloody-hinged, over here."

"Ash, look at me... Please say something... Your silence has me un-bloody-hinged, over here."
Pallet finally looked him in the eye and sighed, finally giving up hiding, "What am I supposed to say, Jackson? That for the past few weeks I've realized that I love you as more than a friend, that I've only ever dreamed that you would kiss me, and that I've been too scared to tell you because of our friendship...? Fine, I've said it." She folded her hands in her lap, as a single tear began to slide down her cheek.

Byron smiled and placed his hands on both sides of her face, brushing the tear off with his thumb. "Ashleigh... I feel the same way... I love you too... Have for years..." Then he leaned in and kissed her deeper than the first time.

This time, Pallet wasn't surprised when Byron kissed her. She put her arms around him and kissed him back. When they broke the kiss, Pallet smiled at Byron and hugged him before leaning back on the couch and laying her head on his shoulder.

Byron smiled back at Pallet. Then, he laid his left arm on the back of the couch behind Pallet, held her right hand in his, and kissed her on the top of her head. Byron was so happy; this was how things were supposed to be between them...

((NEW DAY))
Prince had let herself into the Bronx lodging house. She didn't mind visiting friends on occasion, and with her new disguise in place she felt she had a whole new freedom on the streets of New York. Imagine, the ability to take off a hat without announcing to the world that you're a girl! It was a new and glorious thing to her.
However, Prince wasn't in the Bronx just for kicks or to visit a friend, she was here on leaders business with Dodger. Prince had been speaking to Smalls of Brooklyn, and it seemed most of New York had missing kids somewhere or other. Chances were good, she figured, that it wasn't just Newsies either. Work house kids, kids who worked in shops, maybe even some with families... who are now assumed run aways. She couldn't think of those kids... where ever they were, collectively lost and held captive.
She took a deep breath and got her mind back on track. Business. Right. Meeting. Dodger. Dodger? "Dodger!" she called. She didn't know where she'd be likely to find him, or if he was even home, but it seemed like a logical place to begin a search for a leader was their lodging house. "Dodger ya home?!" she tried calling out to him again.

Dodger had been woken up by a crazy Brooks kid and Lucky and now this, he grumbled as he made his way down the stairs. "What ya be shoutin' bout Princess.." he was grumbling and there were none of his kids around to notice the nickname.

Prince sighed annoyed at the nickname, but didn't retaliate as always. Dodger, the one and only who could get away with calling her that. "Sorry," sh said with a cock to her eyebrow, "didn't realize I was interruptin' your beauty sleep," she said teasing him. "Goodness knows you need it..." she glanced over at the window before looking back at him.
"Meetin' tonight?" she half offered, half suggested. "We... uh... thought we'd talk tonight, usual place..." she said quietly. "We need to figure things out. I talked to Smalls... sounds like kids have gone misplaced all over the city. She went to go tell Jack, and I said I'd swing by here and talk ta you on my way home." She folded her arms. "We thought, keep a tougher kid back home, tell kids to stay in groups... stuff like that. And we'll see ya tonight. Mmkay?" she said with a small smile. It didn't give her satisfaction to tell Dodger what to do, she was just happy that she was, for once, the one spreading the news of a plan, rather than being one informed of it.

He had to stare at her for a minute before he nodded and scratched his head, "I'll have left hold down the fort, I'll head out now.." he was never going to get sleep again, he was sure of it. "An don't make the bossin' me round a habit Mary Anne. I love ya like a sister but I'm not above given ya noogies ta make a point, aye?" he walked down the steps and tipped off her hat, catching it in his other hand and ruffling her hair before he tossed the hat in the air towards her, still heading for the door. "I'll go find Lefty and meet you at the meetin.." with that he was gone, muttering to himself.
