Piper fed the horse carefully, seeing the horse eat the carrot in a face pace. She smiled and stroked her neck.
"The name fits her perfectly." Piper said aloud, moving some of her her own red hair from her eyes and smiling. She loved looking at horses, it placed her in peace and comfort.

"The name fits her perfectly."
Steve nodded, smiling shyly. "Yeah, that's what I thought when I first started calling her that. Her real name's probably some fancy european name, her Jockey's french."
Steve knew probably every knook and cranny, every horse, every Jockey, everything about the tracks, he had been working here for two or three years.

Piper giggled and looked back at the boy.
"If her name is croussant then it does not fit at all." Piper replied in a laugh as she eyed him tilting her head to the side again, a habit she's always done.
"I didn't catch your name, my name is Piper." Piper said aloud to him in her scottish accent, one of her hands still on Swirly's neck.

"If her name is croussant then it does not fit at all."
Steve laughed and shook his head, before looking back at Piper as she looked at him. Gosh, she's pretty He thought this and shook his head, No don't be a fumbling idiot, you ain't got a chance
I didn't catch your name, my name is Piper."
Steve hooked his thumbs in his old worn and torn suspenders and a small shy smile tugged at the corners of his lips at her scottish accent.
"Steve," He told her, resting a hand on Swirl's mane, stroking it gently. "Shoulda known you was scottish from that red hair." He remarked quietly, smiling slightly.

"Most people think of me as a Irish lass, but I'm all Scottish." Piper replied aloud in a grin looked back at the horse for a moment. She could feel the warm heat of the horse underneath her fingertips, making her feeling content inside.
"So, Steve, you live here in Brooklyn?" Piper asked in a curious tone.

"Most people think of me as a Irish lass, but I'm all Scottish.
"Well, my father was a Scott, I know it well, I'm not Scottish though, born here in Merica'." Steve replied, surprised he told her anything about his father. He never talked about his past to anybody, well, maybe Swirl.
"So, Steve, you live here in Brooklyn?
"Yeah, in some dump of a boarding house, but its okay, I can't afford an apartment, and the boarding house is close to Sheepshead so its alright. I'm not used to anything fancy or neatly kept anyhow. What bout you?" Steve asked, noting the ink on her hands, she was a newsie, he knew that now.

"I'm a Manhattan native. I joined up on the Newsie business when I was little, it was either that or school and my brotha couldn't afford it ya know? So i became a newsie and I've been one ever since." PIper replied in a airy tone, looking at Steve with a grin and her fingers still grazing over Swirly's mane and neck.

Steve nodded, "Yeah, you do what you gotta do. You got a brother? That's interesting, most streetkids are all alone, seperate from all their family and all. I never had any siblings. I'm kinda glad, have a hard enough time taking care of myself sometimes..."

''I'm kinda glad, have a hard enough time taking care of myself sometimes..." Piper heard that and nodded in agreement. She hardly saw her brother anyways, he had to work on the docks and the time they had together was either running from the cops or finding food, it wasn't a pleasant relationship, but a relationship all the same.
"I hardly see the boyle anywho, but I know he's okay out there in the docks and all." Piper explained to him.

"I hardly see the boyle anywho, but I know he's okay out there in the docks and all."
Steve nodded in understanding, itching at a mosquito bite on his neck and sighing. He smiled when Swirl let out a little whinny and nudged Piper.
"She likes ya," Steve said with a kind smile. He liked Piper, he didn't like much people, but he liked Piper.

Piper giggled as Swirly nudged her and whined. She took one her last carrot and fed it to her, watching her eat it in a hungry state. She smiled and looked back at Steve. He seemed like a alright guy, though some boys she knew in the past were only after one thing, and that was it! It made her have trust issues beyond belief, but she knew how to handle herself now.
"Well I like her too, she's a alright hoarse." Piper replied as she pushed her red hair out of her eyes.

Steve nodded, "Well, she's a special horse. Can tell her anything really and she'll show you what she thinks. I've been teaching her how to count." Steve smirked, he pulled a sugar cube out of his pocket, knowing compared to carrots, sugar cubes were a sin in the jockey life, but Swirl deserved it, she was hungry.
He held up two fingers. "Two Swirl." The horse snorted and after a moment, lifted up its hoof, bringing it down twice. Steve grinned and gave her the sugar cube. "Good girl."

Piper smiled from her trick and gave Steve a small clap.
"Well done good sir." Piper replied in her fake british accent. She liked to have a british accent to fool people who really thought she was from england, it made her laugh thinking about it.

"Well done good sir."
Steve chuckled lightly at her accent, smiling. "I bet you entertain your customers too while they buy your papers. Let's see um...can you do French? One of the other stable boys here bragged to me constantly, he said he got his girls by speaking the language of loooveee to them." Steve smirked and moved to collect a bridle and saddle to prepare one of the horses for the upcoming race.

"I can do some French, German, a wee bit of Asian on a good day and Australian. I learned about these languages from being around the streets of Manhattan and the Bronx, interesting people they are." Piper asked as she looked at Steve getting a horse ready for a race.
"Most newsies would do anything to get a penny for a pape." Piper replied aloud in a shrug as she looked back at Swirly.
