Steve smirked, "Ain't that somethin...I guess selling papers is more big business than I thought."
The horse he was saddling was a big stubborn black. He protested and shakes his head, stomping his feet, prancing away from the bridle. Steve reached over the stall door and grabbed the horse by the ear, pulling it back over.
"Ah just shut yer trap and quit complaining already, Danger." He told the horse, finally getting the bridle over its head.

Piper watched as the horse struggled with Steve and she looked at him with some concern. Horses, though beautiful and calm at times, can also be dangerous and harmful to people. Though Steve looked like he knew he was doing, Piper wanted to make sure he was okay.
"Do ya need help?" Piper asked in concern and curiosity.

"Do ya need help?"
Steve shook his head, strapping the bridle, which Danger gave quite a snort to. "It's alright, he's always like this. He won't buck unless he's really angry. He just don't like getting uniformed and all."
He hopped into the stall to put the saddle on, whistling a tune which made Danger seem to calm down. Steve poked his head out of the stall and gave Piper a rare grin.
"One day I was working on a hot day like this, and Danger threw a fit. I was working on fixing up some equipment and started whistling this tune see? and wonders of all wonders, Danger stops his stomping and all and just stands there staring at me. He may be a stallion, and an unbreakable one at that, but he sure likes dance hall tunes."

Piper smiled and looked at Danger.
"I bet he knows Medda tunes as well eh?" Piper asked in a curious tone. Medda's songs always made her smiled whenever she was in a runt or sad at times.

"I bet he knows Medda tunes as well eh?"
"Yeah, he probably does," Steve smiled slightly and turned to getting the saddle on the finally standing still horse, who just let out little angry snorts every once in awhile. Steve annoyedly swatted at a fly buzzing in his face before finishing up Danger and walking back over to Swirl and Piper.
"You seem to really like horses...the truth is, if I had known I was going to be working in stables, I would think I was going crazy. But I tried selling newspapers when I was younger, my manner's weren't good enough and I don't got much of an imagination. I couldn't do factory work cuz at the time all the spots were filled and stuff, and...I'll admit it, I was kinda scared to work in a factory anyways, I heard about fingers getting chopped off. It turned out the only dang place I fit in with was horses!"
Steve shook his head, smirking. It was funny how lives never played out how they were expected to.

Piper smiled from him explaining how he got his job at the stables.
"I had two options myself: Newsie or school. For one I was almost kicked out for lighting my classroom on fire when I was around 7, all I saw was a match and then the next thing you know I lit it on fire! Well since that incident I've been a newsie." Piper explained as she looked over at Steve with a glint in her eye.

"Wow, seven years, that's a long time. I've only been working the stables a few years or so. Other than that I grew up in some stupid orphanage, guess I was dumb enough to be caught all by myself on the streets. Then wandered until I could find something I was good at." Steve shrugged, in the halfhearted way he always did. He was already pretty laid back, he didn't make a big deal out of anything.
"I guess you like fire huh? Makes sense, your hair's the color of fire."

"I can't help but be memorized by fire. Put me in a room with lighters and I'm in heaven, I don't know why but fire calms me down." Piper replied in a grin as she looked at the lighter in her hand. She loved the metal against her calloused fingers, and the feeling of warmth when was flame was ignited.

"I can't help but be memorized by fire. Put me in a room with lighters and I'm in heaven, I don't know why but fire calms me down."
Steve nodded thoughtfully. He didn't have any vibe, anything that calmed him. He did like working, it kept his mind off things, and he felt important somehow when he worked, even if it was just picking up after horses. He felt useful. But he didn't have book smarts, he couldn't sing or do anything musical, he had no artistic talent, Steve was just well...Steve.
He studied Piper. She was interesting, her red hair was fiery, probably like her unseen temper. But she was peaceful at the same time, and she'd given the time of day to talk to a stitch of a stable hand hadn't she? She had an imagination, she had charm. He wished he could say the same.

"So do you like working here? I know some guys who used to work at stables and quit because it wasn't their type of thing." Piper said aloud as she walked around to the other-side of Swirly, gently stroking her mane.

"So do you like working here? I know some guys who used to work at stables and quit because it wasn't their type of thing."
"I like it okay I guess. Don't really matter if I like it or not. I work and I get paid, and that's all I can ask for. It's not like I'm really good with horses either, but I knows what I'm doing. I dunno, there's just nothing else I've ever done okay at...like a one trick pony," Steve added softly. That's what he was, a one trick pony. His accomplishment was surviving.
He gave her a shy smile and patted Swirl, "What about you? I mean, you seem interesting, real good at impressions, you think you would be doing something else if you could? Besides being a newsie?"

"Maybe travel the world, go back to Europe and find my roots. I mean, I love New York with al my heart, heck New York is my heart, but I still wanna see what's out there beyond New York, even America." Piper said aloud as she felt Swirly nuzzle her nose into her palm and she giggled.

Steve nodded, surprised. "Man, you dream big." He didn't mean to make it sound like a bad thing so he added, "b-but that's a good thing. Traveling's good. Makes ya perienced'. At least that's what I heard. Maybe some super genius some day will find out a way to fly or something like that. Crazy to think bout though...ever hear of the guy that jumped off the Brooklyn Bridge? Was some professor, smart right? Survived the fall, died a week later. Dreaming of something better is a good thing I guess."
Steve shrugged, he had never dreamed more than finding a job, he didn't dream, he didn't want to face failure, he didn't want to be the fool when nothing he wanted turned out for him. He figured it was best to think nothing, and be surprised.

"I remember that, I saw in the papers couple of days after he jumped. Then after he died it was in the papers again, I feel bad for that guy." Piper replied as she looked up at the ceiling with a cocked look in her eye.

Steve nodded before shrugging, "Yeah, I guess. But if it was fame he wanted, he sure got it."
Steve peered out the door to make sure his boss wasn't anywhere around, and walked back over.
