Zoo walked out onto the balcony in the empty theater. It was practically deserted, minus a few girls going through an audition for an upcoming show. She was still in her day clothes, and was holding a daffodil plucked from outside the theater. She wanted to practice a few notes for her performance tonight, but knew it would be rude. Instead, she smiled down at the girls and listened intently.

Rex muttered under his breath, gripping the reigns of the rig as his buggy swayed as it clip clopped down the street. One eye was fixed on the busy Manhattan streets, the other sneaking annoyed glances at his customers he was being paid to drive. It was a young couple, who didn't seem to notice the jerking of the buggy as their lips were locked in a kiss. He had caught some of their conversation and he had a feeling they were newly engaged. He was bringing them to a shop on Broome street, and knowing the street, he knew it was some high class store. She was probably picking out her wedding dress. He pulled to a stop and cleared his throat. They finally broke out of their lovey dovey daze to notice they had arrived. He watched them get out and muttered, "Yeah get out and get a room." He watched them bounce into the store and sighed, leaning back. He knew he had to stick around to bring them back to wherever they came from. It was an unpleasently hot day, and Rex had a feeling there might be heat storms approaching, he sighed and brushed his arm againt his forehead before sighing. He watched the raven black horse that was harnessed to the buggy, flick its tail at a fly and stomp his feet, letting out a snort of complaint. "Yer right, King, its as hot as heck out here. Sorry, I would unharness you and find you some shade if I could," He told the horse. He sighed and it seemed the minutes seemed to drag by in the lazy tiring heat. Making up his mind, Rex climbed out of the buggy and stretched his legs, telling King to stay put, he wandered the street slightly. He knew it would be hours before the princess in the store would decide which dress to choose. There was only one thing on Rex's mind, getting out of the heat. Spotting a large building, Irving Hall, he shrugged and pushed through the door. It was cooler inside, even though the place was pretty quiet. Rex had never been in Irving Hall before. It was a nice place, interesting, you could just feel the vibe of vaudeville. Seeing some stairs, Rex took them, he had no clue where he was going and just hoped he wasn't going anywhere he wasn't supposed to. He found himself on what seemed to be a balcony on the side of the theater. He wasn't alone either. on the edge of the balcony stood a girl with dirty blonde hair, and was holding a flower in her hand. She seemed to be listening to the singing that drifted from down below. Rex didn't want to startle her or anything, so he just said a soft, "Hi," to acknowledge his presence. (Ya, long post, I do that sometimes haha, just ignore that, was in the writing mood I guess Had to change his name, hope it don't confuse you, apparently, T-Rexes weren't discovered yet in 1899 )

Zoo heard the voice behind her and held still for a moment, hoping she hadn't jumped. She'd been listening to two girls do a duet and had been very drawn into it. She turned on her elbow to look back at the boy behind her. She smiled and beckoned him over to the edge of the balcony. She slid the flower into her hair and spoke quietly. "You drive a carriage around the city, don't you?"

"You drive a carriage around the city, don't you?"
He smiled and nodded, surprised she would notice him among any other people in the city. He flashed a wide grin at her.
"Well, not quite a carriage, my rig ain't that fancy, but a buggy yes. Me and King have our own little business going, " He realized she didn't know who King was so he quickly added, "Oh, uh King's the horse that pulls it."

She smiled and laughed a little, quieting herself quickly. "No, I don't suppose you'd have a member of a monarchy pulling your buggy around for you. Have to be a bloody nice king." Zoo looked at him and noticed his rather nice brow sprinkled with sweat. She reached under her skirt and pulled out a fan just at her knee. She flicked her wrist to open it, and handed it to him. "You look terribly hot."

"No, I don't suppose you'd have a member of a monarchy pulling your buggy around for you. Have to be a bloody nice king."
He laughed as well, quite loudly and quickly clamped a hand to his mouth, blushing slightly as the girls down below looked up at them sternly. He then flashed the girl a grin again, his blue eyes twinkling cheerily.
"You look terribly hot."
He gingerly took the fan from her and looked at it from all angles, hanging it upside down for a minute, his brow quirked. Boys don't use these things...he thought and then handed it back to her.
"It's okay, It's much cooler in here." He took out his old handkerchief and wiped his forehead off, and he already felt much cooler.

She quieted her laugh as best she could as he held the fan like it was an piece of furniture from a foreign country. As she laughed she noticed a straggly looking man with a monocle and thin hair look up at them and whisper to his associate. As he handed it back to her, she grinned and rolled her eyes. "Boys." She kept the fan out and made broad strokes with it, trying to angle it toward him without making it obvious. She held out her hand. "I'm Zoo. And my bet is you have a name other than the owner of the King." She cut the option of a handshake short when she put both hands behind herself and goofily bowed.

"I'm Zoo. And my bet is you have a name other than the owner of the King.
Rex grinned again and laughed, shaking his head. "I hope not, than my horse would be getting more credit than me! I'm Rex. Nice to meet you, Zoo," He said, that grin never leaving his sun tanned face.
He liked Zoo already, her mood was light and casual, making him feel instantly pretty comfortable. He liked to laugh, and apparently so did Zoo. He couldn't help but notice she was pretty too and he felt himself gaping dreamily at her and snapped out of it, turning to glance around.

"Pleased to make your acquaintance, Rex. I'd offer a smoke, but, technically, you're not to smoke in here. At least not while you can get caught."
She smiled at him. It was nice to meet a boy that wasn't all hoot-and-holler. Not that hoot-and-holler was bad, just not when it was always directed at...well...at the sense of being a girl.
"So, what brings you to Irving Hall, Rex? Trying to sneak behind stage to catch a glance at Medda?" She smiled as she spoke to make sure he knew she was playing.

"It's okay, I don't smoke anyways...my nan--grandma used to tell me it would make my voice all raspy and that it would burn a hole in my throat, I dunno."
"So, what brings you to Irving Hall, Rex? Trying to sneak behind stage to catch a glance at Medda?
"No, I've never been to Irving Hall ever before, nor do I know who medda is. I was just getting out of that blasted heat, I wish I could help King out and bring him with me but I had a feeling that horses aren't allowed in here..." He explained, putting his hands in his old trouser pockets and gazing down at the stage as he spoke, that adorable little grin just didn't seem to know how to fade.

Zoo leaned back on the balcony with her elbows and grinned at his grin. It was contagious. She liked that it was. Finally somebody she didn't have to work to make play with. She rather enjoyed that he took sentiment to what his grandmother had told him. Good for him, to listen to the older and wiser. She might have done the same had the chance been given.
"Why, you have to be the only boy in this city who doesn't know about Medda. She's only the best singer in the city, probably the whole state."

He grinned and shrugged, "Well, I guess I don't always hear that much, I never buy newspapers, I don't have enough patience to read most of the time, I gotta be out doing something instead. My boss says that I'm the jumpiest kid he's ever know, that I can't sit still for one dang minute at a time, I only pass by the theater sometimes, I've never been inside before."
"So why you here, huh? The place seems pretty deserted, you exploring too, Zoo?" He asked curiously, squinting at her through one eye and scratching at a mosquito bite on his neck.

She smiled a shy smile, a rare occurrence. "Well, I was here to see if I could do a little rehearsing, but uh, my plans were dashed by a few youngsters and their, ahem, superiors." She put her finger under her nose and above her lip and another finger in a circle under her eye and started peering around curiously, finally unable to hold her character and started to laugh.

"Well, I was here to see if I could do a little rehearsing, but uh, my plans were dashed by a few youngsters and their, ahem, superiors."
Rex laughed cheerfully at her imitation, she was just full of humor, and he felt he hadn't laughed so much in quite awhile. It was nice to meet somebody like this in hard times. His blue eyes widened in curiosity again.
"You're a singer? Do you perform here?" Rex asked, a look of awe on his sleek, slightly boyish face.
