Rose smiled hesitantly, "Thanks Jack, but you don't have to be paying for me. I'll pay ya back..." She looked down, suddenly enthralled by the table top and mumbled, "You know.. once business gets up..."

He smiled and nodded. "I understand..people haven't been convinced by me either lately."He looked away, a bit guilty for not telling them what was really wrong with his leg. Those bullies had gotten to him again.

Jack shook his head. "We help eachother here--this ain't charity. When you have a good dday next--just buy me a pretzel." He laughed good naturedly.

Rose sent a sympathetic look toward Crutchy. She grinned slightly and nodded at Jack's comment, "Sure thing, Cowboy."
Her eyes wandered through the restaurant for a moment, until she drifted back to Jack and Crutchy, "So, Jack, it's probably the last thing you want ta be talkin' about over lunch, but... What exactly are the Raconteurs?"

Crutchy automatically mad ea face at teh mention of Raconteurs...the thieves. Hmmph, he had had a run in with them before. His leg aws still feeling the consequences. But he wouldn't admit that. It wasn't his way. "All I know is they're nasty."He frowned, looking back at Jack and waited for his input.

Jack sighed. He just couldn't get away from it. "The Raconteurs are...a band of theives." He ran a hand through his chestnut hair, loooking out the window. "Been recruitin gets to do various sundry things. Kidnappin' and forcin' newsies to join them."
He looked back to Rose and Crutchy. "They offer money we can't. Theys persuasive."

Rose noticed a certain solemness about Jack at that moment, she wish she hadn't asked. She turned her head away from Jack and Crutchy, "Er, sorry, I was just-- I didn't mean--"
She looked back at Jack, trying to think of some way to change the mood of the conversation, "Ya don't have ta worry 'bout us leavin' ya," she said with a smile on her face, "if that's any consolation."

He nodded, a big grin on his face now. He knew Rose was trying to make Jack feel better and he might as well assure his old friend. "Same here. They'd have to drag me kickin' and screamin' before I do anything for some stinkin' thieves. I'm a Newsie. It's what I do."

Racetrack sauntered into Tibby's with a huge smirk on his face. He and Hawkeye had just come from the tracks and it was clear from his expression it went well. Seeing his friends he made his way over, taking a seat next to Rose. Before greeting everyone he paused, catching the solemn mood. "Hey, uh, everythin' alright heah?" he asked, leaning in closer with his arms on the table.

Jack smiled at Crutchy and Rose. "Thanks...glad to know I have my kids with me." He brightened even more when Race and Hawk came over. "Hey there...well isn't this just turin' into a party!" He raised an eyebrow at the two. "Have fun?"
He paused and shrugged goodnaturedly. "Things are fine. We're getting on to better subjects now." He was feeling better. Maybe things would be okay. He had to believe that. He had his kids...most hadn't strayed. The bad times would pass...and they'd get back on to havin' a good life.

She turned to Race and smirked, "Heya Race, have another sure thing at the track?"

"Yeah..I think we're gettin' too old to be kids, huh Rose?"He was still grinning and glad to see Racetrack. He hadn't seen him in ages it seemed. He always seemed to be betting something these days. "Hiya Race, what's new with you?"

Hawkeye followed Race over to the table, "Whaddaya hear, whaddaya say?" She greeted the others already seated. She extended her hand to the boy with the crutch, not having met him before, "Name's Hawkeye."
She looked over to Rose, "Hey, I haven't seen you in... forever. Where've ya been?"

Rose smirked at Crutchy's comment, "Ha, I suppose," she began to mumble, "not exactly what I was referring to, but sure."
Rose waved to Hawkeye, "Eh, I've been around, ya know here and there," she sighed, "how ya been?"

"Well hiya Hawkeye. I don't know how you hang around that Race all the time."He teased his friend and looked back at Race, almost daring him to do something about it. "and yeah I believe this is turnin' into a regular party."
