Scout sighed. "It was...well in Tulsa it was slip by class, like Socails or Socs, who were da rich dumbasses and thought they were betta...well everyone did. And then da Greasers, who wore jeans, t-shirts, and converse...da poor kids. They were looked down upon. Da Greasers got beat up if they walked alone..." She held up her amr and showed him her scare. She also pointed to the one on her face. "I got beat up bad a few times." She took a drag on her cigarette. "Da Socs got all the breaks; nice houses, and da fuzz dismissed them as doin' nothin' wrong and hung everythin' on Greasers." She took a breath. "It was good in a way and bad..."

Scout smiled at him. It's good that he wasn't full of himself like other leaders. She leaned back on the steps and looked out at the people who were walking by. "How'd ya get da name Cowboy?" She asked not looking at him.

Rivers walked slowly up to the lodging house. He was nervous, to say the least. What if they didn't want him? What if he was too young?
Just hurry up and stop worrying. A voice in the back of his mind barked.
With a mental nod, he cleared his throat. "C-Can I be... I mean... can I... be a newsie?"

When the young boy asked the question he sat up a bit more. "Shoire kid...whats ya name?"

"Rivers." He said quietly, looking up breifly at the older boy. One corner of his mouth moved up in a sort of smile.

Jack got down more on the other's level. "Well Rivers....I'm Jack Kelly..I'm the leader here." He spit in his hand and put it out for the other boy. "We'd be glad ta have ya."

Rivers eyed the spit-covered hand with disgust and confusion, but mimicked the older boy's actions and shook his hand. His smile grew wider. "Thanks!"

Scout nodded ta Jack. She then saw the other newsboy come up. She stood up and walked down to his level. She spit in his hand also and extended it towards the boy. "Ise Scout, nice ta meet ya Rivers." She smiled at him.

Rivers spit in his hand again and shook Scout's hand. He tried not to shudder. Why did they do that exactly? It was kind of disgusting... but, if that was how they did it, then he would try and get used to it.

Jack leaned back a bit. "So Rivahs...whats ya story?" The kid seemed young enough that he might talk. He always felt that he needed to watch out for the younger ones...
