She blinked when he set the cards in front of her and soft, almost whistful smile crossed her face. There were only a handful of people that would think to get her something like that. One of them had taught her to trick shuffle, the other was her sister practically. And then there was River.
Reaching over Lucky took the deck and lifted her eyes back, "These are a really nice deck, how did you afford em?"

River couldn't hold back the smile when he saw the look on her face when she saw what he had for her. He loved the fact that she appreciated it so much when he knew other girls would laugh and throw them in his face. One of the things that had always struck him as amazing about Lucky is that she truly enjoyed simple things and nothing made her happier then just being with friends and doing something fun. Well that and gambling, which is why he bought the cards in the first place. He shook his head at her question, "They're actually second hand and weren't real expensive. I had some extra money lying around and thought I'd put it good use putting a smile on that beautiful face." He winked and gave her a wicked grin before taking another drink from his beer.

She laughed and smiled at him, "Well ya got what you wanted then, River... they're great and second hand or not.. means a lot.." Hell Lucky'd never needed a lot in life, she'd done without. But when someone gave her something it was precious. Gifts were given at times and she was smiling as she shoved the cards into her pocket. "Thanks, River."

River gave her a small smile when she told him that they meant a lot to her. That's what he'd been hoping she would say, but he knew how the streets worked anytime anyone gave you anything you appreciated it. Only with her he knew she meant it because she was more honest than most people could ever dream of being. "Anytime, Lucky. So what did Conlon have to say when he got back?"

She sighed and leaned back a little, "He was livid when he got a look at me, he said pairs or he'd beat the hell out of all of us and that he's thinking about what to do next. Seems like the King of Brooklyn wants to go to war, I'm alright with that. I'd like to get my hands on the asshole that did this to me and rearrange his face and his insides.." there was a dark smirk on her face, yes, Lucky didn't like. Oh sure she used to, but after awhile she figured that the truth was a lot more interesting. And it meant more.
"But he snagged Birdie and then I made Zeke take me for a walk so I don't know what was said, that girl knows more about the boroughs then the mayor..."

"You aren't the only one," River muttered under his breath at Lucky's comment about getting her hands on the bastard who'd dared to touch her. He'd like to do more than just rearrange his face. In fact, what he'd like to was a lot more graphic than that. "Good to know Conlon hasn't changed much." Meaning he's fierce and protective when it comes to his newsies, especially those who have been there and are as loyal as Lucky is.
River laughed at her comment about Birdie, "That's the truth of the matter. When'd she get back in town?" It just seemed like everyone was picking the perfect time to show up again. Not that he was complaining they needed all the help he could get.

The corners of her lips quirked a bit, how is it that she was just now realizing how much she'd missed River being around? Just hearing his voice was making her feel better, it was stupid but his gift and just him being there helped. He'd come to see her, and now she knew it.
"She got back about the same time Conlon did, I don't ask her where she's been because she just stares at me and then walks away. Damn girl, it's annoying.."

River chuckled and took a swig from his beer, "Yeah I do remember you guys weren't the closest of friends. She is a little too secretive for my tastes, but I guess that's why she always fit better with Brooklyn than the Bronx." Well that and the fact that like every other Brooklyn-ite she would kill someone before leaving her leader for another. "You know when I first met her I thought she was mute, and then when I heard her talk I nearly fainted on the spot."

Lucky chuckled into her beer and took a drink, "From what I gather she's known Spot forever and there's a lot of trust there. She talks in riddles a lot but she's always straight with him. Guess as long as she's loyal to Brooklyn I can't complain."

"If the Bronx had someone like her I wouldn't be able to complain either." River had always thought it was a little eerie how Birdie seemed to know just about everything going on everywhere. He'd never minded the girl but Lucky was right she did talk in riddles and could come off as not having it all together but she always seemed to have vital information if you could understand it.

"You know we haven't hung out like this since before I started seein' Sneaks and I gave Dodger my papa's hat.." the hat Dodger wore had belong to Lucky but she'd given it to him when she'd decided that it was time to move on and grow up a bit. She finished off her beer and leaned back a little. "And well the Bronx has plenty.. no body like Brooks but eh, you manage.."

River smiled, thinking back on the times when they had been young and they had all hung out together. That was before they realized their responsibilities to their boroughs and before they'd grown up. Life had been so much simpler and easier to understand then. He almost envied the kids who lived their lives like that, but then again if he was young and immature like he had been he could very well have ended up being kidnapped. Though it was hard from him to understand only because even then he'd been very wary of others and his guards had never been let down except when he was around his friends. Laughing, River pulled out a cigarette and rolled it between his fingers. "Yes, we certainly do manage. Quite nicely at that."

She laughed and nudged him with her foot as she just relaxed for the first time in months, "God, I look around and we've all grown up. You know there's going to come a day when we're to old for this life.." she'd said the same things to Smalls awhile back. Because at times like this she often thought about it.
"What're you gonna do River. When we're all to old for this and have to survive another way?" hell were they even going to survive that long?

River smirked when Lucky began talking about getting older and having to grow up and move on away from the lodging house. When she asked him what he would do he took a moment to think about it. It had never really crossed his mind, though he supposed he'd have to start thinking about it now. That time was approaching quickly enough. "Dunno..guess I could always work the docks though I don't want to do that for the rest of my life. What about you? What will you do when you stop selling papes?"

"River I haven't sold a single paper in over a year, I work at a restaurant called Eidle Weiss. But.." she sighed and closed her eyes for a minute trying to think for a moment. "I want my own, my own something. I don't want to be dirt poor and starving forever.. and I kinda hate the idea of you workin the docks. People die there all the time.."
