River ran his hand through his hair and gave a sigh before lighting the cigarette that he'd been playing with for five minutes. Conversation like this called for a good cigarette and a deep gulp of beer which he did as soon as he took a drag. "Trust me when I say it's the last place I want to work, but works work in this city and anythings better than a factory." Of course if he really wanted to he could work for one of the local businesses. The butcher around the corner really liked him and was always asking if he was looking for a job but he just couldn't see himself trapped inside a building all day every day. "I didn't know you started working there, guess I'll have to come visit you now."

"I hated sellin' papers especially after I stopped pretendin to be a boy. Men thought I was offerin a consultation along with a paper and I had to beat up customers." she ran her hand threw her hair and smirked a little bit holding her hand out so she could get a drag off of his smoke. "I like workin there. Not the servin mind ya but I do love to cook more than most.."

Taking a drag of his cigarette he almost choked when Lucky said men thought she was offering more than just a paper when she was selling. "Poor souls...I'm sure you made them eat their words." He gave her a playful smile and took a drink of his beer. "Glad I never had to deal with that."

She laughed and took the smoke from his lips, pressing her own around it and taking a drag before she handed it back shrugging. "Well love, I couldn't have changed it if I'd thought too. Things are just that way, ya know?" She leaned back against the chair again and smiled. "Heh, if I couldn't handle men like that you'd think I was a sissy, River.."

River smirked, "Maybe not a sissy but definately Queens material." He laughed and shook his head slightly. God he'd missed times like this when things just felt easy and right. He loved laughing and talking with his friend like they didn't have a care in the world.

"Oy," she rolled her eyes and then chuckled, god she hated Queens. She'd lived there for a spell before Spot told her to pack her shit and move. That had been the best order of her life, and Boxer liked Brooklyn more as it was. And so did she. But she missed River being a bit closer, since now he was all the way across the city.
"If you ever call me Queens material I'll knock you into the middle of next week.." she was smiling though, hell she'd needed this. She'd forgotten she was banged up and bruised and was just letting loose for awhile.

River chuckled deeply, "I know, Lucks. Trust me I know." They both had had a similar temper growing up so he knew just what she was capable of when you annoyed her. River smiled thinking back on the many people who had taken a nice chilling swim in the east river because they had pushed the wrong button with him. "Wanna play a hand?" He nodded towards the deck of cards.

She watched him for a moment before she took out the deck and started shuffling, a talent she'd aquired from various people but the most important one was her father. She missed him still, even though she had grown she still missed how much he cared about her.
Reaching over she plucked the smoke from his lips and pressed it between hers, taking another drag as she delt out, letting out a slow sigh of smoke. "Why'd you stop coming around, Chris?"
For a lot of the newsies, giving out their real name was like offering up a part of them. A small part of them that they could always count as their own and that it belonged to no one else. Newsie, nicknames were a way to hide. And partially-- well a lot of them felt that their names were power.

*New Day*
Poet walked into the pub and headed toward the corner table looking over her shoulder making sure he was still there. She sat down and called one of the waitresses over,"can I get a scotch and a whiskey and whateva he wants,"she muttered as the waitress nodded. Poet looked up at Jason and smiled sweetly,"I'll pay but be reasonable,"she said to him as she looked down and out toward one of the windows as she twirled a strand of her hair with her finger. She was enjoying his company so far so she'd pay if it meant keeping him happy. She bit her lower lip out of pure habit as she waited for him to sit and for the waitress to go away.

"can I get a scotch and a whiskey and whateva he wants," "I'll pay but be reasonable,"
Jason took a seat across from Poet, and looked up at the waitress. She was familiar, she waited on him before. That's all he knew. He looked over at Poet, scowling when she said that she would pay. Jason shook his head, firmly. "No, I'm gonna pay for myself." He said, he had plenty of money for a drink..or two...or three. "I'll take a scotch." He told the waitress.

"No, I'm gonna pay for myself."
Poet shrugged and looked at him as she rested her head in the palm of her hand,"ya got yer pride ta uphold is dat it?"she teased. She knew that not many guys would let a girl pay and she didn't have a problem with it either way she just figured it was a nice gesture on her part. She sighed but her smile never faded as the waitress brought them their drinks. Poet looked down at the scotch and whiskey and waved her hand over the two glasses trying to decide which one she'd drink first, she was indecisive, hence why she ordered two in the first place. She asked the waitress for an empty glass and when the waitress returned with one before leaving her and Jason alone, Poet poured both glasses into the empty one, it was easier that way. She took a drink as she looked at him,"yer not the only one who can drink,"she said as she smiled and giggled abit.

"ya got yer pride ta uphold is dat it?"
Jason shook his head, "Nah. I just don't wanna make you go broke by paying for all my drinks." He said, smirking. The waitress came with their drinks, and he started drinking his scotch. He glanced up to Poet, who wasn't drinking yet. "Its okay, it ain't gonna hurt you." He said, chuckling.
"yer not the only one who can drink,"
His eyebrows raised as he watched her mix her drinks. Whiskey and scotch together didn't sound too good to him. He shook his head, "Yeah, but I got enough brains not to do that." Jason said, gesturing to her glass with his head. "I gotta get up tomorrow and make a living. I just need a buzz right now."

Poet shrugged as she set the glass down,"I do too, but this is prolly all I'll have anyway and 'sides I can hold my alcohol pretty well.....there's not much you can't handle after being through what I've been through, what most of us have been through..........."she muttered as she took another drink, she really didn't know if this was such a good idea, she hadn't been around anyone lately to talk to at least so she had forgotten how this would go, she knew in the back of her mind though that she was the honest flirtatious drinker. She looked into the brownish liquid in her glass before drinking some more and setting it down looking at him,"sorreh I'm prolly borin' the livin' hell outta ya aren't i?"she asked as she took another sip.

Jason raised one eyebrow, "A lot of people have had rough lives. Especially newsies." He twirled his glass around on the table, as he said that. "The most admirable people to me are the ones who don't let their past become their present or future, you know?"
"sorreh I'm prolly borin' the livin' hell outta ya aren't i?"
He shrugged, "Eh, not yet." He said with a teasing grin.

She giggle softly as she took another drink and eyed him as she did, he was rather good looking and she really hadn't paid much attention to that until now. She coughed slightly at the realization of her thought but managed to pull the glass away before she could drink anything that would end up being spat out. She coughed into her hand before taking in a breath and returning her lips to the glass. She really never paid attention to those things about people, but then again that was because she wasn't one to hang out with many people even though she was quite the social being. She swallowed and set the glass down again and put both hands around it as she sat up and looked at him again,"that's true.....we all have our problems, we all deal wit 'em and move on I guess,"she mummbled trying to stay focused on the conversation and not his looks.
