With a cold breeze coming off the water Smalls stuffed her hands in her pockets, resuming her place against the crates. "So what is it that you do Smokey? When ya not bummin' around the docks I mean." Ever since her somewhat melancholy discussion with Lucky about the future, her curiosity of other female's mode of income grew. She couldn't be a newsie forever, after all.

Smokey smirked as she folded her arms into her jacket. Brusquely she replied with neither shame nor pride, "I'm a con artist." She shrugged. "Othah than that my mothah doesn't want me workin' and neithah does my fathah. He gives us money every now and then, but just enough to get by."
What she failed to mention was that neither her mother nor her father were around to see if she was working or not. She just always respected both her parents enough to not go against their wishes whether they were there to see it or not. "Judgin' on ya concern with the docks I'm guessin' your a newsgirl."

Smalls wasn't phased in the slightest by the girl's occupation, and if anything was a little impressed. At her question she gave a nod, patting her pockets absently for another smoke. "May not be the easiest job but it shoah beats woikin' the factories."

"Yeah," Smokey nodded in agreement. In her opinion, working in the factories was at the very bottom. She wasn't saying the people were low. If anything, they had the most will power. They worked from dusk 'til dawn in dangerous conditions for very little money. "But I can't be doin' it forevah. Believe it or not it gets kinda old swindlin' folks."

Smalls shook her head and grinned as she lit another cigarette, flicking the match into the water. "That's always been my favorite part abou' sellin' papes actually." She never ceased to find scamming her customers to be exceedingly amusing. "What is it ya plan on doin' aftah ya swindlin' days 'er done?"

Smokey smirked. "You know I use to think the same thing? I guess I'm just gettin' oldah is all."
She wasn't completely heartless. One time, after her biggest con, she had made the mistake of looking the man in the eye and it were as if all of his problems were transfered to her. She felt so bad that she didn't con anyone for two whole days, which was really saying something. Eventually she got over it, but the man's face was imprinted in her mind. She never knew why it left such an impression on her. Maybe because he reminded her of her own father.
She shrugged, sighing a bit. "Hopefully helpin' my fathah in his business. No offensive to you, but Brooklyn aint exactly Lower East Side. What about you? You still gonna be peddlin' papes ten yeahs from now?"

"Ya right it aint, it's bettah." She smirked at the girl before looking back out at the water. "I don't exactly have a aftah-newsie plan yet." she paused and shrugged. "But at least I'm short enough ta get away with it for a while."
She glanced up at the sky and pushed herself from the crates, taking a step forward. "I gotta go sell da evenin' edition if I wanna eat tanight, you be careful comin' 'round heah alright?" She turned and began walking away, puffing out a cloud of smoke as she went.

{new Day}
nick made his way out to the docks, pulling out a cigarette and placing it in his mouth before lighting it. Taking a drag he plopped down at the end, a light breeze ruffling his unruly hair. His dark gaze moving over the water as the sunset washed color over it.

Shadow was sitting up on a crate, well above eye level gazing out at the water, and watching the boats sail in and out.
She was startled when she heard someone walking down the dock, and, craning her neck, she was able to see that it was a young man. She leaned over for a closer look, but the crate she was sitting on didn't like this sudden change in weight - It tipped, and then went crashing down to the dock - Shadow with it.
When she hit the hard dock, she felt her head bang into the crate, and things began to fade into black..

Gabbi was perched on one of the wooden crossbeams that supported the upper level of the dock, seated somewhat awkwardly in the sharp angle that the wood jutted out at. Her arse was killing her at this point and she had tomove, but that was a bigger, more difficult task than she might have thought.
Eventually she managed to squeeze herself out of the position, giving her arse a quick once-over with her hand as she flattened her skirt back over it, trying to rid herself of the crease and wrinkles. She saw a boy lighting a cigarette and made her way over to him, procuring her own half-smoked but presently unlit cigarette from the package that she had, which was about a quarter of the way full.
"Mind givin' me a--" she trailed off as she heard a great caterwaul of noise, a collection of noises that sounded like flesh and wood and a few other things that she couldn't exactly name.
"What da f---in' 'ell was dat?" She asked, not particularly concerned for the fallen thing's welfare, as she turned her shoulder to Nick--although she didn't exactly know him very well, she'd seen the boy around. In the lodging house and on the streets, primarily, but also in a few other places that evaded her memory.

Nick glanced up at the girl who was about to ask, that he assumed, for a light. She didnt get to finish though as they heard some noise behind them and he glanced over his shoulder to see a crate had fallen a girl with it. With a sigh he got up and walked oveer. 'hey.."he said, but he got no response, kneeling down by the girl he padded her cheek with his hand. "hey youse, wake up"He furrowed his brows cursing a bit in itailian. He then looked around finally he pulled the cloth hed used to carry some bread it in it and dunked it into the water, moving back over her he wrung it out over her face. "Wake up..." he demanded. He looked over at gabbi. "Well what the hell..'He said, "I dont know what to do"

Shadow started coming around when she felt water being poured onto her face. She was silent for a moment and then started coughing and sputtering. She sat up quickly, then grabbing her Head in pain she cursed under her breath and fell backward again.
"Oh..Dang..How da hell did that happen..?!" she asked, groaning and not even acknowledging the other people around her.

Gabbi looked to Nick as he panicked slightly over the girl's fall and state of unconcsciousness. For some reason she felt unaltered, mostly because people fell all the time around here, and no one usually bothered to help them.
But then she supposed that it was a girl and people felt compelled to help girls, sometimes, if they were pretty enough. Or if they guy thought he'd get something in return. Nick did seem genuinely concerned, however, and she was a bit surprised. Perhaps he just didn't want her to die on his watch, but Gabbi hardly anticipated the girl's death.
"I dont know what to do eiddah. Wait fer her to--" she paused again as the girl sat up brusquely, again cutting Gabbi off. "Problem solved I guess." She pasued for a few moments, "Er, uh, youse ok?" she asked, a bit awkawrdly.

"Er, uh, youse ok?"
For the first time, Shadow acknowledged the presence of the two people around her. She rubbed her head soothingly and sat up again, this time slowly.
"I don't know what jest happened...But yeah...I think I'll live..." Shadow said hoarsely. Why was she Hoarse? She didn't have a clue but she hated the way it made her voice sound.
"I'm Shadow." she said monotonously, not bothering to stick out her hand for either of them to shake. Why should she be polite? It's not like they just saved her or something. They were merely innocent bystanders.
