Gwennie, who had been eavesdropping unnoticed for quite awhile suddenly broke in to the older kids' conversation, "why do you guys wanna be big anyway, being a newsie is funnah den any job ya can get when ya're oldah. Den you just sit aroun' at a machine all day 'an wait foah da black lung ta catch up ta ya". "really"huffed the young girl you big kids nevah really 'tink about nothin' "

Fighter gave Gwennie a smile, "You're right, we don't." She laughed, Fighter always had a soft spot for kids. "But when you're oldah you have'ta start to t'ink 'bout those things. Life makes ya so enjoy bein' a kid" Fight didn't say anything to Joe about telling her she's older than him. She didn't know his age so she couldn't really.

"then why are all a ya always bragging about how old ya are" Gwennie replied, puzzled "If ya 'tink it's bettah ta be young, shouldn't ya brag about how young ya are?"

Fighter shrugged, "I wasn't 'xactly braggin' bout it, kid." She didn't want to grow up but since she couldn't stop it she might as well just deal with it. At least it was easier to find different places to work when your older, that don't include a factory.

"not now" protested Gwennie "but everybody it sometimes, I know, I listen to dem. Whenevah dey wanna get out on top in an argument 'an dey doan' got no real case dey just say 'well, I'm oldah, so I win' or somethin' along dose lines like dey 'tink dere bettah because of it. I had this one frien' who did dat awl da time 'cause she was ten 'an I was seven 'an ya know what happened ta her? She sick with black lung 'an died but not before she suffah'd foah months and months 'an could barely breathe 'an stahted coughin' up blood 'an..." she paused, thinking "well, anyway, I just 'tink dat everybody should just enjoy being young sometimes instead of always lookin' foahward ta bein' oldah, even big kids like you, 'cause nobody knows if dey evah will be any oldah"

"SOire kid" Joe said as he watched the interaction between Fighter and the kid a slight smile on his lips. "Maybe youse should try ta be youngah too seems ta me dat ya got an oldah head on yourse shoulders." Joe didnt mind being older, he could still sell papers and there were things that came with age that seemed like it fit him well. Wisdom and foresight just some of the things along with looks. He never had to worry about were he slept at night.

"hey!" retorted Gwennie in a harsh tone "I enjoy bein' a kid all dat I can. it's jus' dat sometines bad stuff happens 'an i can't foah a while. I can't jus' forget about bad 'tings right aftah dey happen 'an not 'tink about dem at awl 'cause den i'd have to forget all of my friend 'an family who 'ad sumthin' bad happen to dem 'an I doan wanna do dat 'cause dat'd be mean."

Fighter looked at Joe and smirked raising an eyebrow, then she turned back to Gwennie, "That's one of the nice things 'bout gettin' oldah. You realize that you don't need to t'ink 'bout the bad t'ings you just t'ink 'bout the good t'ings to remembah people you love. That's what I do anyways."

Fighter nodded, "When you get oldah it gets easiah." That wasn't necessarily true, but Fight had learned to block out a lot of thoughts about the bad things and to concentrate on the good. She had a roof over her head, money in her pocket, and some good friends and really that's all you needed.

"sure" replied Gwennie, somewhat unassuredly She stared at the ground for a moment before looking up at the older girl and asking, considerably more cheerfully "so, we been talkin' all dis time an' I nevah caught ya name so... what is it?"

Giving Gwennie a grin, she replied, "Fightah Mallory, you are?" Fighter thought the kid was cute, she kind of reminded her of a friend of hers from back in the day.

"My name's Gwendolyn, but you could call me Gwennie, evr'body does, well... evr'body who knows me anyway" she replied, smiling broadly. "Is ya name really fightah or is dat jus' what people call ya too? " she asked seeming enthralled with the possibility that the older girl really had such an odd name.
