"Hold that there and the bleeding should stop soon. We should get it properly cleaned up though with soap and water. Listen, I haven't eaten lunch yet and I really feel terrible about tripping you. Why don't I treat you to lunch to make up for it? What do you say?"
Pup's eyes widened and right on cue, his stomach let out a loud growl. His dark eyes brightened and he laughed slightly, that grin lighting his dirt smudged face again. He nodded his head, figuring his stomach answered for him.
"I'm Valerie, by the way."
"Me name's Stuart Dawkins," He said softly. "But they call me Pup." He always left off the last part of his name. The Seitz was silent.

Valerie laughed hearing the boy laugh, relieved he decided to accept her offer, in a way. Then she thought of another idea, and hoped he would go along with it. However she knew she had to go about things rather slowly with him.
She stood up and resisted the urge to hold his hand, "Alright, where would you like to eat, Pup? Anywhere at all..."

"Alright, where would you like to eat, Pup? Anywhere at all..."
He scratched his head and looked around, trying to decide. He remembered how many times he had passed the Corner Cafe and had thought how delicious the food looked.
"Corner Cafe." He said softly, smiling up at her.

"That sounds nice." She spoke sincerely and flashed another smile to him. Oh, he was rather darling.
"Now, I haven't been living here for very long, so I'm afraid I don't know where that is exactly... I don't know where much of anything is." She shrugged, "Could you walk us to the cafe, Pup?" She asked as if truly depending on him. Which, in truth, she was.

He nodded and reached out for her hand and took it in his. He started walking down a couple streets. He turned to look at her.
"I'm glad you're coming with me. The food always looks really good. They wouldn't let me in there and get anything though. They said they didn't waste table scraps on little street rats l-like me." He explained.

She smiled as he took her hand and she gave it a gentle squeeze. Her smile faded a bit growing concerned when he spoke of the owners not letting him in. How awful.
She shrugged, "Well, I suppose they think you can't afford to eat there. But that's not a very nice way of putting it." She smiled again, "But anytime you feel like eating there again, you come find me. I'll give you my address when we get there, alright?"

He nodded and said his agreement. "Okay." He led her down one more street and stopped. "This is it, Valerie."

She peered inside the glass window then smiled to him and reached out, opening the door, "Don't be shy, Pup. You can order anything you like, all right?"
Once inside she let go of his hand, but placed her hand on his shoulder, moving him a bit closer to her skirts, protectively, waiting for the waiter to greet them.

"Don't be shy, Pup. You can order anything you like, all right?"
He nodded, thinking those words sounded oh so wonderful. He was really hungry. He closed his eyes for a moment, taking in the delightful aroma. When he saw the tall waiter towering above them, Pup shied, clutching onto Valerie's skirt, trembling a little.

She looked to him a little surprised, but then understood his reaction. Obviously this waiter had scared him off before. Or Pup was just anxious of being turned away again.
Valerie flashed a bright smile, as if the child with her wasn't so obviously beneath her class, "I'd like a table for two, please."

"I'd like a table for two, please."
The waiter looked down at Pup, raising an eyebrow, only slight anger on his face. This little boy had come to his cafe more than once, begging for food, and he had had it. He didn't have food to waste on filthy streetrats like him who couldn't pay.
But nonetheless, he had to be polite and generous to his hoity toity customers. Not that he hated the streetrats, its just he hated it when they crowded up his cafe if they couldn't even pay.
He forced a wide smile at Valerie and shot one more little look at Pup before ushering them towards one of his best tables.
"Of course, madam. Anything for you." He seated them and then sauntered away to go yell at his bakers who weren't cooking fast enough.

She gave the waiter a smile and, holding Pup's hand, followed the waiter to a table. She sat down, and placed her parasol and purse at her feet, so no one would trip over it. She watched the waiter leave and then smiled, more genuinely to Pup and opened her menu.
"Anything you wish, Pup. Don't be shy."

"Anything you wish, Pup. Don't be shy."\
He nodded and picked up the menu, clutching it in his little grubby hands. He studied it, looking at all the food and trying to decide. It was a difficult decision. Everything looked good and Pup was hungry!
He decided to get some chicken noodle soup and a ham sandwhich, and a glass of milk. He told Valerie what he wanted and while they waited for the waiter to come, he played with the menu.
He giggled, reading the words upside down.

"And whatever you don't get this time, we can try again some other time." Valerie placed her menu down, watching him.
Originally she would have ordered something a little more sophisticated, but letting Pup order first when the waiter came, she changed her mind.
"Oh, Stuart, that sounds nice," She said, using his given name instead. It wouldn't really do to be seen calling him by such a nickname. But she wasn't even aware of it. "Make that two, please. And two orders of chocolate mousse for desert." She added, looking to Pup with a smile, then, "You do like chocolate, don't you?"
He probably didn't know what mousse was, but if he didn't like chocolate there was always Key lime pie or strawberry shortcake.

"You do like chocolate, don't you?"
Pup couldn't help but allow a wide grin to spread across his dirt smudged face, his eyes lighting up even more allowing a little twinkle in his eyes.
He nodded vigourously, still smiling. He hadn't had chocolate in ages!
He studied Valerie intently, thinking it was strange how nice she was for being rich. A person couldn't pretend to be this nice, could they? Pup hoped not. He hoped in his heart Valerie wasn't pretending.
It was just so strange for Pup, thinking back on it now, to be so deprived of all the priveledged he had once been accustomed to. Stuart had given up all those pleasantries and pleasures a while ago. Those things didn't mean anything when there was no love. He wasn't going to stay in a house where his Mother hated him, beating him everyday without his Father's knowledge. No, living in the streets was better than that any day.
