He smiled. "How do you play?" Melody didn't really have a lot to talk about since he was eating, and he was just a kid who nothing interesting happens in his life at all. Except meeting Lock and Solitaire. That was interesting, but no one knew that except for him.

She patted the rickety chair next to her. "C'mere and I'll show you." She fixed the cards so they were back in their starting positions, making sure they were shuffled. She flipped over the top card on each pile and showed him. "See, the cards are either black or red. I put them in order -- a black two would go on a red three, or a red four would go on a black five. Look, see this nine?" She pointed to the nine of clubs. "Where do you think this nine can go?" She glanced at the very end of the line of cards, where a red ten of diamonds lay idly.

Letting all the information soak in before he answered, he looked at all the cards laying on the table. This is what he got so far, the smallest number would go on the number one larger than it, and they had to be the opposite color. Nodding his head, he still had a question. "Do they have to be the same shape?" Being only 12, he didn't know what they were called in a group of four.

She shook her head. "No, not yet. That happens later." She smiled. She was glad he seemed to be getting it.

Smiling, he nodded his head, then looked at the black nine. Glancing around at all the cards, he grinned and pointed at the red ten. "Is it that one?" His big blue eyes looked up at her with wisdom, and he looked so cute at that moment.

Solitaire nodded. "Very good." She hoped it wasn't to forward, but she ruffled his hair like he was her little brother. "Now flip that one over," she pointed to the pile that the nine was on, "and see what you can do with that card."

Melody didn't mind that she ruffled his hair at all. He pictured her as an older sister too, but more as a motherly figure. Grinning, he flipped over the card and it was a red seven. Looking around, he didn't see any black eights. "What do I do now?"

She pointed to the biggest pile, placed a little off to the left. "You flip over the first one in that pile," she said. She waited for him to do it. "And you see what you can do with that card. And if you come across an ace, you put the ace here." She tapped a space above the line of cards.

Nodding his head, he flipped the card over. Coming across a black seven, he grinned, his teeth actually showing. No one has really even seen him teeth before, besides his family obviously. He only shows his teeth that way to certain people that are special. Taking the black six, he put it on top of the red seven. "Like that?"

"Yeah," she said, grinning. She saw his toothy smile and returned it, glad she could make the boy smile like that. It was unusual to see someone grinning so brightly, especially in hard times like this. "Now you flip the card again," she said, pointing to the pile at the top. She loved teaching.

Flipping the card over, he got a 10 of hearts. Melody bit his lip while he concentrated on finding a black Jack.Once he found it, at the end of the line of cards, he put it on top. Remembering what he was supposed to do after, he flipped the card on top over.It was a red two. Going over to the big pile, he flipped that card over and got a black ace. "Wow! This is fun"

"See? It's a thinking game." She grinned. "You're doing a great job so far. Now where does the black ace go?" She looked at him expectantly.

Licking his lips, he picked up the ace. He has seen cards before, and he didn't know if there was a one or not. He hasn't seen what yet, so he took a chance. Putting the black ace on the red two, he raised his eyebrow. "Does it go there?"

"No, not exactly..." She pointed to the space above the line of cards. "You would put the aces there. You start a whole new pile, and this is where you start putting the cards in order by color and shape." She took the ace and showed to him. "This is the ace of clubs. It looks like a clover from the park, right? So we'll just call them the ace of clovers, okay?" She put the ace in the space above the cards. "Is there any black twos that match the shape?"

Looking around, he had a slight frown on his face. Finally finding a two of clubs, his frown turned into a small grin. "Yeah. This is it, right?" Putting it on the ace, he smiled.
