A pleasant breeze was blowing in off the water, tugging and twirling the fabric hanging down from a large sun tent. In this comfortable shade was set up a dainty table with four chairs, all occupied by a beautiful young girl. Marie fanned herself and glanced out at the waves, the conversation quickly boring her. She instantly caught sight of her neighbor Evangeline, strolling down the beach and wearing a stunning hat. Excusing herself from the other girls Marie made her way over, holding up the front of her skirts as she went. "Evangeline! Oh Evangeline!" She waved a small hand as she made her way over, her breathing a bit heavy from the weight of her garments.

Evie blinked and looked over at Marie she let out a sigh, what was it now? She folded her arms across her chest, "What is it Marie?" her friend, no they were never friends, Evangeline had been convenient for Marie to talk to because they were neighbors they really weren't anything else.

Finally reaching her she stopped short, looking slightly taken aback and confused at the other girl's cold greeting. "I came to say hello, that's all.." Of course, the trip over through the sand hadn't exactly been a piece of cake, but she didn't want Evie to see that now. Avoiding the other's gaze she looked out at the water, her jaw tense and arms folded in front of her. There was so much she had wanted to tell her friend, about the man she'd met and walked home with, the man she couldn't tell any of her other friends about. She sighed inwardly, feeling slighted.

Evie blinked and looked at her for a long while, came to say hello? Had Marie hit her head? With a sigh Evie rolled her eyes heavenward and asked for patience. "You looked as if you had some news..." So did Evie-- she was going to get her brother arrested come the morrow.

She shrugged indifferently. "I'm sure I don't know what you mean." Shifting her hands to her hips and turned ever so slightly to face Evie. "Have you spoken with any street rats recently?" Her tone was very different than usual. There was no emphasis on the words 'street rats', and her haughty air was almost completely diminished. It was as if she had just asked how she liked the weather or if she would like to play croquet.

Evie got her back up when Marie opened her mouth and bristled, for some reason she thought of Jim on the bridge and snarled a little. Even though the pompousness was gone it was the word itself that she felt was demeaning and she shook her head. "That's incredibly presumptuous Marie... I haven't met a street rat... ever." The lower class were no better or worse than they were, everyone had a right to be treated like a person. "But I did meet an incorrigible man awhile ago.."

Marie sighed dramatically, wiping at various strands of hair that were blowing across her face. "Okay fine, an incorrigible man then, heaven's sake Evangeline you're so touchy." Her gaze turned back out to the water as she shrugged. "So... what was he like?"

Evie blinked, what was he like? She would never admit that it was that touchiness alone that had her speaking to the man at all. Where they actually speaking? No they'd been arguing, she sighed. "Bristled easily... aloof.." Irritating.

Marie thought quietly a moment, comparing the description with her observations of Corsair. She didn't remember him being anything like what Evie was portraying. "Hm, well, I met one that was nothing like that." Again, her tone seemed far to casual for the words she was speaking. Maire meeting anyone of the lower class was shocking to be sure, but she knew it wasn't something Evie would be impressed with, so she attempted to mirror her friend's laid back attitude toward street people.

"The one?" Evie lifted a brow at Marie and scanned her up and down, wondering what she had taken in that had caused her brain to maulfunction away from Marie's usual processing. "You met someone Marie?" Taking that oportunity that Marie was giving her to deflect the conversation away from Jim she was more than willing to take it.

Marie attempted to remain casual, not wanting Evangeline to see how excited she truly was about it. "The other day, a man walked me home, it was nothing really." At the time Marie had been horrified and humiliated, but as the days passed she found herself looking at faces through the street, wandering closer and closer to the low end neighborhoods, hoping perhaps she might catch sight of him again. Of course if she did she wasn't sure how she would react, but meeting him was just so.. exhilarating.

Evie raised a brow and looked at Marie in something akin to disbelief before she turned back towards the water. "It's not nothing if you look entirely to giddy, Marie. You look ready to burst in two with excitement.." that Bostonian accent of Evie's wasn't meant to be condescending. It was actually just blunt honesty, she was kind of-- what was the word? Proud, of Marie's change of tune. The man had to have been good looking though....

She snapped her head in Evie's direction, a small huff escaping her lips. "I most certainly am not!" Her arms again folded across her chest and she returned her gaze to the waves, her jaw clenched. She was not comfortable being so transparent. "He was dirty after all, and ill mannered, and... " She trailed off in her attempts to find faults with the man, and in her defensiveness seemed to regain part of her former self. "I'm just glad he didn't kill me!" She sighed, muttering something sounding like "horrid street people" under her breath.

Evangeline rolled her eyes, and shook her head in annoyance. "Marie the only advice I have is this-- even a man dressed in the finest is really a man that is either after your money or you-- money changes no one, it just makes what they really are easier to hide.." She snorted. "By the way--- Alistair is going to prison, the pinkertons are looking for him now--"

She looked over at Evie, her mouth hanging slightly agape. Her reaction quickly changed, however, and she was soon looking much like her former self as her eyes darkened and she looked her friend in the eye. "What have you done!?" she shouted at her, hands placed firmly on her hips. She always knew Evangeline was a bit, well different, but this? Locking up her own flesh and blood? And he was such an upstanding gentleman too!
