"Done what needs to be done," Evangeline replied easily. Her brother was no gentleman, he was just a petty thief wishing he could live off of his little sister's trust fund and Evie would have no more of it. He was a lout, a lay about and more or less worthless. "When they find him, and they will, he'll go to jail for a very long time.." And she was backing away slowly. "The wolf in sheep's clothing Marie, never forget that.."

Maire stood frozen, horrified by what she was hearing. She stepped back as well, unconsciously wanting to distance herself from Evie. "I can't believe you! I was starting to think that you were normal, but you're nothing but a spoiled conniving little brat!"

Evie gave her an appalled look. "Spoiled?! How dare you call ME spoiled miss high and mighty. It's always about you Marie, about how you see the world how you feel about it and about your blasted station!!" She'd had enough she threw her hands into the air and shook her head. "I'm done Marie, I'm done. Normal is outside your sphere of comprehension.." and with that she started to walk away-- she didn't know where she'd go but she had to go somewhere.

Marie glared at her retreating back, raising her chin in a haughty sneer. She had no reply to what Evangeline said, so she turned abruptly with a huff, making her way back to her like-minded shallow friends.

(( New Day ))
Lightning was running around, trying to get the steam off of him from the raise of the prices. He wizzed by people and was kicking up sand. When he was finally calm, he sat down in the sand and kicked off his socks and boots.
Still in the sand, he put his feet out to the water, layed down and closed his brown eyes.

Slip-shoe had decided to come and relax by the beach, to get the water to drown out the very loud complaints of her very empty stomach. She'd decided to skip lunch today. Well, she hadn't decided it as much as Pulitzer had. The price hikes were forcing all the Newsies to make sacrifices. Slip's happened to be her midday meal.
A boy stomping down by the water caught Slip's attention. From her spot he seemed quite troubled, and it appeared he was trying to beat the sand into submission. Curious, the newsgirl tromped down to investigate.
"Oi!" she called to the boy, who had given up his abuse of the beach and now sat looking out at the sea, "Are you all right?" Drawing closer, she found the boy was none other than Lightning, a fellow Bronx Newsie.
Slip began jogging, closing the space between them. Once there, she dropped down onto the sand, not very gracefully. "Hello Lightnin'!" She flashed him a grin and clapped him on the back. A moment later, though, she fixed him a puzzled look, and gestured to the sand around them. "What were you doing, before? You seemed, uh, troubled." Slip decided that 'troubled,' was a more polite way than saying he'd looked like a loon straight out of Bedlam.

When Slip-Shoe came running up to him, he sat up and looked at her. His feet were still wet, but he didn't care. "Heya Slip-Shoe, how's it rollin'?" He asked very tiredly. That ran really got the wind out of him.
Lightning rolled his eyes, but still smiled. "Ah, I was running, tryin' ta get my angah out at Pulitzer.." Wondering why Dodger won't strike, he asked, "Do ya know dat Dodger and Jack aren't strikin'? Only Prince and Spot are up ta it."

Slip bit her lip, contemplating how to answer. Leaning back on her elbows, she squinted over at the boy. "It rolls, I guess," she offered, shrugging her shoulders. Things weren't good, but they weren't as bad as they could. They just were.
"Ah, I was running, tryin' ta get my angah out at Pulitzer.."
The newsgirl nodded diplomatically at Lightning's explanation. All the Newsies were angry, and there were worse things one could do than mistreat some sand. However, when he began to talk of the strike, Slip straightened up, remembering their conversation in the Lodging house a few days ago. "He just wants to talk to the other leaders is all, feel out how it's going." Slip trusted Dodger completely, and sometimes she could get a bit over-enthusiastic. This was one of them.
"You shouldn't doubt him, you know. He's always looking out for us, always tryin' his hardest. Maybe he will yet, he'll let us know when he decides. And Jack, he's sort of an expert with this striking thing, he'd know what to do. Maybe we shouldn't strike this time..." Slip trailed off, fiddling with the hem of her skirt and staring out at the waves.
Yes, they'd won the first time, but they couldn't count on winning this time. After all, they couldn't bank on the Governor breezing through again. He was a politician. Shaking herself out of thoughts, she looked back to Lightning. "Just believe in 'em, Jack and Dodger, they'll see us through." Slip kicked at the sand with the toe of her boots. "They've got to," she said, frowning slightly.

"Just believe in 'em, Jack and Dodger, they'll see us through."
Lightning nodded sympathetically. "Ya, but I just feel bad foah my brotha, Magnet. He's taken care of me and Thunder since we was 5, and Wolf when he was 2. I just want him ta be happy."

Slip looked back toward her companion, smiling weakly. She knew what it was like to be cared for, and care for others. Both had their own pros and cons.
Still, Slip always tried to be optimistic. Always see the positive (and even if she didn't she'd pretend she did). "It'll be OK, Lightnin', and I'm sure your brother'll be OK too." She licked her thumb and rubbed the now sand-covered toes of her boots. "I think I may be off, try some coin tricks and get some pennies, y'know. Got to buy my papers."
She stood and stretched, brushing sand off her skirt. She lent down and laid a comforting hand on his shoulder. "Don't feel badly though, Lightnin'," She flashed him another bright grin, masking all of her own worries. "I've got the triplets to help out with, and I'm happy as could be."

Lightning smiled brightly. Slip-Shoe just made his worries all go away in just a few words. He smiled and stood up. Giving her a big hug, Lightning said, "Thanks Slip, yoah a great friend." Then he pulled away and smiled at her.

She beamed at Lightning as she teetered on the sand. "Don't mention it! We all look out for each other, that's the up side of being a Newsie!" Slip almost clapped him on the shoulder again, meaning she attempted to, but missed his shoulder and instead fell face first into the sand.
She quickly rolled onto her back and wiped some sand from her face. "Well, that was unexpected." Slip brushed her sand covered hands against her equally sand-coated skirt. "Not unusual, but unexpected."

As Slip fell into the sand, Lightning had to bite his bottom lip to keep from laughing, but that didn't work out so well. He started chuckling and smiling a little bit, but then walked over to her and held out a hand. "Heah," When he helped her up, he said, "I'm just wonderin', but wheah do ya gotta be at?"

With Lightning's help, Slip righted herself. She swiveled back forth a bit to get the sand off her skirt, and tried to shake it out of her hair. Still tossing her hair about her shoulders, she answered her companion. "Well, I haven't got to be anywhere. But I'm thinking of heading down to that shops, to do some coin tricks and such."
She sighed, it seemed her hair was determined to retain the sand, no matter how hard she shook it. Slip tied it back into a tight bun. "It's curious," she began, tapping a finger to her lips, trying to look thoughtful. "As of late, it seems I'm short on money." She grinned at Lightning, shoulders hunched up by her ears in a ridiculous impression of a shrug, "I simply can't imagine why that would be."

Lightning rolled his eyes, but smiled too. He chuckled a bit then said, "Alright, what stores do ya gotta go ta? 'Cause ya know, I don't got a lot of money meself."
This one moment, this one time, Lightning actually took the time to look at Slip-Shoe. She had beautiful brown hair, and pretty eyes. Her skin was smooth and tan. His breath was caught in his throat, and he had no idea why. Finally, he coughed and thought, how come I nevah noticed how beautiful she is until now?
