He held up his hands. "Okay, okay, doll, it's true. I was just kiddin' kiddo. I was just surprised ta see ya down here," he explained. "How you been kiddo? I ain't seen ya in a while... you've gotten prettier since the last time I saw ya," he said his charming smirk returning to his face without a second thought. He'd forgotten about the day with Z in the park where she had seen him... so he was clueless.

The 'prettier since the last time I saw you' remark went right past her. Any other day before the day in Pelham, she would have blushed and maybe giggled. She would've just fallen harder for him.
Shiner looked aghast, then furious. She felt her throat tighten but ordered herself not to cry. She clutched the newspaper in her hand tightly.
"Kiddo?" She swallowed hard, "That's all I am to you, isn't it?" If she cried, she'd only prove him right. "I'm not! I'm nearly seventeen! I'm not that much younger than you are, you know!"

"Woah! Woah!" he said a little caught off guard by the sudden burst of anger. "Look... I call everyone younger than me kiddo... even some people older than me!" he explained. "It's an expression... I dun mean no harm," he said. "Sorry," he added with a shrug. "What's gone wrong in your world Shiner?" he asked using her nick name. "What's got you so upset?" he asked.

"You!" She burst out before she could stop herself. So horrified with her confession, she sat down on the bench behind her and covering her face with her hand, the other one still gripping the paper tightly.
She took a deep breath, fisting her hand that began to tremble, looking down at the paper in her hand, "We've arrange to go out for a date twice. Things came up to prevent that from happening, which were entirely because of me. But I'm not sure that, now, I'm at all sorry about it." She spoke coolly, but her voice shook.

Avalanche was still clueless about anything he had done wrong, so when to his surprise he was the issue? He instantly felt awful. He sat down beside Shiner and put an arm around her shoulders. "Shiner," he said speaking quietly. "I'm so sorry... look... we can still go out you know?" he said. "Really, we can go right now, I'll buy ya dinner, we'll have a great time," he promised. "What'd I do wrong Shine? C'mon don't cry," he said rubbing her back. He didn't like to see people cry, it meant a deep sincere sadness, which no one should have to suffer through in his opinion.

She tensed as he put his arm around her, too stunned by his move to even know what to say. She didn't speak, or move, until he began rubbing her back. She bolted up, out of his grasp, she turned to face him, the paper still in her hand and held it so tight her knuckles were white. She looked as if she'd hit him with it at any moment. But she pointed to where she had been sitting instead, "How dare you! How dare you try to console me and... and touch me as if I were your fiance and not her."
The truth had finally reared it's ugly head and tears streamed down her face. "No, I don't want to go out anywhere with you." She threw her paper at his chest, but hardly at the force she really wanted, her tears becoming overwhelming now that she'd started, "I don't ever want to see you again!" She hugged her stomach.

Avalanche's eyes went wide. That was right... she was in the park that day! Oh no...
"I don't ever want to see you again!"
Avalanche jumped from his seat and threw his arms around her. "Shiner... you gotta listen to me... okay? It was a show, it was an act. She's for women's rights and stuff... so we were trying to get them to listen to her, and they wouldn't unless she seemed like she had a stable guy in her life who agreed or somethin'. Look..." he held up his left hand. "I ain't engaged, I ain't gettin' married... I ain't even got a steady girlfriend!" he said chuckling lightly. "It was all an act Shine... ya gotta believe me... C'mon pretty girl, what I gotta do to convince you?" he said trying to hug her still.

When he hugged her she all but yelled, crying and weakly beating his chest with her fists. She was being irrational, she knew it, not wanting to listen to him, afraid he was lying to her. She wanted to just be angry at him and find a way to make him sorry he ever flashed that damned smile of his at her. She wanted to yell at him and leave him before he could hurt and leave her.
But despite her best efforts she did hear him. And she had seen the girl speaking about women's rights before. She let Avalanche have his hug before pushing away from him and wiping her tears away before any onlookers got the wrong idea. However angry she wanted to be at Avalanche, she did not want to see him in jail.
But she still could be angry. She was obviously very upset, and he thought it was all a big joke. "Go away..."

Avalanche felt awful. He sighed deeply. "Okay..." he said quietly. "Just... know that I didn't mean any harm... I'm sorry Shine..." he said. "You can be angry as you want, you have every right to be, just don't cry okay?" He wanted to give her another hug he wanted to do so much, but... he didn't want to upset her further.
"If you ever wanna talk... I live in Brooklyn. Ask just about any newsie where I live and they'll probably be able to tell ya," he said. "I'll see ya around other than that I'm sure... I'm sorry Shiner..." he said as he turned to leave. He felt awful. He hadn't meant to hurt her, or anything... but he did. He hated when he made people sad, it made him sad.

She turned, glad he was leaving so she could sulk and be miserable in peace. So she wouldn't have to look at him, and have him try to console her, and apologize to her. So she wouldn't forgive him so quickly and make herself look like a fool.
However she did turn back to face him, after a thought entered her mind quickly, though he was leaving, "How did you know exactly what I was talking about?"

He stopped and looked over his shoulder. "I saw you there," he said quietly. "Well, she saw you," he explained. She pointed you out to me, and you were already running the other direction by the time I saw you... so it was too late to catch up to you. After that day I would have come to find you but... well ta be honest I forgot until you mentioned it just now. Not on purpose mind ya... I just did," he shrugged his shoulders. He stayed where he was, just in case she had any more questions.

She swallowed hard, wiping at her tears again, and sat down next to her papers on the bench behind her. If he'd forgotten about it, maybe it really wasn't anything. But he'd forgotten to find her and explain it. Maybe he didn't care. And she couldn't understand why she didn't want to believe him.
She force her tears to stop and thought she must have looked a right mess infront of him. How childish, indeed. She sniffled, "It didn't look like an act... I--" She stopped herself, not wanting to admit she had left the park crying and humiliated and had lied to her Uncle about tripping and hitting her knee on a lamppost.
"The way you held her..." She trailed off, tears threatening again, just when she had stopped him. "I know..." She took a deep breath but didn't make it past two words before the tears came again. Dammit, why couldn't she stop crying just for five minutes!

Avalanche stood still for a second and then turned around. "Look... Shiner..." he sighed and took a step towards her. "It was to help her sell her ideas. To prove a point," he sighed a little. "I'm sorry you got the wrong idea, and I'm even more sorry that your feelings were hurt by it," he said gently. He took a knee beside her, instead of sitting on the bench. "C'mon," he said, "don't cry," he said reaching to dry her eyes. "Gimme a smile, huh?"

Shiner sighed heavily, shaking her head, but couldn't muster a smile. "I'm sorry... It just... It looked..." She looked up, feeling him drying her eyes with his hand. She sniffled, "She's just a friend? You're really not engaged? To anyone?"

He laughed qui9etly. "No, I'm not really engaged. Shine, I dun even have a girlfriend," he said chuckling. Avalanche was a Peter Pan type... for him to be engaged was a far bigger deal, and if he were engaged the last thing he would ever do was lie about it. The truth was in his eyes. They showed that he meant no harm, that he was sorry, and he wanted her to stop crying, as did the small yet encouraging smile on his face.
