"<Yeah, i think i heard about that. I wasn't a newsie back then though so i wasn't really part of it.>" He looked across the street, watching the people that walked by. "<You think it could be those same guys taking kids this time?>" Styx took another drag then looked down when he felt something sniff his leg.
"<Sorry, you're not afraid of dogs, are you?>"
He grinned at the dog and sunk down to his knees to ruffle his ears. "<Nah, I love dogs. Me an Nike used to have a bunch when i lived in Ireland.>" He looked up at DA, still petting the dog. "<What's his name?>"

"Horseshoe," Don't Ask answered. "<He helps me here in the shop.>" Taking a last drag on his cig, he dropped the remaining bit to the ground and stamped it out with the toe of his boot. "<I dunno, could be the same people. Could be a whole new set. No telling yet. I heard a rumor outta Brooklyn that someone over there is pretty pissed off about it, and is lookin' for revenge. But I dunno if that's true, could just be more macho bullshit.>"
He turned to look into the forge again, then continued. "<I finished most of my jobs for the day, and I live here so I could get the rest of them done tonight. I could come with you to Irving Hall, maybe watch your back if you get a lead on your sis or something. You know, if you wanted.>"

“<I need to get me a dog,>” Styx remarked, standing up. He took another drag of his cig while he thought. It may be almost gone, but he was determined to get as much as he could out of it. “<Well it ain’t all that unusual for someone in Brooklyn to be pissed, Hell this whole situation has got me madder than I’ve been in years! But as much as Brooklyn talks macho, they usually have the guts and the power to back it up. If Brooklyn’s for us, there aren’t too many that can stand against us, right?>”
"<I finished most of my jobs for the day, and I live here so I could get the rest of them done tonight. I could come with you to Irving Hall, maybe watch your back if you get a lead on your sis or something. You know, if you wanted.>"
“Yeah, that’d be brilliant!” He replied, switching back to English. “It’ll be quare* to know someone’s got my back in times like these. Thanks, mucker*!” He grinned at DA, then stamped out his cig stub, “Horseshoe commin’ with?”
*Quare (n): contrary to popular belief this does not mean queer or strange but great! - it's irish irony Mucker (n): a friend i.e. someone you muck around with.

Don't Ask grinned and untied his rope belt, attaching one end to Horseshoe's bandanna-collar.
"Horseshoe always comes with."
(Aaaand now the plot moves to Irving Hall!)

[New Day]
David had papes tucked under his arm, but the truth was he was more monitoring Manhattan then anything else. This whole business with kids being snatch ha him on edge and he'd warned Les not to go anywhere without him or Jack or another Newsie. Plans were under way, more things to make him nervous, but David also knew he'd do whatever he had to do to save his friends. He had family, sure, but the Newsies were his other family and that meant something.
Shoving a hand in his pocket, he whistled to himself as he walked, keeping an eye for any lone Newsies.

Benjamin had been told by his father he wasn't allowed to sell papers today. Instead, he was to come along with his father, mother, and older sister Nira to the shops near the harbor so Nira could pick out the fabric for her wedding dress. Nira was being picky, Mother was fawning over her, Father was mumbling to the dressmaker about price, and Benjamin excused himself to outside the shop. The whole display was making him extremely bored. He stood near the door and looked around at the nearby ships. From his pocket he pulled out his cornet mouthpiece and blew into it gently. The sound made a passing woman jump, and she shot him a reproachful glare. Benjamin cowered apologetically until she passed.
He looked down the row of shops each way, and saw a newsie with papers under his arm. "David?" he called out uncertainly.

David turned at the sound of his name, looking for the somewhat timid voice that had called out. He spotted a familiar looking Newsie leaning against the side of one of the buildings and worked his way over, searching for his name in his mind, running through his and Jack's crew as quickly as he could. "Benjamin!" He said finally, landing on the name and hurrying over. "You ain't here by yourself, are you?"

Benjamin frowned, and titled his head toward the fabric store. "Parents and Nira," he muttered. Needless to say, he wasn't too happy about having to play dress-up. "For the past three months her wedding is all anyone's been talking about." Needless to say, Benjamin has been cast by the wayside before while his five older sisters (Five. Older. Sisters.) all planned their weddings. Nira was the fifth, and at this point he was old enough to be sick of it. "What about you? Are you alone?" He hadn't been able to attend the meeting at the lodging house, but Racetrack had (very exasperatedly) filled him in.

"Ah," David said with a note of sympathy to his voice, making him think of his own sister and how she hadn't found anyone just right yet. "Well don't wander off, we don't want you disappearing like all the rest," David warned. He paused at Benjamin's question, it had never crossed his mind about him being alone, or Jack or Dodger or any of the leaders for that matter. "Uh...yes, for the moment but I'm meeting up with Jack and Les in a little while."

Benjamin regarded David for a moment, thinking that he should probably practice what he preached. But he knew that things were just different for the leaders and those close to them. It was just how things were, he didn't normally complain. He glanced at the papers under David's arm. "How's...how's sellin'?"

"Slow," David replied, but the truth was he hadn't been trying all that hard. He'd promised Jack that he'd take to the streets and help keep an eye on the Newsies that were out there while Jack figured out what the plan was with the others. David didn't mind it so much, it was good to at least be attempting to do something until they took on the workhouse later. "Will we be seeing you later?"

Benjamin blushed a bit and stared at the ground. "Um..." he fiddled with the strap of his bag. "I was...I, uh...well, Jack said...if you weren't a hundred percent sure...he said I could go find Miss Mason to help out later..." He hated to tell David that he wasn't going to fight with them. It was just a bad idea for him to go along. Benji knew that the moment he heard a gunshot, he wouldn't be able to go any further. And his parents...
What about David's parents?
"Wait," he said suddenly, looking back to David again. "David...are you going?" David had a little brother and a sister and parents...he had a lot to lose! He was crazy for wanting to go...

"Jack's right, we do need to have Miss Mason ready if there are problems," David mused, knowing that if was more than likely "when" rather than "if", but it would be good to know there would be people waiting to help, he'd heard some noise about a barmaid in Brooklyn too. (Brooklyn of all places!)
"Of course I'm going," David scoffed at Benjamin's question, because really, there was no place else David would be than right beside Jack helping to save their friends and the kids from the other boroughs. "Why wouldn't I?"

Benjamin stared at him in shock. "David..." he sputtered. "Jack said...you know..." He couldn't bring himself to say it. "What about your family?" He knew Mr. and Mrs. Jacobs from temple, and he'd never seen a closer family. If something happened to David while he was off doing something stupid, who knew what would happen? "You shouldn't go, David." Benji's brow was knotted with worry. "You and me both have somethin' else to think about."

David stared at Benjamin for a moment, because not going had never even crossed David's mind. His family knew that the kids on the street were like his second family, the way Jack was prone to tripping in and out of the Jacobs' home on occasion made that remarkably clear. "Sometimes you have to stand up for what you believe in, Benjamin, like with the strike. You have to fight against an injustice, especially when it involves people that you care about. My parents understood the strike and they'll understand this." He paused for a moment, for some reason wanting to reassure Benjamin about Les, or maybe he was reassuring himself. "I told Les to stay back, go see if he could help at Miss Mason's if he had a mind."
