She sniffled again, then threw her arms around him, hugging him. "I'm sorry.... You must think I'm just a silly... girl." She sniffled once more, then laughed letting him go. "You're a good friend and... I do really like you. I just felt so awful thinking you had lied to me about... well, something that important."

Avalanche was shocked when he was the one being hugged now. "It's okay Shine," he said hugging down to her since, he was so tall. "It's really okay, I understand why you'd be upset," he said rubbing her back. "And I should have let you know," he agreed, "I didn't help, and I'm sorry too."

She broke the hug and wiped at her face once more, "Why don't we go get a soda cream or something?" She smiled a bit, "You're not working, are you?"

He nodded. "That sounds like a great time," he said. "As a matter of fact, I just got off, and I just got paid, so it's even on me," he promised her. "Where shall we go?" he asked offering her an arm to walk with her.

Shiner smiled, taking his arm, walking with him. "Oh, I don't know... This is more your part of town, isn't it? I just came to sell a few papers and browse through that little shop. It's nice, but... Well, Uncle Walter wouldn't want anything from there, really..."

"Hmmm..." he said thinking it over. He thought for a second. "Tell you what, let's get somethin' at Tibby's how does that sound? Close, quick, all that good stuff, sound okay?" He smiled at her and didn't wait for her to say either way but started. He figured that if they changed their mind they could always change directions later.

"All right. That sounds fine." Shiner smiled, then let go of his arm, "Oh, I shouldn't leave my papers." She said as they exited the alleyway as a short cut. "I won't be a second." She moved quickly back to the shop where she had left the rest of the papers she was selling. Only three or four, but it didn't seem right just to leave them there. Not that she needed the money. Maybe she should give them to another newsie to sell. Or maybe they'd find it insulting.
Either way she wouldn"t be making that date with Avalanche again>

[NEW DAY - for Don't Ask and Dutchy] ((sentences with < > around them are spoken in Dutch )) “NIke!” Styx pushed through the crowd angrily, taking no notice of who or what he bumped into. He hadn’t seen Nike since yesterday afternoon when she had run here to Manhattan to catch a show at Medda’s. Normally he would have gone with her but he’d had a headache. She’d never disappeared like this before, so he knew something was wrong. Now Styx cursed himself for letting her go on her own! He had always assumed that because of her speed no one could catch her long enough to harm her, but now he realized that running could only save her from so much. If someone had managed to corner her into an alley… He decided not to finish that train of thought. He was normally a good natured and carefree type of guy, but when it came to his sister’s safety he could get very nasty. “ Casey! <Case, can you hear me?>” He felt like he’d searched all of Manhattan and still no sign of her! He legs ached and he felt tears pricking behind his eyes, but refused to let them fall. Styx stopped a woman with a baby cart “<Have you seen someone who looks like me but is a girl? She’s missing!>” the woman just gave him a frightened look and hurried on. “Godverdomme!”* *nicely put, it means: damn it

Don't Ask, taking a break from the soot and steam of the forge for a cigarette, was leaning into the shelter of an awning while he lit up when he heard someone in the street behind him. Hardly unusual, but this person was shouting, very frantically, in Dutch. He turned, hoping to see Dutchy again, but instead saw a boy he'd not crossed paths with yet. Nevertheless, the boy looked very agitated.
"Hey!" Don't Ask shouted, hoping to grab the boy's attention. "<You looking for someone?>"

Styx whipped his head around to look at the boy who'd called out to him. "<Yeah, my twin sister Nike! She looks a lot like me but with long blond hair, ya seen her?>" He looked around frantically while waiting for the boy to answer, hoping to see her come barreling around the corner with a smile on her face.

Taking a quick drag on his cig, Don't Ask shook his head while he flicked an ash away. "<Nope, don't recall seeing her. Seems there's been a few kids going missing lately. Strange.>" He offered the boy a puff of his cigarette. "<You know where she was last?>"

Styx accepted the fag and took a long drag, allowing the nicotine to sooth his nerves. "<Thanks, I needed that. Last i saw her she was headed for Medda's, but I've already looked there and no sign of her!>" He took another drag, handed the fag back to the boy, then then spit in his hand and held it out. "<I'm Styx, by the way. Now what's this about other kids going missing?>" If this was a borough-wide problem, then there would be that many more people to help look for his sister.

Don't Ask accepted the cig and returned the spit-shake. "<They call me Don't Ask,>" he introduced himself. "<I dunno much more than that, just that kids seem to be going missing more than usual. Keep to myself, mostly, but there was a kid I knew over in the lodging house--a newsie, yannow? No one's seen him in a few days. Everyone said he was a runaway, so I figured he just got over it and went back home. But with the things I'm hearing...>" He took another hearty drag, and exhaled the smoke in a long sigh. <"It's just got me wondering, you know?">
He eyed Styx carefully for a moment, then said, "<I don't think I've seen you on this side of the bridge before. Haven't you heard anything from your borough? Any disappearances over there? Besides your sister, I mean. Now, did you ask anyone at Medda's if they seen her last night? At least then you'd know whether or not she even got that far.>"

Styx looked longingly at Don’t Ask’s fag as he spoke before remembering that he still had one in his pocket. He lit it and took a drag before replying, “<I’m a Queens newsie, but I come into ‘Hattan pretty often. We’ve had one kid ‘go missing’, but he’s pretty young and wanders a lot. You think these disappearances are all connected?>” Another long drag, “<I looked all around outside the building, but it doesn’t open for another half hour or so. That’s where I’m headed to next I think.>”
Styx scuffed the toe of his worn-out shoe in the dust outside DA’s forge. “<You think the other boroughs are missing people too?>” If kids were disappearing all over the city, then this could be an outside threat…

"<Could be,>" Don't Ask agreed, frowning a bit. "<We make good targets, since we don't got families to miss us. Wouldn't be the first time someone set their sights on snatching orphans and runaways.>"
At the sound of toenails on concrete, Don't Ask glanced into the forge to see his dog, Horseshoe, approaching, curiosity piqued at the presence of a new person. He held out his hand and scratched Horseshoe behind the ears, letting him know that the new guy wasn't someone to get worked up over. Horseshoe took the hint and strolled right up to Styx and started sniffing his pant leg.
"<Sorry, you're not afraid of dogs, are you?>"
