Piper laughed from his remark. Thank god for boys like Rex, who care for girls and see them as humans instead of meat like most of the boys around her. The boys she held close to her heart were real boys, men in disguise, with so much maturity it was sickening.
"How nice to have my own knight and shining armor." Piper teased and ruffled his hair.

"How nice to have my own knight and shining armor."
Rex grinned, blushing slightly. He looked down and worked up enough nerve to say what he had wanted to ever since he first saw her.
"I never met a girl with such pretty dark red hair like yours." He smiled at her a little shyly, tugging on his shirt collar, his collar was always sticking up slightly, never tucked down, he always forgot to put them down. He never had patience to do buttons either.

Piper couldn't help but blush as he said that to her, she took a strain of her hair and fiddled with it, seeing how dark it really was.
"Thanks Rex." She could only say to him in her genuine smile.

Rex grinned back and nodded, before turning to trace a crack in the cement with his finger. He gestured towards the book sitting on the steps.
"What book ya readin? You like readin'? I don't read much myself, but I like it if it has pitchas..."

((NEW DAY FOR DRIFTER))
Piper sat down on the front steps during a cloudy day in Manhattan. She moved into her pocket to fetch her cigarette that she was urging to smoke. She looked up at the sky and saw the windy clouds come through and she smiled, loving the cool weather going through the area. She found her cigarette but she couldn't find her lighter. Sighing loudly she leaned back on a post while sitting on the front steps, running her fingers through her hair as the cigarette hanged in her mouth.
"Bloody hell." She mumbled, looking down at her unlit cancer stick.

Drifter made his way into Manhattan, his pace slow and thoughtful. Flicking some ash off of his cigarette he replaced it between his lips and took a long drag. Selling had been slow and little change jingled in his pocket, looking up from the ground he smiled as he saw a red headed girl sitting on the steps of the Manhattan lodging house. Jogging across the street he made his way over towards her.
"Heya pretty lady need some help?" He asked holding out a match for her.

She saw the one boy she was scared for because of all of the disappearances in the area: Drifter. She smiled as he jogged over and called her a pretty lady, making her blush furiously. She missed him, seeing his face and hearing his voice. She took his matchstick and flicked it against the concrete, making the fire come to life as she lit her stick and inhaled, feeling better already. She breathed out the smoke as she eyed the boy.
"Hey there handsome, what brings you here?" She asked him in a curious tone and a cocked eyebrow.

He shrugged a bit giving her a charming smile. "Just taking a walk, not alot of things goin' on in da Bronx. What are ya doin' out here by yaself? With all da kids missin' youse should be inside where its safe." He had been worried about her since they last saw each other, there was always a possibility that some thing could have happened. He was glad to see that it hadn't. Scratching the back of his neck he leaned against the post across from her his smile never leaving his face.
Blowing out some smoke he looked up at the lodging house. "How ya been?"

"No need to worry about me, you know I can take care of myself." She reassure him, seeing him smoke while standing up next to her. She was glad he was in once piece. She inhaled some more and had the smoke got through her nose.
"Alright, worried about you and your lovely mug. Glad to see you came back in one piece." She told him in a genuine tone and smile, "Yet you still can style that hair right. Must I always do that for you?"

"I know ya can, but that don't stop me from worryin'." He chuckled a bit watching her as she smoked. Taking the last drag from his cigarette he tossed it on the floor stomping it out with his boot. Coughing a bit into his hand he took in a breath and relaxed moving to sit on the step next to her.
"Lovely mug huh?" He laughed pushing his hat farther back on his hair. "The only one lovely here is you Piper." Drifter said laying back on the steps his arms resting on the one behind him. Looking up as if to see his hair he smiled at her. "I tried but my hair never cooperates with me," Lifting one hand he messed this his hair that was showing. "I suppose ya do."

Piper blushed again as he spoke of her. She didn't know why but when he would talk to her she would melt like butter on a hot day It was getting to be a normal routine now that she was getting to know him more. She took his hat from his head playfully and place it on her head. She then looked at his hair and smiled.
"Do mind if I tried to fix it? Cause it looks like a cat is sleeping on it!" She replied to him as she waited for a answer from him.

Drifter smiled when she blushed, he loved that he was able to make her do that. He looked up when she took his bowler hat and placed it on her head, "Still think it looks good on you." He said pointing to the hat now covering her red hair, he was still amazed by it's color.
He laughed energetically at her words. "A cat? Well that would explain why it looks like that all the time. Go ahead I don't mind."

Piper smiled and she pushed some of her own hair back form her face. She reach out slowly to his hair and felt how soft his hair was in her fingertips and palm. She cocked her head to the side as she worked on his hair, tossing it on one side, smoothing it out on the otherside. She didn't want him to look too fancy, but still suitable for a newsie to get some pay.

Drifter started to relax as she ran her fingers through his hair. He had never really cared what his hair looked like but he knew she would make it look good, she had made it look great the last time she had done this. He looked up trying to look at her without moving his head to much so she could continue with her actions, "So what have you been up too eh? A beautiful girl like yaself would usually be out doing something."

Piper liked running her finger through his hair, it felt right. THough she wasn't going to be the one to tell him that, so she kept that little detail to herself as she kept brushing over his forehead every once in awhile, feeling his hot skin against her fingers and palm.
"I was going to go out and see some sight but the Delancy brothers are on the prowl. They don't like me much." She muttered the last part as she pulled away and saw her masterpiece and smiled, it looked rather good to her as she cocked her head to the side and grinned.
"Now you look handsome, like a proper gentlemen, and a good looking one too if I should say so myself." She said to him in a wink and a small laugh.
