Jade followed and looked around."I usaully git inta trouble,I'se keep ta myself alot,I'se jist havin a good day." She said and set down her boxes to knock on the door."is dis hoity toity
box in your pile or mine?" She asked as she dark green eyes scanned the boxes.She took out a cigarette and popped it in her moulth,then she remembered that she was about ta see richies and reluntantly stuck it in her pocket.She was alittle nervous about seeing people of a higher status but didn't let it show.

He smiled at her slightly, "You, a troublemaker? naw...you looks like an angel to me," He joked sarcastically, teasing slightly but in a fun way.
He searched his boxes for the name he was looking for, Monahan.
"Hmmm...Monahan, Monahan, Monahan," He moved onto her pile, mumbling the name as he searched until he found the bottom box. "Monahan Monahan Monah- here," He stopped and picked it up.
He watched her put her cigarette away, an awed look on his face. His sister never let him get close to that thing, and hear was this girl smoking. He had to say he was a little impressed, though he could wait to smoke. He heard it tasted real bad anyways.
The door opened and a lady looked down at them, looking somewhat surprised to see two streetkids standing on her porch.
Reeves quickly stepped forward, her hatbox in hand.
"Mrs. Monahan? I'm from Greeley Department store and I got your new hat right here," He explained as politely as he could, tipping his gray cap to her.

Jade stood patiently next to reeves,trying as hard as she could not to laugh,this hoity toity had the most refined accent.Jade wasn't used to that.She rolled her eyes and looked away towards the street and sighed.Her eyes widened as she saw two bulls strolling down the street,she always scared of them.They hurt her so much in the past,not those bulls imparticular,just bulls in general.Jade gripped reeves shoulder to signal us to go than picked up her share of boxes and hid behind them,she watched the bulls slowly but surely walk away then sighed with relief.

Reeves gave her a small confused look and followed her line of gaze to the cops. He knew the coppers didn't take keenly to street kids, it had been somewhat true in Jersey. Either they just scared her or she was running away from them. He nodded to the lady, collected his pay, not a single tip, sighed, picked up his pile, took Jade's arm, and guided them towards the next house.
"You okay, Jade?" He asked, concern somewhat apparent in his eyes, he didn't know what it was about this girl, but he was really happy to have her along. Usually life was boring and his job was being looked down on all day, by the rich that opened their doors to see him. She made it better somehow.

He nodded, he had been out the streets doing his deliveries and had seen plenty prejudice towards the newsies from the bulls.
He lugged the boxes and almost dropped them at her next question. He felt a little embarrassed to admit the truth that he didn't. Here was a girl, same age as him, smoking and he was a boy!
He shook his head sheepishly, "Naw, my sister thinks its bad. Says it will give me some lung disease or something."

Jade nodded in agreement,"Don' start,it'll kill ya."
Jade smiled at him, "you'se got a sista?" "Dats cool." jade looked away for a second thinking a char.She shook her head and hoisted up her boxes."I'se don' see how you'se could do this all day long every damn day!""What I'se would do is sell all de'se hoity toity hats and git myself out of new yawk, but dat would neva woik fer me,I'se wouldn't leave new yawk,even if you'se paid me! Da city calls ta me."She smiled at him once again."Did a place eva call ta you'se befoar?"

Reeves nodded, not looking particularily overjoyed. "Yeah, Alice. She's okay. A little too fussy sometimes, we get on each other's nerves. But she's okay I guess. She's learning how to be a teacher."
Reeves smirked slightly at her outburst of his boring job. He shrugged. "Well, I used to work in a blacksmith shop with a fourteen hour shift. I'd take this job any day."
"Yeah, well I just got here from Jersey bout a month ago, why pack up and leave again?"
At this question he sighed and looked at his shoes. "Yeah, I used to dream all the time of leaving Jersey, it was okay, I liked Jersey, me parents was the problem, they fought a lot. Whenever they would have a really bad arguement, I would lay in bed, thinking of some kind of adventurous journey I would go on. Guess it was kind of foolish, everywhere you go yar treated like trash either way..."

Jade stopped in front of him,and set down her boxes "Ya know reeves,we'se are handed the shorter end of da stick now,but lata we'se will do good or at least be happy,and we'se will have a sense of pride about it,cause we'se woiked off our butts to git it!,it wasn't handed to use like how it is handed ta does hoity toities,dat thought is what has been gitting trough desed last couple of months,it's wut i'se told char-i'se mean its wut i'se told people almost everyday."She picked up her boxes and hopped on foot to foot,and looked around looking at the houses

Reeves listened to her determined speech, nodding, but couldn't say much. He felt bad that he didn't seem to have as much hope as Jade did. He'd been working hard his whole life, and what did he get? His Ma leaves without so much as a goodbye, His father leaves not too much later to find a place to work. Alice and Seth had never gotten along, and now suddenly they were all each other had left. Reeves was now more than ever grateful to have his sister now.
He heard her mistake that she had tried to cover up. Char. He wanted to ask about it, but he didn't want Jade to be hurt by the remembrance of whoever Char was. He sighed and picked up his boxes.
"Jade? You all alone? No family?" He asked, really hoping she wasn't all alone. He would feel awful for her if she had to face hard work and poor treatment all alone.

Jade looked at him her dark green eyes blurred with tears,she rarely cried,but this was the first time she REALLY thought about that night...."Ya all alone,I'se mean I'se a newsie and I'se live wid dem,but I'se jist hasn't made friends yit."

she wiped a tear away and gave him a forced smile

Reeves watched her beautiful dark green eyes cloud with tears, and he regretted his question. She seemed so strong, he hadn't meant to bring up a sad past. He sighed and looked at the ground, he had to comfort her. He reached out slowly and took her hand, not saying a word, just offering a small smile.
"Well I'se have a mudda,but after what happened,I'se couldn't stay."
Reeves wondered what happened, but definitely wasn't going to question. He just nodded.
"You probably did the right thing, if something went wrong or you weren't happy, its better to go somewhere where things might be better. That's what I say about my Ma, even though I'm not sure if that's the reason she left. But I figure all things are destiny..."

"Well, we'll get rid of them. One lady bought ten hats, can you believe it? Ten hats! Either she really likes hats, or her husband is making up for some arguement he had with her," He let that good natured lopsided smirk spread across his face, his eyes twinkling slightly. He wanted to cheer up Jade as best as he could.
They started walking down the street and Jade asked a curious question.
."So what jeresey like,is it as exitin as new yawk."
He smiled and shook his head. "Naw, I spose the city is more exciting, Jersey ain't a city, its fields, and cottages, small slums and suburbs, the city's huge and busy. But I liked Jersey alright I guess. Didn't really enjoy the work, but the countryside was nice."

She nodded,"Ya if dese hoity toitys are fighting she must really know how ta git ta him,she prolly makin 'im sleep on da couch,which wit dere kind a money,it's prolly comfortable!" she laughed and gave him a nudge and blew her hair out of her face."Have ya eva seen inta dere houses?I'se neva seen a richies house,Well once,It was ta crash a pahty do,I'se ended up in da refuge only,fer a couple a days,den me faddas bosses son broke me out,da bum.I'se still tink it was woith it!"
