( New Day )
The area surrounding the abandoned building was fairly silent save the slow clip clop of hooves as Michael's horse approached. He had his orders, and though the idea of searching children out for no other reason than to arrest them didn't sit well with the young rookie, he found he had little choice in the matter. As he neared the building he no more than glanced in the broken windows as he passed, hoping he didn't find anyone so he wouldn't feel obligated to bring them in.

((New))
Robert stood in the doorway of the empty building -- leaning on the worn, broken panel -- looking over the scenery through the rain. Robert loved the rain. It made everything around him seem more surreal. Everything around him was peaceful and quiet.

Evie had been on her way back to the Bronx when the rain had hit, she was breathing heavily when she saw the outcropping and then her eyes widened when she saw the man in the doorway. Robert.. she hadn't seen him in awhile. Picking up her skirt she made sure her bonnet was secure as she raced over to get out of the rain. "Robert!" she had been the little mouse of the rich of their age group. Once she'd managed to grab her inheritance she'd bought herself a book shop with a garden on the roof. She couldn't be happier with how her circumstances had changed.

He squinted his eyes to see the distant form come closer. Her calling his name confirmed to Robert that he did indeed know this girl, or at least knew her. He hadn't seen her for some time.
"Evangeline..." he muttered, looking more closely to see if it was really her. Robert took off his suit jacket and offered it to her without asking if she wanted it. Even after all that happened he was still a gentleman.

She shifted under his jacket and smiled at him, she was really happy he was alright. She'd heard some terrible things recently. And none of them were good, she offered him a smile.
"How are you?" she had worried about him, out of all the people they had run with in the circles he had always been kind to the mouse of the group. The one that would rather be with flowers and books.

"I'm alive," he said ironically, smiling. Robert, for the most part, had always been kind-hearted to a fault. He was always told his generosity would be the death of him and in a manner of speaking, it had been. Still, his unfortunate position didn't turn him hard like it would others, just wiser.
"And you Evangeline, how has this life been treating you?"

She shook her head and smiled a little, "Remember awhile back when I was having that war of words with that dock worker?" It had been ages ago but she remembered telling Robert about his run in with Jim long ago. "I met him again, and helped him save his job and I teased him a little..." she flushed, her teasing was always as it was. She was sweet natured girl with a razor wit.
"I bought my book store, I-- live in the Bronx now but no one really lets me keep away."

"So it is true," he said with a raised brow. "You have left society to become a book keeper. Good show, I say. You're better off making your own way." He was proud of her. She used her inheritance to do something she really loved, which was more than he could say for himself. Robert wasn't one to wallow in his own self-pity. He had chosen his route knowing the consequences for doing so and because they hadn't worked out the way he had planned, he had to rebuild himself. Some that was not easily achieved with ever social slamming the door in his face.

She gave him a smile and tilted her head a little bit, "Where are you staying?" she tugged on his jacket to help warm herself a bit. She was glad she did what she wanted to do, used her inheritance for something that made her happy instead of staying where she was miserable all the time.

Robert stepped back further into the building lifting his hands as if he were showing the old building to a couple buyers. "Here. Most of the time." Sure it wasn't his Fifth Avenue mansion, but it kept him safe from the elements and warm on cold nights.

Her jaw dropped and she shook her head, "No.. that won't do at all.. why don't you come stay with me? You can use the spare room in the back of the shop.. I-- I don't feel right about you staying here.." That was Evie for you, always had to take care of everyone else.

He smiled, chuckling a bit. She hadn't changed. She was still the sweet and caring girl he remembered her to be. "I'm afraid I must decline and be careful to whom you give your generosity. It may very well be your downfall." He smiled at the words that were once said to him and proven to be true. He didn't know why he declined her offer. It was just his first instinct and as always, he went with it.

She frowned, at that, looking as if she was trying to figure out a way to help. "I wish you would reconsider I'd worry you being here alone.. " But hadn't someone else said that to her? No they'd said that she was to much of a mouse for her own good and her ideas that everyone was equal despite their station was foolish. But she still believed it. "If you need anything..." it was an offer still and she would never retract it. He was her friend.

"I will," he finished. "Thank you." Her kindness was of no surprise to him, but was nevertheless a bit overwhelming. He didn't know if Evangeline was one of the few people who truly knew what had become of him, but it seemed to not matter to her. She was a good person and he was thankful.

She offered him a smile and nodded, he needed that and she probably had a good idea what had happened if it was mentioned to Marie. But she would probably always worry about him. "Please be careful, Robert.."
