jade sat down and smiled at danny as he stuck his tongue out at reeves,she looked at alice and gave her a smile.
she looked at reeves and danny once more,they seemed to be having fun exchanging funny faces,jade looked across the table and noticed theat darry was staring,jade smiled at him and hid in her hair,her cheecks burning,silently praying that reeves didn't notice.

Alice noticed the looks between her brother Darry and Jade and smiled, how come she didn't see it before? Darry always cheered up when Jade was around.
Then Danny interrupted his sister's thoughts by asking, "We gonna eat or give our pork roast to some hungry goats huh?"
"You're the goat, you'll eat anything," Reeves retorted laughing.
"Yeah well, your an old fat lazy grizzly bear in winter, that's all you do is sleep," Danny said back, his brown eyes glinting competitively.
"Boys, that's enough," Alice scolded and both boys were quiet. "Let's say grace before the food gets cold."
She bowed her head and Darry said a word of prayer before they finished and Danny started helping himself to some mashed potatoes. Darry offered to spoon some corn onto Jade's plate.

jades eyes widened slightly as darry asked if she wanted him to spoon corn onto jades plate.
'Speak jade,use words!!use words!' jade thought to her self but could only nod.
as he did so jade looked at the wall and mentally scolded herself for acting this way.
'stop!' she thought to herself and smiled at darry as he went to his own plate and started to serve herself.
'I almost died!'
jade thought to herself,jade looked at danny and started to tell a joke to him,desperate to get away from her thoughts.

Danny laughed and snorted, he loved jokes and laughed at pretty much anything. He had this wide irresistible grin that made everybody else grin.
Alice ate a spoonful of soup and then swallowed looking at Danny. "Danny, did you add something again?" She asked, half scolding, half laughing.
"Just a pinch! Admit it, its better that way!" Danny protested mischeviously, digging into his own soup. Reeves was quiet, just enjoying his meal and sending Jade small smiles every once in awhile, not noticing the goings on between Darry and Jade. He had always been the more quiet one in the family. Darry commented politely on his sister's cooking.

jade stuck her tongue out at reeves and nudged danny and smiled at alice complimenting with the soup.
jade looked at darry and smiled to herself stupidly,she looked away quickly and nudged what she hoped was reeves foot playfully.

Alice eyed her family carefully. Danny worked as a mechanic for the Trolley company, yes he was very young for it, at seventeen years old, but because of his knowledge and skill in that area, they hired him.
Darry went to school during the day, taking classes and sometimes exams all morning long. He worked on his homework and studies for hours, grades are very important to him, because he felt guilty about not working and helping out with the money situation, he did random little jobs around the apartment when he had time.
Reeves was...the youngest of the family, one of the reasons Alice fussed about him more than she normally would. He worked hard and came home tired usually, and sometimes didn't say much. He was a cheerful boy, he wasn't usually down about anything, just quiet. She was glad he found a best friend in Jade, because Jade is like a best friend to her too. She wanted to ask him so badly about that girl who stopped by the other day. Danny had said she wasn't no lower class kid, nor middle working class either. She just sighed and shook her head, and took a sip of her soup again.
"So Jade, how have you been? We haven't seen you in awhile. The news been slow lately? You have enough clothes? I've been thinking of knitting you a nice new blouse. I was going to have Danny or Reeves run to Hattie's shop to get me some yarn soon." Alice asked, striking up conversation amongst the meal.

jade smiled heartliy at alice ,wishing she had the looks that she did.
"Yea news is slow,ise been s'ok,tryin ta be moar social around the lodgin house,met a friend,
dis an anotha pair of clothes is all i'se have,an you'se don' need ta alice."
jade said with a smile.
she looked at darry and got up the courage to speak.
"So darry,hows yer studies goin?"
she looked at reeves and offered a smile

Alice shook her head at that and grinned at the younger girl. "I know you would say no Jade, but I'm making you one anyways. I've already got the color picked out, it will look stunning on you. Besides, I have so much time after my shift at the bakery that I'm going to wear out the cabinets if I scrub them one more time."
"So darry,hows yer studies goin?"
"They've been fine, I'm taking a higher course now, my professor advised me too. It's fairly harder, but I'm starting to get the hang of it now. Just a few more years and maybe I'll get my college degree, go on and be a teacher."
"Yeah, then maybe you can teach this goof the alphabet, Teach," Reeves remarked, gesturing to Danny who shoved him playfully. "It starts with A...B...C.." Reeves added laughing. Darry laughed slightly as well, a subtle yet nice smile on his clean face, his light blue eyes twinkling.

jade laughed and watched darry's eyes, she quickly looked away,fearing that she would drown in their depths,she looked at danny and reeves and rolled her eyes.
"a...b...c... is prolly all you'se know of da alphabet reeves."
jade said playfully and alice laughed.
jade smiled at reeves daring him to give her his best shot.

"No, its not. I know all 24 letters!" Reeves exclaimed.
"It's 26 kiddo," Darry corrected chuckling. Alice laughed her musical laugh and Danny joined in laughing as well.
Reeves just rolled his eyes slightly, slightly embarrassed., "Okay, I know all 26 letters, and if you want me to recite them I will."

jade laughed when darry corrected him.
she moved the bangs from her face and slung an arm over danny playfully.
"S'ok reeves,ya can if ya want ta,but danny or darry can't help you'se cheat."
she said smiled cockily.

Reeves shook his head, he was fifteen, he didn't have to prove he knew his abc's. Darry just punched him lightly on the shoulder. He was a sensitive older brother. Danny finished up his soup and asked for a second helping, then a third, until he just took the pan away from Alice and poured the rest of the soup into his bowl.
They finished off supper and Darry sighed, knowing he should get back to studying with exams coming up and everything, but he didn't want to.

jade helped alice with cleaning up and she looked over at darry (no suprise there)
she saw him looked tense and less happy than he was ten minutes ago,jade walked over and stood in front of him,he was so engrossed with his thoughts that he didn't noticed her until she said his name. "Darry,whats wrong?"
jade offered him a smile.

Darry looked up to see Jade, she was concerned. He just smiled slightly, a small weary smile. "I don't know. I just don't feel like studying tonight. I can't just not study though when I have exams in two days. I guess I wish I could just hang out with all you guys instead."

jade took his hand."Hang out wit us den,if you'se want i'se could help ya wit studying."
jade offered,she wasn't stupid,before the incident she did go to the library with char everyday,she new enough.
she used her other hand to ruffle his hair.
jade looked over at reeves,"please,i'se know you'se study alot,so a little family time plus jade would be very nice."
