Golly finished buttoning up his shirt in the mirror and pulled on his cap. Another day off to work. The only good thing about his dingy sparsly decorated appartment was how close it was to work. The station, stable, and refuge were all withen close proximity. He gathered up his things and headed out the door, locking it mindlessly behind him. Another day at work to go deal with the crime and dirt of the city. He let out a long groan.

Sweets stood outside, pacing back and fourth on the sidewalk. She had made her decision, and though she could no longer stay in Manhattan after what she said to Jack, there was no way she was going to be a thief. Not knowing whether the corrupt police would rightly care about a band of thieves recruiting children to do their dirty work, she still felt she should at least try. Right as she decided to go in she saw officer McLean coming out of the building.

Golly pulled his satchel over his head and pushed it behind him as he descended to stairs. He stopped at the base to take in the morning air, making sure to shield his eyes from the blinding sun. He noticed the little blond newsie a few feet from where he stood and smiled, he recognized this one, never seemed to pose any problems so she made his job easy. "Hey kid" He said as he passed "nice day." and tipped his hat as he headed for the stables.

She stood there for a moment, debating walking away, when she spun back toward him, catching up. "Hey, uh, I sorta got somethin' I wanted ta tell ya McLean," she said awkwardly, adjusting her hat lower on her head.

He didn't stop walked but looked down at her curiously. She seemed a little hesitant so he had no idea what to exspect. It wasn't every day a newsie would talk to him. "Yeah kid? Let's 'ave it, I can't be late for work."

She kept up with his brisk pace, thinking how to say this. "Well, ya see, there's these thieves," she began, stuffing her hands in her pockets as she walked. "They're lookin' for kids. Kids ta woik." She shrugged slightly, waiting for him to brush it off and continue on his way. Well, At least she tried.

Golly slowed a bit and sighed shaking his head slightly. "Yeah well I don't like the idea of a bunch a kids being sucked inta stealing for some wealthy ring leadah but thats what happens in a city." He frowned at her. "What do ya expect me to do about it? An' whats it gotta do with you anyway - yer a sweet kid, hell its yer name.." Its the type of story he hated to hear about, the corruption was only spreading when young ones were drawn in. But thats not what his job was about even if he wanted it to be - his job was about protecting the Mayor's and the Sargent's kickbacks or being a gopher for Snyder's private agenda. The system was corrupt no matter what he did.

Though it was the very reaction she was expecting, she couldn't hide the anger in her voice. "What do I expect ya ta do about it? How 'bout stop 'em huh? Cop stopin' an actual theif an' not a newsie tryin' ta get a meal a new concept for ya or what?" She sighed, knowing her temper would get her no where, she attempted to calm down -- and failed. "Listen, I jist t'ought you'd look into it, but seein' as how ya got more important things ta do like kiss da mayors ass, I'll leave ya to it."

Golly's jaw about fell off. Sure everything she said was true but he didn't like doing it or do it by choice. After the initial shock passed he narrowed his eyes at her and stopped walking. He was the adult, an officer taboot, there was no reason for her to get that testy with him, or at least he thought so.
"Sweets, I got a job ta do an' I do it if I like it or not. I'm jus' one more cog in the wheel, if I break off the rest keep on turnin'. I don't have much power," He was waving his hand about to prove his point. "I do as much as I can ta help kids like you" he pointed at her now then his anger melted and his hand came up to his face. He stared at her for a minute and sighed deeply. These kids plucked his heart strings more because of his past than anything. "Fine kid. I'll try ta find out about it only if ya can tell me more 'bout it. I don't promise anythin' though..."

"Midtown, neah Hell's Kitchen," she said, avoiding his gaze and feeling a bit foolish for how she just spoke to someone who could have her arrested. "They posted signs on da lodgin' house doors, not jist in 'hattan either, all ovah da city. They're lookin' for kids ta pick pockets for 'em. An' . . " she paused, glancing around at the crowded streets and lowered her voice. "An' I've been hearin' things . . hoid they's got a nasty tempah, an' some kids can't leave even if they wanna. . " She glanced around nervously once more, wondering if they were watching her.

He scrunched up his forehead when he realized she was obviously becoming nervous. He looked around a bit, just as she did, to see if he saw anyone 'suspicious' then dropped his voice to talk to her. "Yer obviously uncomfortable...is someone followin' you right now?" He was genuinely conserned. She was upset and seeked him out for help so he was going to give it to her as much as he could anyways. "Did you get yerself in trouble with these..these theives?" He raised an eyebrow wondering if she was one of the kids that had become a theif and now wasn't allowed to walk away from it.

"I didn't join if that's what ya mean," she said, slightly defensive, embarrassed at how close she had really come. "I went ta check 'em out, he acted all nice like, but aftah I left, that's when I hoid more about 'em, how they don' let ya leave." she glanced behind her again. "I dunno, I can't imagine they'd be too happy ta see me heah with you is all." She shrugged, pulling her hat low. "Jist thought ya might look inta it," she finished quietly and turning to leave.

Golly nodded at her, glad she hadn't gotten herself in too deep. AS she turned to leave he put his hand on her shoulder to stop her. "One last question. Who's in charge of them here in Manhattan, maybe the name'll come up at work." He let got of her and adjusted his hat. This was the type of stuff he wanted to take care of...but it was a crap shoot if he'd be able to do anything. Not many cops would back him up.

Glancing around once more she spoke in a low whisper. "Fletchah, Fletchah Thomes." and with that she was off, vanishing into the crowded streets.
