Stacks upon stacks of crates that are loaded on and off of ships. The newsies like to jump off the crates into the water on hot days.

Smiley walked onto the docks a little cautiously. She had never been to Brooklyn before and Jack had told her never to go there by herself. She wanted to show him though, she wanted to explore. She spotted the crates and figured that was a good place to hide if there was any danger. She sat down behind one and sat, boredly. Her nose was running and she kept sneezing and sniffling.

Milo had come down to Brooklyn meet up with Gwennie but was unable to find her and decided to go to the docks instead. As he walked by the crates watching the dock workers load them on and off of the boats, he saw a girl who looked to be around his age sniffling and sneezing as she sat on one of the crates, looking troubled and slightly bored. " you okay?" he asked succinctly, walking up to the crate that she was sitting on.

Smiley looked up and jumped slightly but when she saw it was just a little boy she smiled.
"Yeah, I'se.....ACHOOO!.....fine. I just think I'm having a sneezing attack is all." She said giggling a little.

"Oh, okay" replied Milo, not exactly sure why that wasn't something to be concerned about, but not really feeling compelled delve further into the matter. He climbed up onto a crate next to the girl and watched her for awhile before speaking up again "so, what's ya business at da docks?" he asked in a quiet and off-handed tone.

"Well, I was bored and Jack always told me not to come to Brooklyn alone, but I wanted to so I did, but I guess I was kinda scared so I stayed here. What about you?" She asked smiling up at him.

"Well, I was gonna play wit' my friend Gwennie, 'cause she's a newsie down heah, but i couldn't find her so I came heah instead 'cause I like ta watch da workahs work" explained Milo, glancing over at the dock workers as a younger looking one almost dropped a crate on an older worker's foot. He giggled and watched more intently as the older worker vehemently cussed out the younger one. "Look at dat" he said to the girl, pointing at the two quarreling men.

"Oh boy, I wouldn't want ta be him. Da older one looks bout ready ta kill him." She pointed out giggling also. She watched in interest a big grin on her face, showing her cute little dimples.

"Yeah, he's prolly pretty new though, he's prolly youngah den Jack, even. Dat oldah guy's gonna go easy on 'im 'cause a' dat." He had watched that older man before and he knew that he wasn't actually that much of a danger. All bark and no bite, but it was still fun to see how scared the new boys got when he chewed them out. the older ones weren't intimidateded by him anymore because they, like Milo, seemed to know that the man wouldn't do any harm.

Smiley nodded, kind of understanding. She looked up at Milo and thought he was kind of cute. She blushed a little at the thought and shook her head, shaking her light brown curls.
"My name's Smiley, Smiley Anderson. You?" She asked holding out her little petite hand.

Milo turned his attention back to Smiley, surprised by the sudden change of topic "Oh, my name's Milo...um, Milo Dvorak" he added quickly, not exactly sure how much of one's name was supposed to be used in an introduction. "well, Radek Miloslav Dvorak, really, but people jus' calls me Milo 'cause my real name's too hard ta say" he anded awkwardly, shrugging and shaking her outstretched hand. Talking with people was always a bit unnatural for him until he really knew them well. Usually, he just watched them from afar rather than actually engaging in conversation with them.

"I like yar name. Milo. It's cute." She told him grinning. She noticed he was kind of shy and she didn't want to make him feel uncomfortable, so she turned away and looked ahead of her.

"t'anks" he replied, not quite sure whether he liked his name being described as 'cute' or not. "how old're ya?" he asked, breaking the silence that he knew bothered most people. Personally, he had no problem with silence, he loved it, but he didn't want her to be uncomfortable on his account.

"Depends, you a customah?" he joked, giving her a rare smile "If ya' are, I'm five, If ya' not, I'm seven" In truth, he usually didn't get around to mentioning his age to customers. He usually stuck to telling them tall tales about how he would be beaten or abused in other horrible ways (which were quite entertaining to invent) if he didn't sell all of his papers. That is, if they didn't just buy his papers to make him stop staring at them.
