Oh, boy Dodger must have been looking for trouble when he said that. "That's great! Is Brooklyn really scary? Is Spot Conlon a big mean man? I think he has to be, right? He sounds scary for getting mad at people just for walking through his teratiery." Perry stumbled over the word territory, not being very familiar with it. "Does he carry a bat and hit people with it when he gets mad? Have you ever met him? Does he scare you?"

Dodger laughed and shook his head, putting his hand on the kids head and giving his hair a tussle. "Calm down, mate. Aye, I'd say that Spot can be a scary bloke and he doesn't hit people with a bat lad, it's the cane that he uses. Aye-- the cane and I haven't seen the bloke in awhile.. and he's not really--- big." Short was the word that came to mind but Dodger was never going to say that out loud... little kids said thing later and he didn't want Perry to call Spot short... ever.

Perry nodded, his brain going a mile a minute while he took in everything Dodger was saying. "Why does he have a cane? Is he old? But if he's old then why are people scared of him?" Perry was really starting to get on a roll here, Dodgers had him riveted but he also couldn't stop his mind from traveling in a dozen different directions.

Dodger sighed and then chuckled, energetic kid. "Nah, he's not old, he's no older than I am, the cane means power, lad. He's the the leader of Brooklyn for a reason, the most famous Newsie in New York, lad.. for a reason. We all have reasons we were chosen for where we are, compassion, the power to move people or even just because people gravitate to us. But Conlon, it's because he's got the guts to hold Brooklyn."

"Dat's what I told 'im" retorted Dewey defensively "Basically...sorta" he said sitting up in the hammock and swinging his feet over the edge of it.

Dodger looked at Dewey and smirked, giving the boy's hat a tug down farther on his face, "You did fine, lad, make me proud. We're family here and if we don't look out for each other, who will?" He liked his kids and most of them were just that, he felt like a cross between a father and a older brother at times, trying to teach them how to survive but at the same time protecting them in a way.
If they deserved the soaking that was different, he'd had to many kids running to him to save them when they deserved the beating and he wouldn't step in. It was a learning experience.

"Yeah" replied Dewey bluntly, not quite sure what else to say "So" he said turning to Perry "have ya sold yet, kid?"

Perry shook his head, "Not here, but I used to sell all the time with Lexi. She always said people felt bad for us because they thought I was her kid so they'd give us more money than they would give to Reid." Perry nodded his head slightly, he was beginning to calm down a bit. "Do you think people will think that here too?"

Dots was done selling her papers, so she went to the boy's lodging house to find Dewey, when she heard his voice, she stopped on the stairs.
"Yeah, probably. It don't mattah wheah ya are, dere's always people dat feel bad foah young, unwed muddahs an' dere kids"
She chuckled at what he said, having no idea who he was talking to, or what they were talking about. She opened the door and walked in.
"Hey Dewey, what are ya talkin' 'bout?"

"Oh, hey Dots. Jus' fillin' da new kid in on da ins an' outs a' sellin' in New York"
She smiled when he kissed her and hugged her around the waist. "Well, dat's real nice of ya Dewey. " She walked up to the new kid and said, "My name's Dots, what's ya name?"
As she asked the question, she noticed their leader, Dodger, out of the corner of her eye. "Heya Dodger. "

Perry stuck his tongue out when Dewey kissed Dot, he thought it was so disgusting when older people did that. He'd seen some boy kiss the back of his sisters hand once and he'd threatened to give him a black eye. Of course, he'd been five at the time and hadn't been taken seriously at all. Once the boy had picked him up and thrown him over his shoulder all had been forgiven. "I'm Perry," Perry said with a smile.

The look on Dodger's face had to mirror Perry's, weren't these kids to young to be making kissy faces at each other? He looked over at Perry as he introduced himself and then over at Dots. Was she one of his? Jeez Louise. Well she did say hi to him so he nodded, "Hey, lass mind if I steal Perry away from you lot, why not learn to sell from the leader eh?" And get him the hell out of here. He liked Dewey just fine but Dots was one of the new girls and there for under the car of the girls at the lodging house-- he really needed to appoint one of the girls over there to look over the girls

Dots smiled when Perry stuck out his tongue. "I'm Perry,"
"It's nice ta meetcha Perry." She said as she smiled at him.
"Hey, lass mind if I steal Perry away from you lot, why not learn to sell from the leader eh?"
She turned her attention to Dodger and shook her head,"Nah, it's poifectly fine if ya take Perry. He might learn some moah." She smiled.
