Aura stood at the vegetable cart, looking over what was for sale that day. She was hoping to get back to her apartment and make some sort of soup, as she was sick of the pub food she managed to snatch and eat while on a shift.
She reached out and gingerly touched the carrots. The cart owner glared at her hand, which had a smudge of dirt on it. Aura pulled her hand back as if the carrot scorched her, frowning. She tucked a bit of hair back into its place and turned, pondering over whether she'd get caught for stealing just a few vegetables...

Avalanche saw what was going on and smiled just a touch. He walked over to her. "Hello there miss, any chance I can be of some assistance?" he asked her just trying to be nice.

Aura glanced over at the man speaking to her. "No. No thank you. I was just about to leave," she said quickly.

He looked at her curiously. "Alright," he said. "I won't stop you, just... wondered if I could help you at all." He thought for a second. "Wait, just a moment, won't you? Aren't you... a waitress in Manhattan? In the Pub?" she looked vaugely familiar.

She eyed him and figured that he seemed harmless enough. "In Hell's Kitchen," she said. "I do waitress there."
She knew the regulars there so well, and since this man didn't look familliar, he wasn't a regular.

"Right," he said nodding. "Pardon me ma'am." He offered his hand to her. "M'names Avalanche, you probably don't know me. I only came in once... little while ago," he shrugged a little. "I... heh... I remember your hair," he said looking at it's vibrant red color.

She gently touched her hair, blushing. "It is difficult to forget someone whose hair looks like carrots," she said. "I'm Sarah, but everyone calls me Aura."

"People call me Avalanche," he said with a soft smile. He smiled brightly to her. "Nice to meet you Aura." He glanced over at the cart again. "So doing a little shopping?" he asked making casual conversation.

"I was planning on it, but it looks like I'm an undesired presence here," Aura said, glaring at the man who was running the vegetable cart.

Avalanche rolled his eyes. "Only if ya steal... this guy does an inventory every couple of hours... and keeps a close eye. He's no dummy like some of them other cart owners. He'll sell ya anything... but ya gotta pay."

"Hmph. Well, I reached out to examine the carrots and he looked at me like my fingers had poison on them," Aura said, giving the cart man another glare.

He nodded and looked her up and down once. "Well... and no offence miss, but maybe he thought you were a street rat or something. I just mean there's a lotta kids, like newsies, and chimney sweeps, and other things that hang around here. And if he thought you were one of them..." Avalanche shrugged a little. "My suggestion? Show 'im ya money foist... then see what ya can do." He gave her a genuine yet charming smile, to show that it was just a suggestion.

Aura smiled at Avalanche. "But the street rats are some of the nicest kids," she said.
"Do I look like a chimney sweep?" she asked him, laughing.

"No! No! Much cleaner and nicer and prettier than most chimney sweeps I ever met," he said with the same genuine smile. "And some of the street rats may be nice... I'm friends with some of 'em, but people don't trust 'em because they don't have much money, and... may not pay sometimes..." he admited.
