"That is, if you don't have anywhere better to stay tonight... My apartment is on Fifth Avenue, so we can take a carriage to pick up your things... if you'd like."
Pup's eyes widened in excitement but he shook his head slightly. A thoughtful look on his face.
"I don't really have that many things at all Miss, I only have one other set a' clothes besides what I have on. I don't really have any special things either. So we could just go to your home, cuz the newsies wouldn't like it if I showed up in some carriage with a hoity toity...I mean, well...somebody richer like you." Pup stuttered at the end, not meaning to say hoity toity. He didn't want to hurt Valerie's feelings after how nice she was being to him.

She nodded, "I see..."
Then a bit concerned once more, "Do the other boys know about your father?" She would assume they didn't. Seitz seemed like he had a bit of wealth of his own, having maids and all. Of course, newsies usually looked out for one another, perhaps they did know, to protect him.

"Do the other boys know about your father?"
Pup shook his head. "No Miss Valerie. They don't. Well, they know Seitz. I dunno if you heard about the strike, they striked against Pulitzer, and my Father was a part of that slightly, so yes, they know him. Me being his son? No, they dunno. I didn't tell anybody at all, I was scared word would get out or something."
He was even still surprised he had told Valerie, but after keeping such a big secret bottled up for four months, he was a little frightened and weary of having to worry about such a big thing of his own.

She nodded again, picking up her spoon and thinking as she took the first few sips of her chicken noodle soup. A sandwhich on a plate and a glass of milk beside that. If her mother saw her eating this, she'd have a nervous collapse! But Stuart-- Pup, had ordered it. And Valerie wanted to be seen as a trusted friend, not some rich girl with a guilty conscience.
"Well, what do you plan on doing, Pup? You were running from the police when we met. You can't possibly continue to do that..."

Pup finished his sandwhich and soup slightly quickly. He was hungrier than he thought. He hadn't had such a large meal in a long time. He swallowed the last of his milk and giggled, knowing he probably had a milk mustache. He wiped it off with a napkin and smiled slight at Valerie again.
Well, what do you plan on doing, Pup? You were running from the police when we met. You can't possibly continue to do that...""
He shrugged, his little face becoming serious again. "I dunno, I don't want to be always scared of being found. I don't want to see him or her though either..." He said sadly.

"Why not your father? Pup, have you ever considered that me just might believe you?" Valerie tried again, unable to help but bring it up again. She put her spoon down, speaking seriously, "Don't you think he cares enough about you to listen to you?"

"Why not your father? Pup, have you ever considered that me just might believe you?Don't you think he cares enough about you to listen to you?""
"No, cuz he never cared before," Pup snapped. "He was at work all day, I never told him about Mama cuz I was scared she would...she would kill me! She threatened to just about everyday as it was! He woulda known, I hated pretending. He never even noticed...He was so caught up in his work."

Valerie sighed, "That doesn't mean he doesn't care for you. Alot of fathers have to work very hard for the things they buy for us. My father worked all the time, too, Pup. Maybe he should have spent more time playing with me, but.... Well, he saw that he was working hard for us, so we could have the luxuries that he couldn't have." She gave a small shrug, "My family has always been wealthy. My grandfather was very lucky in the goldrush. My father inherited that wealth. But he always had one business meeting or another. Some investment that kept him away."
She gave a small smile, sympathetically, "Now I know I didn't have a mother like yours, Pup, but I understand about a father being away. And more than that I realize how scared you are of your mother. And I promise I won't let anything bad happen to you. Even if I have to hide you under the couch cushions." She gave a brighter, joking smile then.

Pup wiped at his eyes again. He was a sensitive little kid he guessed. Either that or he was just tired and this big meal was making him sleepy. He had never head such words spoken to him before, and when he looked up into Valerie's kind face, he knew he truly trusted her. At the last sentence, he grinned through his tears, his blue eyes lighting up.
"I could probably fit in your couch too! They say I'm the smallest newsie they've ever seen," Pup exclaimed, smiling up at Valerie and brushing his last tears away.

"Well, then I suppose that's settled." She smiled widely and took another drink of water, swallowing hard, her own tears unshed and the tightness in her throat diminishing. "But... you must promise to see your father."

"Well, then I suppose that's settled."
Pup nodded and grinned, taking one last sip of his milk, finishing it. He loved a glass of cold milk on an afternoon like this, and now he had chocolate cake! That was something he hadn't had in ages. He took a bite and shut his eyes, sighing contentedly at the wonderful taste.
"But... you must promise to see your father."
Pup eyed her for a moment, he just couldn't quite keep the apprehensiveness and doubt away, but knowing Valerie was an adult and knew a lot more about things than he did, he nodded and said, "I promise."

Valerie touched his shoulder, smiling gently, "Don't worry, Pup. We don't have to go today. Or even tomorrow. When you're ready. And I'll be right with you. I promise."

He grinned a wide grin and nodded, wishing he could express his thanks in words, but he couldn't. He finished up his cake quickly, using his napkin to wipe the bit of frosting off his lips and giggling. He finished and sat back, holding his stomach and letting out a contented sigh. He was sure he had never been so full in his entire life.

(New Day) Lord Byron sighed a deep sigh. What was he going to do with all this free time he had? He had just left Pallet at the pond to relax and have some time to herself and to paint. And he had dropped Shamrock off at the Bronx Lodging house to be on his own...
He didn't feel like selling any papers today. He decided that he would just relax. He found a nearby bench, sat down, took out his small journal and a pencil, and began to jot down several poems that had been running though his head lately...

Sarah was leaning on the metal railing, looking out into the distance when a young man sat on the bench next to where she stood. She watched him as he took out a journal and writing utensil and began scribbling something down. She was intrigued, as she enjoyed reading. However, she was uncertain whether he was writing a story, poetry, or personal thoughts. At any rate, she did not want to be a bother to him, so she continued looking in her initial direction.
