Jewel then hugged Lexi back with one hand, and wiped her tears away with the other hand.
"Oh I just don't know what got into me, Lexi. I feel so embarrassed, That always seems to happen to me. One minute, I will be all smiles, but then something will come back to haunt me...and I will completely lose it." She sighed heavily.
At the mention of her sister, Jewel broke the hug, and looked Lexi right in the eyes.
"Is it my sister?" She asked her. She then took a deep breath, and spoke again "Yeah, it is kind of. I just wish I could find her, and I wish I knew where to look. I also wish that I had someone to help me." She explained.
Just then Jewel inhaled and exhaled another deep breath, and placed her hand on her heart. "I've also been feeling a little lonely lately. Not 'friends' type lonely... But I mean really lonely... If you know what I mean." She said.
"Eversince that time where I had that little misunderstanding with Banshee in Brooklyn, my heart feels like it broke. I also feel as if I'm never going to find someone to help me mend my broken heart." Jewel sighed.

Lexi listened to the girl talk quietly, all the while trying to keep a sympathetic look on her face. When Jewel was done she let out a small sigh. "I'm not going to say you should get over your sisters disappearance. I know that's impossibly, but you should try to move on. It's been five years...you may just need to accept that you won't ever find out what happened."
She knew that sounded harsh, but it was the truth. If Jewel couldn't move on then it could possibly destroy her. "As for the boy situation...well I think that maybe you should just let things be for now. If you need a boy to make you feel whole then somethings wrong. You need to be able to make yourself feel whole. You'll never find someone as reliable as you."
She offered the girl a sweet smile and pulled away. She'd offered all the advice she could for the time being, it was up to Jewel to listen to it or not. If some boy had made her feel the way she did then she needed to realize that maybe now wasn't the best time for those types of relationships. She shouldn't need a boy to make her feel better, what she needed was a lot deeper then that. Lexi figured she just longed for her sister and was trying to fill that void with others, but Lexi knew from personal experience that that never worked out.

Jewel's green eyes darkened at what Lexi said "I'm sorry...but my sister is the only family I have left." she said.
" I know you have your brothers and all, and that's great. Someday, I'd like to meet at least one." she said.
Jewel shook her head quickly, feeling a slight sense of anger.
"No, Lexi. You'se misunderstood me completely. I'se not sayin' that I'se need a guy to make me feel whole or nothin'. But it would be nice ta be loved. To have something like you and Dodger have, I guess." she said, letting her Brooklyn accent slip out a little bit.
Jewel thought about something Lexi had just said, and she hung her head "My mom used to tell Lydia and I that all the time, Lexi." she said.
Jewel smiled sadly "She used to say "The only person you can rely on is yourself, Julianne. Don't ever forget that" she said, quoting her mom's exact words.
Jewel ran her hands through her long red hair "Then Lydia used to say this thing about having friends. She said that if you can count all of your friends on One hand, then you have enough. Well, I guess I can now, since I found you and Avalanche." she said.
Then Jewel looked around the room, and jumped on top of her bunk "So... Where exactly are the other girls now? Isn't it gettin' kinda late?" she sighed.

Lexi pulled herself away from Jewel and stood, she took a few deep breaths so that she wouldn't lose her temper. "I'm not saying you should forget her. I realize she's the only family you have left, but if you constantly let it consume your thoughts it will destroy you. That's why I'm saying that you may need to accept you won't find out what happened. You can't spend every waking moment trying to find her, but you can devote your free time into looking for her."
Lexi took a couple of steps away from Jewel, her eyes narrowing just a bit. "You don't know a thing about me, so please don't presume too. Just because you don't mind talking about yourself doesn't mean that everyone else feels the same way." Lexi realized that Jewel couldn't know the effect that her words were having on her but she didn't particularly care at the moment. She had offered this girl a bunk when she had felt alienated from her own roommates so Lexi felt she deserved none of this hostility.
Crossing her arms, defensively, Lexi stared at Jewel silently. "Dodger and I were friends for months before it became something more. The only thing you know about the two of us is that we are together so please don't try to say that that is what you're looking for." She hadn't even seen Dodger in weeks. Her relationship with him was strong and neither really depended on the other to be able to make it through the day. They knew where to find each other if they really needed on another, but their relationship was still relatively new. They would much rather just enjoy one anothers company then have to spend all of their energy on each other.
Lexi sighed and relaxed a bit when Jewel moved on to a neutral topic. "I'm glad we met, but you have to understand that snap judgments of people here will get you nowhere. I'm also glad that you consider me a friend because I do too."
She shrugged at Jewel's question, "They'll get here when they get here." She said with a smile. She knew she could act like a mother at times, but she didn't feel the need to keep track of all of the girls comings and goings. If she did she wouldn't have much of a life herself.

When Lexi yelled at her about hanging onto Lydia, it made her think about what she said. She then put her hand over her mouth, a guilty look crossing her face.
"Oh my god, you're absolutely right. Jesus! Why do I do this all the time? I laid my problems on people, and most of them never gave a damn. But you listened to me, and you are right about what you said. If I want to find Lydia, I have to find a way to do so." she said.
Just then Jewel's eyes grew sad as she watched Lexi back away from her, and sighed "Lexi, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to make any kind of assumptions about your life. I appreciate what you have done for me....and I shouldn't be giving you all this shit just cause I'm feeling a little lost in my life." she said.
When Jewel relaxed on her bunk, she cursed herself silently. Lexi was her friend now, who helped her out with no questions asked. But, more than that, she was her new leader, and Jewel knew from experience that it was never smart to piss off your leader.
Jewel looked down at Lexi from her bunk again "Ya know what? Let me retract my last statement about having a relationship. I just want a guy who will be nice to me, and appreciate me for who I am....Someone like...Avalanche for example. He was so nice to me earlier when I met him, and he didn't give a damn that I was just some newsie from Brooklyn. He listened to what I had to say too...and to tell you the truth, Lexi. That's ALL I want from a guy, and if a little romance were to come out of that, the that's okay too. " she said.
"Lexi, I'm really happy that you and I are friends, cause if I didn't have a friend/leader like you to tell me the things I didn't already know...I would be going crazy right now." She told Lexi with a big smile.
Jewel then heard what Lexi said about all the other girls coming in whenever they do. She shrugged, fixed her pillow on her bed into an upright position, and laid down.
"Then, I guess all we can do is...wait." She sighed.

Lexi didn't speak at first, but instead moved back to her own bunk to sit. She was disappointed in herself for letting Jewel's words get to her, but her response could've been worse. She hadn't really raised her voice, just taken a harsher tone then she normally would have. She let out a small sigh before crossing her arms. She just didn't appreciate being judged by someone she had just met, but she knew that if Jewel had said those things to her before Perry had gone missing and died she probably would've reacted differently.
Lexi nodded when she began talking about she wanted in a guy. It was what every girl would want in a man and Lexi knew she was lucky to have found Dodger, but she wasn't one to flaunt or even really talk about her relationship. She shrugged a bit and chewed on her lower lip before responding. "Alex is a wonderful man, it's only natural that you would want to meet someone like him. But you are young, don't forget that. You'll find someone who makes you happy even if it isn't right away."
Lexi gave her a small smile when Jewel said that she was happy to have met her. The feeling was mutual although she could've done without the outburst, she didn't hold it against Jewel. Covering her mouth as she yawned, she laid back on her bunk. "Go ahead and wait, I'm going to get some sleep I have a long day tomorrow." After kicking off her shoes, she pulled her blanket down so she could climb underneath. "Night, Jewel."

Jewel sighed and just relaxed on her bunk. She was so exhausted from her whole day, but she found it impossible to get any kind of sleep at all.
To be truthful, everything that her and Lexi had talked about tonight was starting to have an effect on her. Lexi was right, and sure her and Lexi couldn't have been too far apart in age, but Jewel nodded to Lexi in agreement.
"You're right, Lexi. I'm sure that one day, the right guy will just show up somewhere...somewhere unexpected. Thanks, Lexi. I really needed this talk." She said.
Jewel then listened while Lexi spoke of Alex, and how great he was. Jewel could definitely agree on what Lexi was saying.
"Well, that I could completely agree on. Alex is a great man, and obviously the kind of guy I would want. But, I will wait and see what happens. If I see Alex again, and he ends up being the guy I need...then that's okay. If it's someone else... I hope he trats me right." She explained. Then Jewel watched as Lexi laid down in her bunk, and prepared to go to sleep.
"'Night, Lexi. Sweet Dreams." Sh whispered to her.
Jewel felt a little lonely with no one else to talk to, so she turned on her stomach to look out the window. She stared at the view outside.
Her mind was on a lot of things. Lydia, Alex, Banshee, Spot...All the thoughts of the people in question rendered her unable to get any sleep that night.
Just then, she heard footsteps coming upstairs. She turned towards the door, afraid of who might be on the other side.

Zoo attempted to tiptoe up the stairs. The night arrived more quickly than she had anticipated, and she was surprised she had even managed to stay awake this long. Her bag still in hand, she quietly pushed open the door, hoping that no one was asleep.
But she had been wrong. There were two girls in the room now, one on a top bunk and the other looking as though she was already asleep. Zoo bent down and untied her shoes so she could remain as quiet as possible. She couldn't make out the figure sleeping, but the girl on the top bunk had bright red hair. Of course, that was normal in Boston. That girl had her head turned toward the door. Zoo put her hand up in a quiet wave.
She carried her shoes and bag over to a bed that had a folded blanket and looked like it hadn't been slept in for a while. Ah, temptation was strong. She slid her bag under the bed and tried to rest her mind. She knew she would be one of the oldest, if not the oldest girl in the room. She knew it would be difficult selling papers again, but she breathed in and tried to let it go.

Jewel saw the girl come in, and although she had tried to 'play dead'. She couldn't resist scaring the hell out of one of her new housemates.
"Why, good evening there. How are you today?" she asked the girl.
Jewel then poked her head down from the top bunk, her long red hair falling down into her eyes. She made an attempt to push it away, so she can see the girl below her.
Just then, she looked over at where Lexi slept, and turned back to the girl "She passed out hours ago. I haven't been able to sleep. Too much on my mind, I suppose." she told the girl
"I'm new here...just got in tonight in fact. My name is Julianne, but the newsies call me 'Jewel'. I was originally a newsie from Brooklyn." she told the girl, and held out her hand to the girl.
Jewel smiled at the girl "I was hopin' to meet one of you girls before the sun rose." she said.
"So, what's your name?" She asked.

"Why, good evening there. How are you today?"
Reflexes told Zoo to get up as quickly as possible, which was exactly what she did, but whacked her head on the top bunk in the process. Though she was fearless in head, her reflexes sometimes informed her otherwise. She and her whacked head remained sitting on the bed as the young redhead girl appeared upside-down.
Zoo didn't make much response. She was busy gritting her teeth. Pain wasn't a big deal, but some of the stupidest things just hurt the most. She nodded in response."She passed out hours ago. I haven't been able to sleep. Too much on my mind, I suppose." This was good, Zoo thought. Hopefully the bang of the bunk and the girl's not too quiet voice didn't disturb her.
I'm new here...just got in tonight in fact. My name is Julianne, but the newsies call me 'Jewel'. I was originally a newsie from Brooklyn." Zoo smiled at the fast paced girl, not being angry so much as exhausted. She took her hand and shook it.
"I was hopin' to meet one of you girls before the sun rose. So, what's your name?"
Zoo spoke in more hushed tones. "I'm Zoo. I actually just got in myself. I'm from Boston. I used to live here in New York but I had to go back for a while. But I was a Bronx newsie before, so I'm hoping I'll get back into the swing of it. What's on your mind?" She understood how troubling the mind could be.

Jewel looked horrified when Zoo banged her head on the bunk. Her green eyes went wide.
"Oh my God, are you alright? I'm awfully sorry. I didn't mean ta frighten ya." She said.
She then shook Zoo's hand back quickly "Well, it's nice to meet you, Zoo. That's an interesting nickname. So, you used to be here, but you went to Boston for a while? That's great. I've never been to Boston. Never really left New York ever in the 15 years I''ve existed." she said.
Jewel then jumped down softly onto the bottom bunk. She then sighed heavily, and put her hands in her lap. "Let's see, what's on my mind?" she asked.
She then looked up at Zoo, and sighed as she bean to speak. "Well Zoo... the long and the short of it is this... I miss my sister Lydia, she's been missing for 5 years, and I'm also a little lonely if you get my drift. It's been really confusing to me. I was in love with my last leader, and it went really bad. It's my flirtatious attitude...it rarely gets me anywhere." she explained.

"Oy shut up!" Emma sat up in bed and hurled her pillow across the room right for Jewel's head. Her eyes were blue, sleepy and she looked livid. She had been trying to ignore what was going on for the better part of an hour and she was exhausted having forced River into giving her a piggy-back ride back to the borough from Queens she really had no room at complain but it was to damn LATE for this sob story shit.
"Shut the bloody hell up some of us have to get up and go and torture the boys in the morning. So if you don't mind.. GO TO SLEEP!" She looked over at Zoo, eyes bleary.. almost asking for her pillow back with those eyes. Please? Sleep now. Sleep good.

Zoo sat quietly on her bed and listened to Jewel. She seemed quite the open book. But absorbing herself in someone else's issues was always a welcome distraction from getting absorbed in her own. Someone missing and long love affairs - what wasn't bothering a girl these days?
"...It's my flirtatious attitude...it rarely gets me anywhere." The thought of where to go from there was stifled by a pillow being thrown across the room. A blond haired, blue eyed girl shot up from a bunk across the room. Zoo hadn't even noticed the girl there. Maybe hidden was the way she wanted to be right now, from the tone of her voice...and the volume.
"So if you don't mind...GO TO SLEEP!"
She felt bad. The position of being asleep was a truly valued on in a big city. Zoo grabbed the pillow from it's current place on the floor. Something told her that Jewel might have a temper, and she wanted to avoid late night conflict.

Jewel was having a good time talking with Zoo, it made her feel wanted that someone actually wanted to listen to her 'problems'.
"See, before I left Brooklyn. I was in love with the my leader there. But this was a guy who can have any girl he wanted, and I knew that I didn't stand a chance. From there, things went bad. Especially after he saw me hitting on another one of the Brooklyn newsies that lived with me then." She explained.
Just then suddenly when she felt the pillow hit her, she turned around to see a blonde girl in the corner bunk. But before she could get the pillow to haul back at her, she saw Zoo pick it up.
Jewel ignored the cranky blonde, and turned back to Zoo.
"So what else would you like to know about me?" She asked her.

Emma gave her a look that clearly read, are you kidding me? Her eyes were hazy as she got up from the bed and yanked her pillow from Zoo, eyeing her blearily before she smacked Jewel HARD in the side of the head. "Play make a friend in the MORNING you bloody brat. And by the way? Spot Conlon ain't a womanizer stop thinkin' he is. Obviously you've never actually met him or you'd know that. Stop tellin' lies. I can't imagine any of the Brooks boys being taken in by a brat like you. It'd be completely out of character for them. They don't like girls like you-- telling stories and lies."
With a snort Emma turned her head and looked at Zoo, "Sorry, I can't TAKE her talking anymore. I don't care if she's from mars and gave birth to purple kittens. If you guys want to talk, take it downstairs it's to damn late for this now."
