*NEW DAY* Lexi finished dusting the front desk and dropped the dirty rag to the floor with a sigh before sinking into the chair behind the desk. It had been a long day and when she'd gotten done with work she'd come home and decided the place needed to be spruced up a bit. It was a far more tedious task then she'd originally anticipated, but now that it was done she had a feeling of accomplishment. Cleaning had been an easier and cheaper way to take her mind off of her problems. She'd learned to move on from Perry's death but she was still having a hard time coming to terms with it all. She'd found that it was easy to fall into her old habits that she'd quit when she'd left Jersey City. She didn't have anyone she needed to worry about hurting anymore. Reid had grown up and was able to take care of himself and he had his own life. Without Perry there was just something missing and the best way to avoid thinking about it was to begin gambling again like she used to. This time she just chose the places she went to carefully so she wouldn't end up in the same situation that had forced her to leave Jersey City.

*NEW DAY*
Fourteen-year-old Sweetheart Snow walked nervously into the 72nd Street Girl's Lodging House in Bronx. She came from St. Louis, Missouri to escape escape her abusive father and felt like a fish out of water. She didn't know how to interact with others because everyone back in St. Louis had avoided her because of her father and because she was a very shy girl.
'What if they don't like me?' was the only actual thought in her mind. She was frightened by the possibilty of the others at the Lodging House would treat her the exact same way as everyone treated her in St. Louis.
She signed herself in and paid the nickel for her stay there. She just waited for one of the other residents or one of the other Newsies around New York to come in. She felt faint and queazy and she was on the verge of a nervous breakdown.
"Oh Lord, please let someone be kind to me for once." she mumbled quietly to herself. "I want to start over, but I need help to do that."

Jewel finally arrived back at the Bronx Lodging House. She had spent way too many days in Manhattan...and as much fun as it was and all, she was glad to be back home in her own borough. She was so exhausted, having not slept in weeks. She was exhausted. She then walked to the front area.
She walked there, and spotted a girl standing there. She was a little shorter, and looked younger. *Wow, what a time I had...it's so good to be home. Looks like we got a new girl.* she thought to herself.
She then went over to the girl, and smiled at her "Heya, sweetie. Are ya okay? Are ya lost or are ya new here at the house?" She asked the girl.

Sweetheart heard the front door to the Lodging House open, but she didn't bother to find out who came in. They surely wouldn't notice her.
"Heya, sweetie. Are ya okay? Are ya lost or are ya new here at the house?" she heard a girl ask her in a kind voice.
Sweetheart looked in surprise. No one had acknowledged her in general for about ten years, let alone in a kind voice. The girl who spoke was very beautiful. She looked a year or so older than Sweetheart. she had red hair that went past her shoulders and brown eyes. She was smiling at Sweetheart in a way that was foreign to Sweetheart.
"Y-yeah, um, I-I'm n-new here." Sweetheart stammered, causing her go a bright shade of red. She didn't know what to think. A very pretty girl was talking to her and in a gentle way. Maybe Lady Luck decided to finally side with her.

Jewel smiled at the girl. She always loved when new girls came into the house, and as much as she didn't have the opportunity to meet a lot of them, she was happy to see the place so full.
The girl in front of her spoke suddenly. She was so adorable, she looked a little younger by at least a year.
"Okay, you're new here? That's great. It's always good to see so many fresh faces around here. I mean, we haven't had a new girl around here in a few weeks or so I believe. I haven't been around for a while. What's your name, honey? I'm Julianne, but you can call me 'Jewel?" she said, extending her hand to the girl.

To say that Sweetheart was shocked would be an understatement. This girl was being so kind to her, which was something Sweetheart was unfamilar with.
"Okay, you're new here? That's great. It's always good to see so many fresh faces around here. I mean, we haven't had a new girl around here in a few weeks or so I believe. I haven't been around for a while. What's your name, honey? I'm Julianne, but you can call me 'Jewel?" Jewel extended her hand towards Sweetheart.
Sweetheart hesitated for a second. She couldn't believe that this was real. Then, she realized that it would be rude to not introduce herself.
Sweetheart shook hands with Jewel, smiling nervously. "It's really nice to meet you, Jewel. I'm Brittani Snow, but please call me Sweetheart. I don't like my real name." she introduced herself. She was still nervous, but she wasn't stammering anymore, which was a good thing.

Jewel smiled at the girl. This girl had long brown hair, and eyes that shone so bright even in the dimly lit room of the house. She was just simply of a vision of cuteness. *This girl kinda reminds me of a my sister when she was younger.* she thought to herself.
"Well, I think Brittani is a pretty name...but if you don't like it...then "Sweetheart" it is. I kinda like that name better too. I think it suits you just fine, honey." she said.
Jewel shook Sweetheart's hand, and shook it "It's nice to meet ya, Sweetheart." she said in a gentle voice.

Sweetheart smiled. Jewel was a really kind and pretty girl. Sweetheart was so happy to be somewhat accepted by someone.
"You really don't mind if I stay?" Sweetheart asked, feeling excited for the first time in ten years.

Jewel giggled a bit. Sweetheart seemed so innocent and so naive, that it was just a joy in itself to talk to her.
When Sweetheart asked Jewel if she minded if she stayed at the house, Jewel cringed at the question.
"I wouldn't see a problem with it, Sweetheart. But I'm not really the one you have to talk to. The leader of this good ole group of girls is a nice sweet girl by the name of Lexi. I'm sure she's around here somewhere." She explained.
Jewel smiled at Sweetheart "So explain something to me, honey...Why are you lookin' to become a Newsie?" she asked.

Sweetheart winced. She was hoping to avoid that question.
"Well, I ran away from my home in St. Louis, Missouri and I don't have anywhere else to go. I didn't know where I was going to go, but I did know that I could start anew wherever I land at." Sweetheart explained vaguely. She wasn't sure how Jewel would take her retelling of her past.

Jewel sighed, and hung her head in sadness. She then looked back up at Sweetheart.
*Another runaway...Damn, and she's so young too...and so far away from home.* she thought to herself.
When Jewel looked up, she had tears in her eyes. She quickly hoped that Sweetheart hadn't noticed the tears in her eyes. She just felt so sad for the girl.
"Oh Sweetheart...you're so far away from home, baby. I...I know what you're going through. What about your parents? Aren't they gonna wonder where you're at?" she asked.

Sweetheart was on the verge of crying. She was remembering all the pain she had gone through ever since she was four years old. She looked up Jewel. Jewel's beautiful eyes had tears that were threatening to overflow.
"Oh Sweetheart...you're so far away from home, baby. I...I know what you're going through. What about your parents? Aren't they gonna wonder where you're at?" she asked.
Sweetheart shook her head. All of the tears that she has forced back for so long were now sliding down her face.
"No. My father has wanted me to get out of Missouri ever since..." Sweetheart choked up and couldn't finish. The tears were falling harder now, like rain during a downpour. She couldn't help getting emotional at this moment.

Jewel watched as Sweetheart began to cry heavily. It practically broke her heart to see this girl so sad. Seeing this, Jewel began to cry as well.
"Sweetheart, it's okay if you don't wanna tell me what happened. I know how it feels though. See, I'm from Brooklyn, which is a couple of miles from here. I lived with my parents and my older sister Lydia. Then when I was 10, my parents died in an accident..and my sister took off...I..I ain't seen her since...." She then trailed off, finding herself crying too much to talk.
She approached Sweetheart with a bit of caution, and hugged her gently. She was sad, and this girl needed a place to stay. "Listen, Sweetheart. I'm sure no ones gonna mind if you stay here at the house." she said.

Sweetheart was surprised to find Jewel crying along with her.
"Sweetheart, it's okay if you don't wanna tell me what happened. I know how it feels though. See, I'm from Brooklyn, which is a couple of miles from here. I lived with my parents and my older sister Lydia. Then when I was 10, my parents died in an accident..and my sister took off...I..I ain't seen her since...."
Jewel choked off too and the two girls cried together.
Then, Jewel came over to Sweetheart and gently wrapped her in a hug.
"Listen, Sweetheart. I'm sure no ones gonna mind if you stay here at the house." she said.
Sweetheart returned the hug, still crying but softly now.
"I'm sorry I had to dump all of this on to you, Jewel. I've just never had someone to talk to before, because everyone back home avoided me like I was diseased." Sweetheart hic-coughed.
