Jewel almost dropped her jaw, and breath became caught in throat What a damn coincidence.
"Curly hair, blue newsboys cap, brown eyes...Oh my god. Sweetheart, you saw Mush! The kid selling with him must be his best friend." she said.
Jewel put her hands to her chest, trying to still her beating heart. She wanted to die right where she stood.
"Oh God...Tell me he isn't the most beautiful man you ever laid eyes on.But if you think he's cute from the distance where you saw him...try sitting across from him at a booth in a diner like I was the other day." she said.

Sweetheart went scarlet red. She had seen the boy who Jewel called a charmer and boy, was he a looker!!!!!
"He is very handsome. Or as the girls back in Missouri would say, 'He's a LOOKER'!!" she joked. But her smile faded. "Truth be told, I don't know why I thought that he would ever like me. No boy ever has liked me." she murmured softly and dejectedly.

Jewel went wide eyed, and smiled at Sweetheart. She suddenly let out a laugh.
"Oh he's a looker alright. He's very handsome...and very lovely to be around. Although, the day I met him, he seemed a bit exhausted from working all day. But he was a trip ta talk to." she said.
When she saw Sweetheart begin to blush, and then say that no boy has ever liked her, Jewel nearly had a heart attack. "How can any guy not like you, girl? You're such a sweetheart...you really do live up to your nickname. As for Mush liking you...Well, that remains to be seen." she said.

Sweetheart giggled at Jewel's words.
"Well, I have to admit, walking around outside all day yelling out the headlines does seem a little tiring." Sweetheart giggled again. Then, she frowned."The reason why no boy has ever liked me was because of my shyness. It was a turn-off towards everyone back home. No boy ever likes a shy girl." Sweetheart explained.

Jewel smiled back at Sweetheart. Then she heard something from her that kinda shocked her.
"Shyness is a turn-off where you're from? What a horrible thing. A guy who doesn't like a shy girl. Wow! My boyfriend Jacob loved my shyness. When I first met him in Philadelphia...I was 12. He was the Newsies leader there. He was handsome too. He saw my shyness as a challenge. We were together for 3 years...then one day, I left Philadelphia to come here, and I ain't seen Jacob since then." she said.

Sweetheart smiled kind of sadly.
"Well, St. Louis is a very judgmental city."
Then she regained her giddiness. "Jewely, do you think that you could show me around Bronx some time soon? I just wanted to kind of get used to my new surroundings here in New York City."
Sweetheart hoped that Jewel would say yes. She already liked New York City, mostly because she now had a friend and that she was finally accepted by someone.

Jewel cringed a bit. She's never been to St. Louis, but any town screwed up enough to pick on a girl like Sweetheart, had to be bad.
When she heard Sweetheart ask her if she could show her around The Bronx, Jewel blew out a frustrated breath.
"I'll tell you what, honey. If given the oppurtunity, I will show you around The Bronx, and the rest of New York City. Hell, if you start workin' here with us. I will ask Lexi if you and I can be sellin' partners...and we could sell papes together. After all...someone has to show you the ropes." She said.
Jewel made herself comfortable on the couch in the lobby again, and fixed her hair. "So, how does all that sound to you, Sweetheart?" She asked the girl.

Sweetheart squealed happily and threw her arms around Jewel.
"That sounds fantastic!!!" Then, she released Jewel and looked down at her feet in apprehension. "That is, if Lexi will let me join you and the others." she added, sounding like she thought that Lexi wouldn't let her stay at all.

Jewel laughed when Sweetheart hugged her. She was happy to see her ecstatic about working with her.
"Don't you worry about nothin', girl. Everything is gonna be good. We're gonna have a terrific time. But this is only the beginning. You'll see that things are gonna change from now on." She said.
Jewel suddenly looked sad when Sweetheart's face fall "Don't you worry, sweetie bird. Lexi will let you stay here, and we are gonna have a good time." She told her.

Sweetheart smiled softly at Jewel. Then, Jewel called her something that made her start giggling.
"Sweetie Bird?" She asked through her giggles. "Is that a pet name for me, just like 'Jewely' is my pet name for you?"
She liked it. Sweetie Bird sounded funny, but cute.

Jewel laughed harder than she had in weeks maybe months. She then patted the free space on the couch next to her.
"Come sit by me, Sweetie Bird." She said.
Jewel then smiled wider when she heard Sweetheart giggle at the name she had given her.
"Yeah, Sweetie bird is your new pet name. I'm glad you like it. You're so damn cute. I'm just wondering.. You're how old? Fourteen or so? Why would you -want- a life like this? Sellin' papes on the street for a penny? Trying to make a living? I mean, it's a job at least. Thank God you don't have the same attitude about female newsies as my older sister did." She sighed.

Sweetheart sat down next to Jewel.
"I just turned fourteen the night I ran away from home." Then, she thought about how to answer Jewel's other question. "Well, being Newsie sounds like a much better life than my old life back in Missouri. Besides, earning less than a dollar a day is so much better. Now, I can somewhat feed myself better. My father usually gave me a small meal every three days, every two days if I was lucky. Haven't you noticed how skinny I am? That's my father's handiwork." She explained.

Jewel became angry by the way Sweetheart's father was treating her before she ran off. It was completely uncalled for to do that to someone so young..and your own pride and joy nonetheless.
"Good god, yes! Wow, your father must've been the cruelest man ever...only feeding you every three days. If my parents had treated me like that...I probably would be dead by now. But thankfully, I was from a family that was pretty rich, so I didn't have that problem till I ended up on the street. But I think your father treated you horribly." She told her.
Jewel then sighed, and put her arm around Sweetheart "Ya know what, sweetie bird. I think you needed to start over...and just to change my previous statement...I think this is gonna be just the place you need." She said, ruffling Sweetheart's hair.

Sweetheart hugged Jewel in a sisterly way.
"Thank you so much, Jewely."
Then, Sweetheart thought of something that might be important if she did stay.
"Hey Jewely? Who else stays in this Lodging House? Is it just girls or do the males Newsies stay here too?" Sweetheart asked.

Jewel hugged Sweetheart back.
"Oh, you're welcome, sweetie bird." She sighed.
Jewel then thought hard about how to answer Sweetheart's question about who lives here at the Lodging House.
"Well... At this house, there is mostly girls here. I've only ever met 3 girls from here so far. There are males around, but they don't live in this house. The boys have their own lodging house down the block." She said.
Jewel then fished a barrett out of the pocket of her skirt, and sighed as she made a move to fix her hair. She then smiled and looked over at Sweetheart.
"Ya know, when things start picking up for everyone, including you. I'm gonna help you out a lot, girl. Show you the ropes, have you meet the other girls, and who knows...maybe we'll even find you a guy." She said with a sneaky little smirk.
